Oral History Interview with Charles Callanan, May 14, 2019

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Charles Callanan. Callanan joined the Army in March of 1942. He trained in California, building airstrips, hangars, temporary bridges, Quonset huts and worked on other construction projects. Callanan served as a master sergeant with the 1876th Engineer Aviation Battalion in New Guinea and in the Philippines. He returned to the US in December of 1945.

Oral History Interview with James Gillespie, March 14, 2019

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with James Gillespie. Gillespie joined the Navy in late 1944. Beginning around mid-1945, he served on Corregidor Island, Philippines as Radarman 2nd Class. He worked guard duty and serviced a radar atop a mountain on the island. He recalls his time living and working on Corregidor, and the removal of Japanese prisoners-of-war from the island. He continued his service after the war ended, returning to the US in the spring of 1946 to receive his discharge.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Robert Erfurth. Erfurth joined the Army Air Forces in 1943. He completed Armament and Aerial Gunnery training. He served as a B-24 Armorer with the 8th Air Force, 392nd Bombardment Group. They deployed to England and Erfurth completed 27 bombing missions over Germany and France. He received his discharge in late 1945.

Conversation about high school memories, part 1

Recording of a conversation between Aurangzeb (a 34-year old male teacher) and Gohar-Ur Rehman (a 38 year old male shop owner) in which Aurangzeb talks to Gohar about their memories in high school. Aurangzeb recalls a student who once brought apricot fruits to the class and threw them on the floor. When the teacher entered the class, he slipped on one of the apricots and consequently punished the student. The speakers also recall several other stories/events in this session.

He explains that one person by himself, just like one stick, can be broken easily, but many people together, like many sticks, cannot be so easily broken. Retelling of the story of a king and his seven daughters

Recording of a story about a king and his seven daughters. The king once gives out gifts to each of his daughters according to their choices. One of the daughters asks for a locket, but shortly after receiving her gift, she loses it in the river. A jackal tricks her and eventually she is rescued by her brother. The story is narrated by Sosan Jan, a 54-year old housewife from Danna.

This episode chronicles the formation of the Moonmaids vocal ensemble as the Swingtet at what was then North Texas State Teachers College, and their rise to national fame in the late 1940s with big band leader Vaughn Monroe and his orchestra. The podcast includes selections featuring the singers on WFAA radio in Dallas, at the former Camp Howze in Gainesville, TX, and live from Denton with Vaughn Monroe in 1949.

Retelling of the story of a man and his cunning wife

Recording of a traditional narrative where a cunning wife puts her husband to test by pretending to be ill all the time. The husband uses all possible means to cure her but to no avail. He then asks his wife to suggest what else he could do to cure her. She asks him to disgrace his mother. He disgraces her mother instead. His wife is shocked to see this. However, he responds to her saying that he did what she had asked him to do in order to cure her illness. The narrator Abdul Qayum (a 60-year old male factory worker) is narrating the story to two young speakers of Mankiyali (Abdul Haq and Aurangzeb).
