Chlorotriammineplatinum(II) Ion : Acid Hydrolysis and Isotopic Exchange of Chloride Ligand (open access)

Chlorotriammineplatinum(II) Ion : Acid Hydrolysis and Isotopic Exchange of Chloride Ligand

Abstract: The acid hydrolysis of [Pt(NH3)3Cl] has been shown to occur to a measurable extent. for this reaction: [APt(NH3)cCl]+ + H2O [chemical equilibrium symbol with rate constant k-1 above and k1 below] [Pt(NH3)c(H2O)]++ + Cl-, the equilibrium quotient was measured at 25 degree C and 35 degree C. At 25 degree C this quotient was 8.4 x 10-5 at [Mu] (ionic strength) = 0 and 25 x 10-5 at [mu] = .318 M. This variation is consistent with the expected changes in activity coefficients. [Delta]H for the reaction was found to be approximately 0. The rate constant, k1 was 2.3 x 10-5 sec.-1 at 25 degree C and it was nearly independent of ionic strength. The acid hydrolysis provides a mechanism for the exchange of the chloride ligand and Cl-. Exchange experiments with Cl36 showed that in addition to the acid hydrolysis, a process, first order in both, [Pt(NH3)3Cl] and Cl- with a rate constant of 6. 10-5 sec.-1M.-1 contributes to the exchange. The behavior of the entire series of chloro-ammines of platinum(II) toward acid hydrolysis and chloride exchange has been summarized, and a likely mechanism for the process has been discussed.

Collected Methods for Analysis of Sodium Metal

Methods for analyzing chemical impurities in sodium metal samples are presented. Chemical analysis was used to determine the following impurities: Calcium, Carbon, Chromium, Iron, Lithium, Nickel, Oxygen, Potassium, and Zirconium. Spectrographic analysis was used to determine many other impurities. Sodium samples obtained from experimental apparatus operated as part of the work being conducted for Atomics International were analyzed by these methods.

Combustion-efficiency investigation of special fuels in single tubular-type combustor at simulated altitude conditions

Report presenting a combustion-efficiency investigation of 10 special straight-run distillate fuels in an individual tubular-type combustor unit of a 14-unit assembly at two simulated engine operating conditions. These distillates were obtained from various crude oils and consisted of hydrocarbon mixtures with distillations temperature varying from 93 to 690 degrees Fahrenheit. Comparison of temperature measurements obtained from two locations in the exhaust duct showed that under certain operating conditions the flame extended beyond the turbine position.

Comments on Engineering Review of PRTR by Atomic Power Equipment Department

On a project of the magnitude and complexity of the Plutonium Recycle Test Reactor is was considered prudent engineering practice to obtain an independant design review by a competent off-site group that had not participated in any way in the development of the design. Accordingly, the Atomic Power Equipment Department of the General Electric Company was requested to make such an engineering review, and an Assistance to Hanford contract authorizing this work was approved by the Atomic Energy Commission in November, 1958.

A comparison of two submerged inlets at subsonic and transonic speeds (open access)

A comparison of two submerged inlets at subsonic and transonic speeds

Report presenting an investigation of the operation of two submerged-type inlets in a wind tunnel at subsonic and transonic speeds. The pressure recovery was relatively constant throughout the lower subsonic speed range. The ability of the divergent-walled inlet to operate with satisfactory pressure recovery at higher free-stream Mach numbers than was possible with the parallel-walled inlet is attributed to the difference in the boundary-layer characteristics of the two types of inlets.

Computer description APPR-1 simulator (open access)

Computer description APPR-1 simulator

The APPR-1 is a pressurized water reactor having a low specific heat fuel and a water primary coolant. The primary coolant loop delivers heat from the reactor to the steam generator. The secondary water in the steam generator is converted to steam and then taken to the turbine to drive an electrical generator. The simulation of this system is broken down into three primary areas: the neutron kinetics in the reactor which are necessary to generate the primary power function, the heat transfer in the reactor, and the heat transfer in the steam generator.
