Characterization and optimization of sorbents utilized for emission control during coal gasification. Final report (open access)

Characterization and optimization of sorbents utilized for emission control during coal gasification. Final report

To overcome the shortage of components required for high temperature operation required by current IGCC and PFBC systems, researchers recently have decided that the power systems can be optimized within an operation temperature range of 343 to 538 C. The findings of this research work support the use of iron oxides as an efficient, disposable hot gas desulfurization sorbent candidate to meet the temperature range of 343 to 538 C to further optimize its application for hot gas desulfurization. A parametric study was performed to characterize the controlling parameters dominating the absorption process of hydrogen sulfide by waste iron oxide as a sorbent alternative within a stringent environment with the use of simulated KRW reducing gas. The major parameters studied for hot gas desulfurization with the use of waste iron oxide; mixed in coal ash and reacted with hot sulfurized gas; in hot gas stream include (1) dust cake permeability during heavy dust loading, (2) feasibility of dust cake removal with current back pulse cleaning technology, (3) the reaction temperature, (4) the space velocity of the gas stream. Based on the parametric testing performed on hot gas desulfurization and particulate filtration, the test results of this study indicate that the …

D0 Silicon Upgrad: D0 Silicon Cooling System (open access)

D0 Silicon Upgrad: D0 Silicon Cooling System

The cooling system design is not complete. This paper lays out the general design and some of the design calculations that have been performed up to this date. Further refinement will be performed. This is especially true in the piping layout, piping insulation and detector manifold areas. The silicon detector is cooled by means of a coolant in the beryllium channels that also act as the primary supporting device for the silicon ladders and wedges. The coolant is water with ethylene glycol added as a freezing point depressant. The glycol concentration in the coolant is 30% by weight resulting in a freezing point of approximately -15 C. If the water/glycol is not sufficient for maintaining the desired detector temperature the concentration of the water/glycol may be changed or an alternative coolant may be used.

f{sub B} and f{sub B{sub s}} using NRQCD (open access)

f{sub B} and f{sub B{sub s}} using NRQCD

The authors present results from a calculation of f{sub B} and f{sub B{sub s}} in the quenched approximation. The heavy quark is simulated using an O(1/M{sup 2}) improved NRQCD action, and the tadpole improved clover action is used for the light quarks. The axial current includes the O(1/M) corrections in one-loop perturbation theory and the O(1/M{sup 2}) ones at tree-level. The authors find f{sub B}=152(11)({sup +8}{sub {minus}12})(9)(6) MeV, f{sub B{sub s}}=181(8)({sup +7}{sub {minus}0})(11)(7)({sup +7}{sub {minus}0}) and f{sub B{sub s}}/f{sub B}=1.20(4)({sup +4}{sub {minus}0}), where, in each case, the first error is statistical and the rest are various systematics.

A facility for creating Python extensions in C++ (open access)

A facility for creating Python extensions in C++

Python extensions are usually created by writing the glue that connects Python to the desired new functionality in the C language. While simple extensions do not require much effort, to do the job correctly with full error checking is tedious and prone to errors in reference counting and to memory leaks, especially when errors occur. The resulting program is difficult to read and maintain. By designing suitable C++ classes to wrap the Python C API, we are able to produce extensions that are correct and which clean up after themselves correctly when errors occur. This facility also integrates the C++ and Python exception facilities. This paper briefly describes our package for this purpose, named CXX. The emphasis is on our design choices and the way these contribute to the construction of accurate Python extensions. We also briefly relate the way CXX's facilities for sequence classes allow use of C++'s Standard Template Library (STL) algorithms on C++ sequences.

High energy photon-neutrino interactions (open access)

High energy photon-neutrino interactions

A general decomposition of the amplitudes for the 2 {r_arrow} 2 processes {gamma}{nu} {r_arrow} {gamma}{nu} and {gamma}{gamma} {r_arrow} {nu}{bar {nu}} is obtained using gauge invariance and Bose symmetry. The restrictions implied by this decomposition are investigated for the reaction {gamma}{gamma} {r_arrow} {nu}{bar {nu}} by computing the one-loop helicity amplitudes in the standard model. In the center of mass, where {radical}s = 2{omega}, the cross section grows roughly as {omega}{sup 6} up to the threshold for W-boson production, {radical}s = 2m{sub W}. Astrophysical implications of very high energy photon-neutrino interactions are discussed.

Non-Perturbative Renormalization Constants Using Ward Identities (open access)

Non-Perturbative Renormalization Constants Using Ward Identities

The authors extend the application of vector and axial Ward identities to calculate b{sub A}, b{sub P} and b{sub T}, coefficients that give the mass dependence of the renormalization constants of the corresponding bilinear operators in the quenched theory. The extension relies on using operators with non-degenerate quark masses. It allows a complete determination of the O(a) improvement coefficients for bilinears in the quenched approximation using Ward Identities alone. Only the scale dependent normalization constants Z{sub P}{sup 0} (or Z{sub S}{sup 0}) and Z{sub T} are undetermined. The authors present results of a pilot numerical study using hadronic correlators.

Overview of recent KDP damage experiments and implications for NIF tripler performance (open access)

Overview of recent KDP damage experiments and implications for NIF tripler performance

Considerable attention has been paid over the years to the problem of growing high purity KDP and KD*P to meet damage threshold requirements of ICF lasers at LLNL. The maximum fluence requirement for KD*P triplers on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) is 14.3 J/cm2 at 351 nm in a 3 ns pulse. Currently KD*P (conventional or rapid grown) cannot meet this requirement without laser (pre)conditioning. In this overview, recent experiments to understand laser conditioning and damage phenomena in KDP and KD*P will be discussed. These experiments have lead to a fundamental revision of damage test methods and test result interpretation. In particular, the concept of a damage threshold has given way to measuring performance by damage distributions using millimeter sixed beams. Automated R/l (conditioned) damage tests have shown that the best rapidly grown KDP crystals exhibit the same damage distributions at the best conventionally grown KD*P. Continuous filtration of the growth solution and post growth thermal sealing are shown to increase the damage performance as well. In addition, centimeter size beams from multijoule lasers have been used to study stepwise laser conditioning in KDP. These tests have shown that an increase in the damage threshold of ~1.5X is attainable with …
