Rhodesgrass Plant
Photograph of a Rhodesgrass plant. The back of the photograph proclaims, “Rhodesgrass – (Chloris gayana) is a perennial grass native to South Africa and was first introduced and very leafy and grows approximately 3 feet high. The spreading, clustered spikes of the flowering head number from 10 to 15, and seed is produced in abundance. The plant also spreads by running branches, or stolons, that are 2 to 6 feet long and root and produce a plant at every node. It is not winter-hardy and rarely withstands temperatures below 15 to 18 degrees Fahrenheit. It does best on fairly moist soil, although it will make growth during several months of drought. It can be sewn any time during warm weather, but early spring usually is preferred. It was first fultivated [sic] for pasture, withstands trampling, recovers quickly, and is relished by livestock. Rotational grazing in the best method of management.“

On October 14, 1956, and 1.65 inch rain fell on this area in two hour period. The moisture penetrated 30 inches where ground was covered with dense stand of Sand bluestem in Excellent Condition. Only 10 inches insoak on Fair Condition and 3 inches insoak on poor condition."

Sweet Clover as Green Manure
Photograph of Armin Groeneman, district cooperator, and neighbor, plowing under a green manure crop of 4 to 6 ton per acre of sweet clover. Land was limed 6 or 7 years ago of 2.5 tons per acre and 500 lbs. of Raw Rock Phosphate per acre. Sweet clover in crop rotation is a common practice on the Groeneman farm. He says it opens the soil and allows better moisture penetration and improves crop yields.

Live Bees
Photograph of Claude Webb proudly displaying a few of the live bees from the 70 bee hives on his farm. Bees are the most important factor in the pollination of soil conservation legumes. This is a very economical way, K.C. Bennett, SCS technician, says to ge more and better returns from legumes in a planted soil and moisture program. Bees feed on vetch, sweet clover, peach and other blossoms on the Webb farm. Webb sold $500.00 worth of honey last year.
