Investigation of an NACA Submerged Inlet at Mach Numbers from 1.17 to 1.99

Memorandum presenting an investigation conducted with an NACA submerged inlet at Mach numbers from 1.17 to 1.99. Total-pressure ratio, mass-flow ratio, and static pressure distribution along the ramp and main body were obtained at angles of attack of 0 and 6 degrees for a side inlet location. The results showed that the maximum total-pressure ratio attainable with the submerged inlet decreased from 0.83 at a Mach number of 1.17 to 0.52 at a Mach number of 1.99.

Flow Separation From Rods Ahead of Blunt Noses at Mach Number 2.72 (open access)

Flow Separation From Rods Ahead of Blunt Noses at Mach Number 2.72

"An experimental investigation in the Langley Gas Dynamics Laboratory has been made of the flow separation from slender rods mounted to extend forward along the axes of symmetry of blunt-nosed bodies. The mechanism of the separation and its governing criteria are discussed. Drag data at a Mach number of 2.72 for various rod lengths and nose radii at an angle of attack of zero degrees are presented. It was found that the drag coefficients of blunt noses could be appreciably reduced by the use of protruding rods. Criteria for rod length which gives lowest drag are given" (p. 1).

From Summary: "A 1/4-scale dynamically similar model of the XFV-1 airplane has been flown in the Ames 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel, using the trailing flight-cable technique. This investigation was devoted to establishing the flight characteristics of the model in forward flight from hovering to wing stall, and in yawed flight (wing span alined with the relative wind) from hovering to the maximum speed at which controlled flight could be maintained. Landings, take-offs, and hovering characteristics in flights close to the ground were also investigated."

Investigation of Drag and Pressure Recovery of a Scoop Inlet in the Transonic Speed Range

"The drag and pressure recovery of a scoop-inlet model have been investigated at transonic speeds by the free-fall testing technique over a Mach number range from about 0.8 to 1.12. Tests were conducted at zero angle of attack, using both rounded and sharp lips at mass-flow ratios from about 0.6 to 0.9. The results indicate that the Mach number of drag divergence of the scoop-inlet model was about the same as that of the basic model without inlets which was tested previously" (p. 1).

Hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon derivatives of cyclopropane (open access)

Hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon derivatives of cyclopropane

The methods used to prepare and purify 19 hydrocarbon derivatives of cyclopropane are discussed. Of these hydrocarbons, 13 were synthesized for the first time. In addition to the hydrocarbons, six cyclopropylcarbinols, five alkyl cyclopropyl ketones, three cyclopropyl chlorides, and one cyclopropanedicarboxylate were prepared as synthesis intermediates. The melting points, boiling points, refractive indices, densities, and, in some instances, heats of combustion of both the hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon derivatives of cyclopropane were determined. These data and the infrared spectrum of each of the 34 cyclopropane compounds are presented in this report. The infrared absorption bands characteristic of the cyclopropyl ring are discussed, and some observations are made on the contribution of the cyclopropyl ring to the molecular refractions of cyclopropane compounds.
