ARTI/MCRL Project Report products of motor burnout (Second quarter report) (open access)

ARTI/MCRL Project Report products of motor burnout (Second quarter report)

The OSP (Operating Safety Procedure) required for performance of electrical arc testing of CFC replacement fluids was renewed. Electrical breakdown tests at one (1) atmosphere pressure have been performed for R-22, R-134a, and R-125/R-143a (50:50 blend; AZ-50), and breakdown products identified. No differences in HCFC breakdown products are seen in the presence or absence of lubricant oils. The design of the high pressure-high temperature test stand has been finalized, and construction initiated during this quarter. Three motor stators and rotors were received from Tecumseh Products Company for use in motor burnout tests. A test plan for the motor breakdown tests is in preparation.

Bioconversion of coal-derived synthesis gas to liquid fuels. Final report, September 29, 1992--December 27, 1994 (open access)

Bioconversion of coal-derived synthesis gas to liquid fuels. Final report, September 29, 1992--December 27, 1994

The proposed research project consists of an integrated, two-stage fermentation and a highly energy-efficient product separation scheme. In the first fermentation, Butyribacterium methylotrophicum converts carbon monoxide (CO) into butyric acid and acetic acids which are then converted into butanol, ethanol, and a small amount of acetone in the second stage fermentation by Clostridium acetobutylicum. An advanced separation system process, based on pervaporation, removes the alcohols from the fermentation broth as they are formed, along with some of the hydrogen sulfide (H{sub 2}S), to minimize possible inhibition of the fermentations. This bioconversion process offers a critical advantage over conventional, catalytic processes for synthesis gas conversion: the microorganisms are several orders of magnitude more sulfur tolerant than metallic catalysts. The catalysts require sulfur removal to the parts per million level, while the microorganisms are unaffected by H{sub 2}S and carbonyl sulfide (COS) at one part per hundred--roughly the composition of sulfur in raw synthesis gas. During the two-year course of this project, the following major objectives have been accomplished: demonstrated long-term cell recycle of continuous fermentation of synthesis gas; demonstrated cell immobilization of Butyribacterium methylotrophicum; identified trickle-bed reactor as a viable alternative fermentation method; modulated metabolic pathways to increase C4 formation during …

The determination of the constitutive parameters of a medium with application to a reinforced concrete pad (open access)

The determination of the constitutive parameters of a medium with application to a reinforced concrete pad

This report describes the experimental and analytical program performed to determine the constitutive parameters of the reinforced concrete pad in the test facility used during the Low Power On-the-Ground portion of the NASA Boeing 757 HIRF Tests. These tests were conducted during the period September 20 to October 21, 1994 in the LESLI facility at the Phillips Laboratory, Kirtland AFB, NM. The on-the-ground tests were designed to meet several objectives including support of a flight test series and the generation of data for the validation of codes and models that could be used to predict the electromagnetic environment in transport aircraft. To satisfy these objectives, tests were to be executed in a known environment and the data compared to modeling results. A critical feature of this testing was the ``known environment`` which implies knowledge of the parameters which are critical to an effective modeling activity and which could include, among many other things, definitions of the airplane and its physical and electrical configuration, the ground upon which it sits when stationary, the fields impinging on the aircraft, and the radiating or bounding structure in the simulator. The authors would want to specify the electromagnetic characteristics of the entire space that …

High-level waste tank farm set point document (open access)

High-level waste tank farm set point document

Setpoints for nuclear safety-related instrumentation are required for actions determined by the design authorization basis. Minimum requirements need to be established for assuring that setpoints are established and held within specified limits. This document establishes the controlling methodology for changing setpoints of all classifications. The instrumentation under consideration involve the transfer, storage, and volume reduction of radioactive liquid waste in the F- and H-Area High-Level Radioactive Waste Tank Farms. The setpoint document will encompass the PROCESS AREA listed in the Safety Analysis Report (SAR) (DPSTSA-200-10 Sup 18) which includes the diversion box HDB-8 facility. In addition to the PROCESS AREAS listed in the SAR, Building 299-H and the Effluent Transfer Facility (ETF) are also included in the scope.
