The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Wayne Cripe. Cripe was born in Camden, Indiana 22 March 1926. Drafted into the US Marine Corps in June 1944 he went to boot camp at Parris Island. After twelve weeks he was sent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. He describes the training he underwent. During November 1944 he was sent to Camp Banyan, Hilo, Hawaii where he was assigned to the 5th Marine Division, 32nd Replacement Battalion. He tells of landing on Iwo Jima and seeing the American flag flying over Mount Suribachi as he was unloading supplies on the beach. He was on Iwo Jima seventeen days before he was severely wounded by fragments from a Japanese grenade. After being tended by a hospital corpsman he was evacuated to the US Samaritan (AH-10) and taken to Aiea Naval Hospital at Pearl Harbor. After spending six months at the hospital he was sent to San Diego where he received a physical evaluation and was discharged 5 May 1946.

In early 1944 he served aboard the USS Tabberer (DE-418) as a signalman, using flashing lights, semaphore flags, and Morse Code. In September of 1944 they traveled to Pearl Harbor to practice shooting and work with sonar. They left Pearl Harbor and joined Admiral Halsey’s Third Fleet in October of 1944, conducting anti-submarine sweeps of the Philippine Sea. He describes his experience through a typhoon in December of 1944. They later traveled to Iwo Jima, shooting down enemy aircraft during the bombing of Iwo. From there they traveled around Okinawa and Japan, doing submarine patrols. After August 1945 they were assigned to escort big supply ships into the Korea Bay in the Yellow Sea. He was discharged in January of 1946.

He served with the 369th Infantry Division, also known as the Harlem Hellfighters, consisting mainly of African Americans. He served in the motor pool, during the European and Pacific Theaters. In May of 1942, Morris and his united worked in labor and security operations in the Southwest Pacific Area. He returned to the U.S. and was discharged in 1945.

In early 1942 Zartman was sent to an air base on Canton Island for nine months, where he worked as a stevedore. He then served on Makin Island, and joined the 6th Ranger Battalion. He participated in the Marianas Islands Campaign and the Battle of Saipan in 1944. Zartman was discharged in June of 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Forrest Biard. Biard graduated from the Naval Academy in 1934. From 1939 through September 1941, he completed full immersion in Japanese language and culture training in Tokyo. Biard was a cryptologic linguist, serving in all three Navy codebreaking units during World War II. In September, Biard was stationed at Pearl Harbor as a senior linguist for Station HYPO, the codebreaking unit at Pearl Harbor where he served as a language officer until August 1943. From February to May 1942, he was assigned to USS Yorktown (CV-5) as the radio intelligence officer under Admiral Frank Jack Fletcher. Biard’s translation and decryption work on JN-25 contributed to Allied efforts in the battles of the Coral Sea and Midway. From August to October 1943, he was sent to the codebreaking unit OP-20-G in Washington, also known as Station Negat. From November 1943 to April 1945, he was sent to the Station Cast codebreaking unit at Melbourne, Australia. While in Melbourne he deployed on several ships operating in the South Pacific.
