Oral History Interview with Bailey Salmon, July 14, 2018

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Bailey Salmon. Salmon joined the Marine Corps in March of 1943. He completed advanced training with landing craft vehicles, and was placed in the V-12 Navy College Training Program. He traveled to a transit center in Hawaii, and practiced for the invasion of Japan. He was transferred to Guam, and joined the 3rd Marine Division. Shortly thereafter, the bombs were dropped and the war ended. He was ranked as Acting 1st Sergeant and worked on patrol missions. His discharge date is not noted, though likely around late 1945.

Oral History Interview with Thomas Turner, July 14, 2015

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Thomas Turner. Turner joined the Navy in 1943 and attended boot camp in Virginia with the Seabees. He shipped overseas in early 1944 and headed first for the Solomon Islands in time for the invasion of the Admiralty Islands with the 11th CBs. He was attached to the 71st CB in time for the invasion of Okinawa and went ashore on the first day. at both places, his outfit either built air bases or improved airfields. Turner recall souvenir hunting on Okinawa. He was there when the war ended and was discharge din early 1946.

Oral History Interview with Joe Madrano, July 14, 2014

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Joe Madrano. Madrano was born in 1922 of Native American parents, both of whom attended the Carlisle Indian School. He comments on the itinerate life the family led until settling in Oklahoma. At 16, Madrano joined the Oklahoma National Guard. In 1940, he was accepted into the Aviation Cadet Program and received flight training at Randolph Field. Sent to Avon Park, Florida, Madrano received training in the B-26 bomber. In 1943 he was assigned to the 439th Bomb Squadron in Italy. He tells of missions over Monte Cassino, and recalls concerns of the German 88mm cannon. Following the war’s end, Madrano became an instructor pilot for B-25s. Soon thereafter, he was discharged and went to college on the GI Bill. He then began teaching. Resigning his Air Force commission, he joined the Army National Guard. In 1950 he served in the Korean War. While in Japan, he applied for a position with the Medical Service Corps, which led to training as a helicopter pilot. As such he flew medical evacuation missions in Vietnam. Oral History Interview with George Stroppel, July 14, 2010

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with George Stroppel. Stroppel joined the Navy in September of 1943. He was sent to gunnery school. He served at an ammunition depot in Hawthorne, Nevada. He describes working munitions including how he was part of a crew tasked with disarming 30 to 40 thousand primers so that the shell casings could be recycled. He was then sent to the Pacific and joined the USS New Jersey (BB-62) and worked as an ammunition handler. Stroppel describes his duties and the munitions that he worked with. He also discusses going through a typhoon and briefly mentions shelling Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Stroppel remained on the New Jersey until the 1946 when a back injury sent him to the hospital. He was discharged soon after his release.

Oral History Interview with Glenn Ivy, July 14, 2009

Transcript of an oral interview with Dr. Glenn Ivy. Ivy was attending Texas Tech University when he was inducted into the Army in 1943. When he entered the service, Ivy trained in the Signal Corps to send and receive encoded messages. In Jaunary, 1944, Ivy was sent to India where he was flown over the Himalaya Mountains to Kunming, China. He eventually served as a message courier delivering messages between Chiang Kai-shek and the US 14th Air Force in Kunming. Ivy discusses a situation he was involved in that featured lost plans calling for an invasion of the Chinese coast. When the war ended, Ivy was sent with much Signal Corps equipment to Shanghai to set up a facility to send and receive messages from there. He then shares a few anecdotes about occupation duty in China before being called home due to an inllness suffered by his mother.

Oral History Interview with Uno Johnson, July 14, 2005

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents and oral interview with Uno Johnson. Johnson was born in Veinge, Sweden 26 May 1923. He emigrated to the United States with his parents at the age of six months. He entered the U.S. Army 4 February 1943 and took basic training at Camp Atterbury, Indiana. He was stationed in Florida and had a part-time job in a foundry cleaning the furnaces. He recalls being stationed in Berkeley, California as a truck driver and tells of taking troops to San Francisco to board ships bound for overseas. He experienced an earthquake while stationed there. In February 1945 he boarded the USS Matsonia (D1589) for Oahu, and upon his arrival he began living in a tent in the Ala Moana Crater. There he worked on the maintenance of military vehicles. In February 1946 Johnson returned to the United States aboard the USS Matsonia. He received his discharge 12 February 1946.
