Measurements of an Iron and Borated Water Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 10 (open access)

Measurements of an Iron and Borated Water Shield in the Lid Tank : Experiment 10

The following report measures a shield mockup in three regions: the first made almost entire of iron; the second, transition, region is made of various thicknesses of B4C; and the third region was borated water. The iron samples used in the experiments were made in the form of rectangular plates and place in the lid tank; however, the plates were not completely flat and created a water gap that was measured in this report.

Core Analysis for the Development and Constraint of Physical Models of Geothermal Reservoirs (open access)

Core Analysis for the Development and Constraint of Physical Models of Geothermal Reservoirs

Effective reservoir exploration, characterization, and engineering require a fundamental understanding of the geophysical properties of reservoir rocks and fracture systems. Even in the best of circumstances, spatial variability in porosity, fracture density, salinity, saturation, tectonic stress, fluid pressures, and lithology can all potentially produce and/or contribute to geophysical anomalies. As a result, serious uniqueness problems frequently occur when interpreting assumptions based on a knowledge base founded in validated rock physics models of reservoir material.

Technical review of entrained design report (open access)

Technical review of entrained design report

Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) is planning to expand its in-house coal gasification R&D capabilities by installing a research facility that can address a number of concepts including entrained, fluid bed, and catalytic gasification and flash pyrolysis. This Advanced Gasification Concepts (AGC) facility design, as it currently stands, includes piping and instrumentation diagrams, vessel drawings and specifications, instrumentation lists and specifications, and equipment layout and isometric drawings. Before the design is finalized, a critique is needed to ensure that the intended flexibility and objectives can be met. The design approach was evaluated to determine whether the present design will meet the research objectives, including the need for flexibility. Heat and material balances, critical velocity requirements, vessel arrangements, potential operational problems, and instrumentation were reviewed. The mechanical design review included a critique of the drawings and specifications, adherence to standards and codes, materials of construction, vessels, piping, valves, heaters, and fittings. In addition, utilities requirements, heat transfer and particulate removal calculations, and pumping and heat exchanger requirements were checked. An evaluation of the equipment cost includes a critique of the reliability of the equipment cost breakdown, the areas of cost uncertainty, and the areas for potential cost savings. A safety analysis …

Enzymatic desulfurization of coal. Sixth quarterly report, September 16--December 15, 1989

Our experimental approach focuses on the use of enzymes which catalyze the addition of oxygen to organic compounds., In tailoring the application of these enzymes to coal processing, we are particularly interested in ensuring that oxidation occurs at sulfur and not at carbon-carbon bonds. Previous studies with DBT have shown that the reaction most frequently observed in microbial oxidative pathways is one in which DBT is oxidized at ring carbons. These reactions, as we have said, are accompanied by a considerable decrease in the energy content of the compound. In addition, microbial pathways have been identified in which the sulfur atom is sequentially oxidized to sulfoxide, to sulfone, to sulfonate, and finally to sulfuric acid. In this case, the fuel value of the desulfurized compounds is largely retained. We are evaluating the potential of commercially available enzymes to perform this function.

Alpha Particle Physics Experiments in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (open access)

Alpha Particle Physics Experiments in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor

Alpha particle physics experiments were done on the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) during its deuterium-tritium (DT) run from 1993-1997. These experiments utilized several new alpha particle diagnostics and hundreds of DT discharges to characterize the alpha particle confinement and wave-particle interactions. In general, the results from the alpha particle diagnostics agreed with the classical single-particle confinement model in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) quiescent discharges. Also, the observed alpha particle interactions with sawteeth, toroidal Alfvén eigenmodes (TAE), and ion cyclotron resonant frequency (ICRF) waves were roughly consistent with theoretical modeling. This paper reviews what was learned and identifies what remains to be understood.

Magnetic Recorder for Nuclear Pulse Application : Covering the Period from October 6, 1959 to December 5, 1959

"Abstract: Data on analog magnetic tape characteristics are presented along with results from conventional and modulator playback system operational tests. Theoretical considerations imply that the modulator head should be loss sensitive to short term variations in record and playback tape speed. It is also pointed out that although a tape recorder operating at 7.5 in./sec has only 12 kcs bandwidth for sinusoidal wave forms. the record and play-back amplifiers for pulse recording can operate with other bandwidths. These amplifiers must be capable of passing a square wave with a frequency of 1.5 kcs. A square wave of such frequency represents the condition of 350 microsecond pulses with a 700 microsecond period. (J.R.D)."

