Solar production of industrial process steam for the Lone Star Brewery. 80% review report (open access)

Solar production of industrial process steam for the Lone Star Brewery. 80% review report

The solar steam system for the Lone Star Brewery is described in detail. It consists of a roof-mounted parabolic trough collector field heating Monsanto's Therminol T-55 heat transfer fluid, a solar-fired boiler, a heat transfer fluid circulation pump, and all the associated piping. The comparison of various collectors and heat transfer fluids surveyed is reviewed. Also included are discussions of the system performance analysis, economic analysis, safety analysis, data collection, and environmental impact assessment. Numerous drawings illustrate the system, particularly the parallel trough collectors. (LEW)

Large scale copper vapor laser computer control system (open access)

Large scale copper vapor laser computer control system

High power pulse copper vapor laser systems consist of a master oscillator and numerous power amplifiers. Large systems used in laser isotope separation experiments require several automatic control systems. The rapid development of compact mini computers over the past several years has enabled the implementation of sophisticated computer controlled copper vapor laser systems. Present systems provide automatic time synchronization and input power stabilization. Future systems will incorporate semi-automatic start-up capabilities.

Effects of brine migration on waste storage systems. Final report. [Thermomechanical effects] (open access)

Effects of brine migration on waste storage systems. Final report. [Thermomechanical effects]

Processes which can lead to mobilization of brine adjacent to spent fuel or nuclear waste canisters and some of the thermomechanical consequences have been investigated. Velocities as high as 4 x 10/sup -7/ m s/sup -1/ (13 m y/sup -1/) are calculated at the salt/canister boundary. As much as 40 liters of pure NaCl brine could accumulate around each canister during a 10-year storage period. Accumulations of bittern brines would probably be less, in the range of 2 to 5 liters. With 0.5% water, NaCl brine accumulation over a 10-year storage cycle around a spent fuel canister producing 0.6 kW of heat is expected to be less than 1 liter for centimeter-size inclusions and less than 0.5 liter for millimeter-size inclusions. For bittern brines, about 25 years would be required to accumulate 0.4 liter. The most serious mechanical consequence of brine migration would be the increased mobility of the waste canister due to pressure solution. In pressure solution enhanced deformation, the existence of a thin film of fluid either between grains or between media (such as between a canister and the salt) provides a pathway by which the salt can be redistributed leading to a marked increase in strain rates …

Using silk screened evaporated and sputtered Al as the metal source, the formation of Al back surface fields (BSF) was studied. The most satisfactory results were those obtained with the sputtered Al and in which open circuit voltages (V/sub oc/) of 0.585v (12 ..cap omega.. cm FZ silicon) have been achieved. The ultrasonic interconnect process is being verified. The process is generally satisfactory, but increased pull-strength may be obtained if some form of sintering is carried out on the metallized contacts. Plasma etching has been shown to be feasible as a replacement for wet chemical cleaning prior to diffusion. An IPEG calculation shows its cost to be $0.005/watt peak (1975$). Initial results on cells prepared by using electroless Pd/Ni plus either electroplated Ag or Cu have shown slightly poor performance than cells with the baseline evaporated Ti/Pd/Ag system. This is being further studied. A new mask has been designed for the 1.6 x 7.0 cm and 2.0 x 7.0 cm cells. This mask has a lower coverage and total lower resistive loss than the previous mask design. It is also shown that the cell width should not exceed 2.0 to 3.0 cm for optimum efficiency.

Implementation study for the NRC Application and Development Facility (open access)

Implementation study for the NRC Application and Development Facility

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has expressed the desire to establish an Application and Development Facility (ADF) for NRC Headquarters. The ADF is a computer system which will provide safeguards analysts access to safeguards analysis computer software. This report analyzes the issues, requirements and options available in the establishment of an ADF. The purpose and goals of the ADF are presented, along with some general issues to be considered in the implementation of such a system. A phased approach for ADF implementation, which will allow for the earliest possible access to existing codes and also allow for future expansion, is outlined. Several options for central computers are discussed, along with the characteristics and approximate costs for each. The report concludes with recommended actions proposed to start the development of the ADF.

Evaluation of wash bottles for flammable solvent use (open access)

Evaluation of wash bottles for flammable solvent use

Polyethylene wash bottles for flammable solvents were recently approved by the Department of Energy (DOE) for use at the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant with the restriction that pressure relief must be provided. A laboratory study was made of vent holes of various diameters located in the caps and dispensing tube of wash bottles containing a wide variety of flammable and nonflammable solvents. Wash bottles vented with a 0.63-mm hole in the dispensing tube were found to be optimum for the needed pressure relief.

Towards unified performance measures for evaluating nuclear safeguard systems: mathematical foundations and formal comparison of existing models (open access)

Towards unified performance measures for evaluating nuclear safeguard systems: mathematical foundations and formal comparison of existing models

An important step in the analysis of large-scale systems is the development of economical and meaningful measures of system performance. In the literature on analysis of nuclear safeguard systems, many performance measures have been advanced, but their interrelationships and their relevance to overall system objectives have not received attention commensurate with the effort spent in developing detailed safeguard models. The work reported here is an attempt to improve the development and evaluation of performance measures for nuclear safeguard systems. This work falls into three main areas. First, we develop a new framework which provides an initial basis for defining and structuring performance measures. To demonstrate that this framework allows a clear understanding of the purposes of nuclear safeguard systems, we employ it to state various safeguard questions clearly and concisely. The framework reflects the rough subsystem structure of safeguard systems - the detection and response subsystems - and formally accommodates various safeguard models. We especially emphasize two of these models which are under development at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, the structured assessment approach (SAA) and the systems vulnerability assessment method (SVAM). Second, we examine some performance measures presently used in the nuclear safeguards area and in reliability theory in general. Some …

Plutonium in the north equatorial Pacific (open access)

Plutonium in the north equatorial Pacific

The concentrations of plutonium in samples collected from the north equatorial region of the Pacific Ocean are presented. The results discussed in this abstract are preliminary, and some of the conclusions and descriptions of results may be revised after results from similar tests made by Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute are critically compared. An early exchange of these data is warranted because the results are directly related to the objectives of the workshop--to assess the processes, behavior, and fate of radionuclides in oceanic environments.
