FY06 LDRD Final Report Data Intensive Computing (open access)

FY06 LDRD Final Report Data Intensive Computing

The goal of the data intensive LDRD was to investigate the fundamental research issues underlying the application of High Performance Computing (HPC) resources to the challenges of data intensive computing. We explored these issues through four targeted case studies derived from growing LLNL programs: high speed text processing, massive semantic graph analysis, streaming image feature extraction, and processing of streaming sensor data. The ultimate goal of this analysis was to provide scalable data management algorithms to support the development of a predictive knowledge capability consistent with the direction of Aurora.

ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS TO PD MEMBRANES FOR HYDROGEN PURIFICATION (open access)

ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS TO PD MEMBRANES FOR HYDROGEN PURIFICATION

Development of advanced hydrogen separation membranes in support of hydrogen production processes such as coal gasification and as front end gas purifiers for fuel cell based system is paramount to the successful implementation of a national hydrogen economy. Current generation metallic hydrogen separation membranes are based on Pd-alloys. Although the technology has proven successful, at issue is the high cost of palladium. Evaluation of non-noble metal based dense metallic separation membranes is currently receiving national and international attention. The focal point of the reported work was to evaluate two different classes of materials for potential replacement of conventional Pd-alloy purification/diffuser membranes. Crystalline V-Ni-Ti and Amorphous Fe- and Co-based metallic glass alloys have been evaluated using both electrochemical and gaseous hydrogen permeation testing techniques..

Oral History Interview with Zeb Alford, April 13, 2007 transcript

Oral History Interview with Zeb Alford, April 13, 2007

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Zeb Alford. Alford joined the Navy V-12 Program in July of 1943. He trained as an engineering officer. He entered the Naval Academy in 1944 and graduated in 1947, providing details of his schooling at the Academy. He served for two years aboard the USS Charles R. Ware (DD-865). He graduated from Submarine School in 1949. Alford retired from the Navy in September of 1973 as a captain.

Developing and Extending a Cyberinfrastructure Model (open access)

Developing and Extending a Cyberinfrastructure Model

Increasingly, research and education institutions are realizing the strategic value and challenge of deploying and supporting institutional cyberinfrastructure (CI). Cyberinfrastructure is composed of high performance computing systems, massive storage systems, visualization systems, and advanced networks to interconnect the components within and across institutions and research communities. CI also includes the professionals with expertise in scientific application and algorithm development and parallel systems operation. Unlike ?regular? IT infrastructure, the manner in which the components are configured and skills to do so are highly specific and specialized. Planning and coordinating these assets is a fundamental step toward enhancing an institution?s research competitiveness and return on personnel, technology, and facilities investments. Coordinated deployment of CI assets has implications across the institution. Consider the VC for Research whose new faculty in the Life Sciences are now asking for simulation systems rather than wet labs, or the Provost who lost another faculty candidate to a peer institution that offered computational support for research, or the VC for Administration who has seen a spike in power and cooling demands from many of the labs and office spaces being converted to house systems. These are just some of the issues that research institutions are wrestling with as …

Experimental Design for the INL Sample Collection Operational Test (open access)

Experimental Design for the INL Sample Collection Operational Test

This document describes the test events and numbers of samples comprising the experimental design that was developed for the contamination, decontamination, and sampling of a building at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). This study is referred to as the INL Sample Collection Operational Test. Specific objectives were developed to guide the construction of the experimental design. The main objective is to assess the relative abilities of judgmental and probabilistic sampling strategies to detect contamination in individual rooms or on a whole floor of the INL building. A second objective is to assess the use of probabilistic and Bayesian (judgmental + probabilistic) sampling strategies to make clearance statements of the form “X% confidence that at least Y% of a room (or floor of the building) is not contaminated. The experimental design described in this report includes five test events. The test events (i) vary the floor of the building on which the contaminant will be released, (ii) provide for varying or adjusting the concentration of contaminant released to obtain the ideal concentration gradient across a floor of the building, and (iii) investigate overt as well as covert release of contaminants. The ideal contaminant gradient would have high concentrations of contaminant in …

Mass- and temperature-dependent diffusion coefficients for lightnoble gases for the TOUGH2-EOSN Model (open access)

Mass- and temperature-dependent diffusion coefficients for lightnoble gases for the TOUGH2-EOSN Model

This report describes modifications made to the EOSN module(Shan and Pruess, 2003) of the nonisothermal multiphase flow simulatorTOUGH2 (Pruess, et al., 1999). The EOSN fluid property module simulatestransport of water, brine, air, and noble gases or CO2 in the subsurface. In the standard version of the EOSN module, diffusion coefficients can bespecified by the user, but there is no allowance for liquid-phasediffusion coefficients to change with temperature. Furthermore, usersmust specify radiogenic sources of heat and helium for each element indata block GENER, which can be a time-consuming task for models withlarge numbers of elements. Our modifications seek to increase thefunctionality and efficiency of using TOUGH2-EOSN by allowing for mass-and temperature-dependent liquid-phase diffusion coefficients for heliumand neon and specification of radiogenic heat and helium production as aproperty of a material. The modified version is based on TOUGH2-EOSN andthus requires familiarity with the capabilities and input formats of theTOUGH2 code (Pruess, et al., 1999) and the EOSN module (Shan and Pruess,2003). This report only details our modifications and how to properlyutilize them.

Magnetism of NiMn2O4-Fe3O4 spinel interfaces (open access)

Magnetism of NiMn2O4-Fe3O4 spinel interfaces

We investigate the magnetic properties of the isostructural spinel-spinel interface of NiMn{sub 2}O{sub 4}(NMO)-Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4}. Although the magnetic transition temperature of the NMO film is preserved, both bulk and interface sensitive measurements demonstrate that the interface exhibits strong interfacial magnetic coupling up to room temperature. While NMO thin films have a ferrimagnetic transition temperature of 60 K, both NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} and MnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} are ferrimagnetic at room temperature. Our experimental results suggest that these magnetic properties arise from a thin interdiffused region of (Fe,Mn,Ni){sub 3}O{sub 4} at the interface, leading to Mn and Ni magnetic properties similar to those of MnFe{sub 2}O{sub 4} and NiFe{sub 2}O{sub 4}.
