Oral History Interview with Joe Langdell, December 16, 2000

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Joe Langdell. Langdell joined the Navy in late 1940. He completed Midshipman School. He served aboard USS Arizona (BB-39). They were moored along Ford Island when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. He participated in recovery and clean up after the attack. In early 1942, Langdell was reassigned to the USS Frazier (DD-607). They guarded transports during the Guadalcanal Campaign and Aleutian Islands Campaign. After an operation in early 1944, he remained in the US, was promoted to lieutenant commander, and provided administrative assistance to an admiral.

Oral History Interview with William Schell, December 16, 2010

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with William Schell. Schell joined the Navy in March 1944. He was trained as an aviation ordinance man and was assigned to VC-84 as a gunner on a TBM-3. His squadron was assigned to the USS Makin Island (CVE-93) and participated in the battles of Leyte Gulf, Lingayen Bay, and Iwo Jima. Schell talks about how they bombed Iwo Jima for thirty-two days with little effect. He was discharged in February 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with David Glenn Cooke, Jr. Cooke joined the Marine Corps in 1943. He completed boot camp in San Diego, then was assigned to the Naval Air Station in Norman, Oklahoma, where he trained as an ordnance ground crewman. Additionally, he serviced F-4F and F-6F airplanes at Pendleton. He provides details of his training, serving as Corporal of the Guard (COG) and completing all three of his service years stateside. He was discharged in July of 1946.

Oral History Interview with Thomas C. Ketcham, December 16, 2009

Transcript of an oral interview with Thomas C. Ketcham. Born in 1923, he was a member of the Enlisted Reserves Corps (ERC) while attending Purdue University. He was called to active duty in May 1943, assigned to field artillery, and trained in surveying methods. He describes the process of surveying for artillery purposes with a transit, a stadia rod and logarithm books. He was sent to Europe with the 85th Infantry Division, 403rd Field Artillery Battalion, Headquarters Battery. He describes the trip from Fort Dix, New Jersey to Naples, Italy. He shares the story of an air raid and the eruption of Mount Vesuvius when they arrived. He describes the 155 mm Howitzer and in his role in determining the firing direction. He discusses advancing north through Minturno and Tremensuoli to Rome. He talks about being shelled by the Germans while waiting to cross the Po River. He shares an anecdotes about an observation post in a church steeple in Minturno; doing survey calculations in a farmhouse that contained hidden German soldiers; building a make-shift stove; reconnoitering north of Rome; encountering Nebelwerfer (nicknamed "Screaming Mimi"); and being ordered to stop a tank with a machine gun. Oral History Interview with Blaise LePre, December 16, 2004

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Blaise LePre. LePre dropped out of high school and then joined the Navy in 1943. After basic training in New York and an engineering course in Minnesota, LePre headed west to Washington and was assigned to the USS West Virginia (BB-48). He was aboard the ship during the Battle of Surigao Strait. His duty station was in the boiler rooms. After some repairs at a floating drydock, the West Virginia headed for Iwo Jima to bombard. LePre was also present for the bombardments of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. LePre was aboard when a kamikaze struck the West Virginia. He was discharged in May 1946.