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis IV. The Identity and Sequencefo the Intermediates in Sucrose Synthesis

The synthesis of sucrose from C{sup 14}0{sub 22} by green algae has been investigated and the intermediates separated by the method of paper chromatography. It is shown that sucrose is the first free sugar appearing during photosynthesis. It is apparently formed by condensation of the glucose-I-phosphate and a fructose phosphate. A series of radioautographs of paper chromatograms of extracts from plants which have photosynthesized for different periods of time has been prepared. The results indicate that 2-phosphoglyceric acid is the first product synthesized from C0{sub 2} during photosynthesis.

(Studies of nuclear reaction at very low energies): Technical progress report

We summarize the accomplishments of the first full year's operation of the Colorado School of Mines low energy nuclear physics project utilizing the General Ionex Model 1545 low energy, high current particle accelerator. The projects which we have completed which were explicity included in the original contract proposal include the measurement of the gamma ray branching ratios of the p + /sup 6/Li, p + /sup 7/Li, and p + /sup 11/B reactions as well as the absolute yield of the reaction /sup 9/Be(p,..gamma..)/sup 10/B between proton laboratory energies of about 40 to 180 keV. in the course of these measurements we have demonstrated the associated gamma ray technique for Germanium detector efficiency calibration at gamma ray energies up to 12 MeV using very low energy proton beams. We have, in addition, pursued a fairly comprehensive investigation of an extremely interesting and totally surprising phenomenon in which we see a yield of the d-d fusion reaction during bombardment of deuterated polyethylene by light to medium ion and molecular beams which is greatly enhanced over the yield expected from a straight-forward secondary ion reaction calculation. This enhanced yield is seen to correlate with the beam line pressure, suggesting target heating effects …

ARM/GCSS Single Column Model (SCM) Intercomparison Procedures for Case 3: Summer 1997 SCM IOP (open access)

ARM/GCSS Single Column Model (SCM) Intercomparison Procedures for Case 3: Summer 1997 SCM IOP

The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program is a multi-laboratory, interagency program that was created in 1989 with funding from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The ARM Program is part of DOE's effort to resolve scientific uncertainties about global climate change with a specific focus on improving the performance of general circulation models (GCMs) used for climate research and prediction. These improved models will help scientists better understand the influences of human activities on the earth's climate. The objectives of the ARM Program are: (1) to relate observed atmospheric radiation to the temperature and composition of the atmosphere, especially water vapor and clouds, across a wide range of climatologically relevant possibilities, and (2) to develop and test improved parameterizations of radiation and radiative interactions with water vapor, aerosols, and clouds, for use in GCMs.

Lightweight Aluminum/Nano composites for Automotive Drive Train Applications (open access)

Lightweight Aluminum/Nano composites for Automotive Drive Train Applications

During Phase I, we successfully processed air atomized aluminum powders via Dynamic Magnetic Compaction (DMC) pressing and subsequent sintering to produce parts with properties similar to wrought aluminum. We have also showed for the first time that aluminum powders can be processed without lubes via press and sintering to 100 % density. This will preclude a delube cycle in sintering and promote environmentally friendly P/M processing. Processing aluminum powders via press and sintering with minimum shrinkage will enable net shape fabrication. Aluminum powders processed via a conventional powder metallurgy process produce too large a shrinkage. Because of this, sinter parts have to be machined into specific net shape. This results in increased scrap and cost. Fully sintered aluminum alloy under this Phase I project has shown good particle-to-particle bonding and mechanical properties. We have also shown the feasibility of preparing nano composite powders and processing via pressing and sintering. This was accomplished by dispersing nano silicon carbide (SiC) powders into aluminum matrix comprising micron-sized powders (<100 microns) using a proprietary process. These composite powders of Al with nano SiC were processed using DMC press and sinter process to sinter density of 85-90%. The process optimization along with sintering needs to …

Computation of Detection Efficiencies for NMIS Fast Plastic Scintillators Using a Thick Detector Model (open access)

Computation of Detection Efficiencies for NMIS Fast Plastic Scintillators Using a Thick Detector Model

This report describes and compares the computation of the detection efficiencies for fast plastic scintillating detectors from their Time-of-Flight (TOF) spectrums using two different detector models. In the first method which assumes a thin detector model, a one-to-one correspondence between the energy of the neutron and the time bin in which it appears in the TOF spectrum is used in computing the detector efficiencies. In the second method which is based upon a thick detector model, the macroscopic cross sections of the detector materials are used to determine the path length of a neutron in the detector and hence its time of detection. With this model, neutrons of a given energy E{sub n}, are distributed across several time bins in the TOF spectrum.
