Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) Process Validation Technical Support Plan (open access)

Spent Nuclear Fuel (SNF) Process Validation Technical Support Plan

The purpose of Process Validation is to confirm that nominal process operations are consistent with the expected process envelope. The Process Validation activities described in this document are not part of the safety basis, but are expected to demonstrate that the process operates well within the safety basis. Some adjustments to the process may be made as a result of information gathered in Process Validation.

The AERI/GOES Retrievals Versus Radiosondes for Driving SCMs (open access)

The AERI/GOES Retrievals Versus Radiosondes for Driving SCMs

Single-Column Models (SCMs) require observations to provide suitable initial and boundary conditions. To meet this need, the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program conducts Intensive Observing Periods (IOPs) to provide 3-hourly radiosondes and other observations. However, such high-frequency sonde launches can be expensive. Therefore, the ARM program can only support a couple IOPs each year with each one lasting 2-4 weeks. In order to reduce the need for high-frequency sonde launches and to potentially expand the periods available for SCM simulations, they have conducted a study using the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) and Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) temperature and moisture retrievals, instead of radiosondes, in the ARM variational analysis system (Zhang and Lin, 1997; Zhang et al., 2000) to derive the large-scale forcing terms for driving SCMs during the March 1999 IOP. They have compared the large-scale forcing and associated SCM simulations for various combinations of data sources used in the variational analysis.

Texas Register, Volume 25, Number 41, Pages 10247-10428, October 13, 2000

A weekly publication, the Texas Register serves as the journal of state agency rulemaking for Texas. Information published in the Texas Register includes proposed, adopted, withdrawn and emergency rule actions, notices of state agency review of agency rules, governor's appointments, attorney general opinions, and miscellaneous documents such as requests for proposals. After adoption, these rulemaking actions are codified into the Texas Administrative Code.

Diagnosing Plasma Gradients Using Spectral Line Shapes (open access)

Diagnosing Plasma Gradients Using Spectral Line Shapes

The development of a set of stable implosions using indirectly driven plastic microspheres with argon (0.1 atm) doped deuterium (50 atm) has provided a unique source for testing the plasma spectroscopy of the high energy density imploded core. The core reaches electron densities of > 10{sup 24} cm{sup -3} with temperatures of {approx} 1 keV and has been shown to be reproducible on a shot to shot basis. Moreover, it has been shown that not only the peak temperature and density are consistent, but that the temporal evolution of the mean temperature and density of the final phase of the implosion is also reproducible. These imploding cores provide a unique opportunity to test aspects of plasma spectroscopy that are difficult to study in other plasmas and to develop methods to test stable hydrodynamics. We present experimental results and discuss spectroscopic analysis algorithms to determine consistent temperature and density fits to determine gradients in the plasma.

Behavior of Dense, Immiscible Solvents in Fractured Clay-rich Soils (open access)

Behavior of Dense, Immiscible Solvents in Fractured Clay-rich Soils

This research program addresses the nature and distribution of chlorinated solvent DNAPL sources in fractured clays and weathered shales, and the potential for natural attenuation of plumes derived from these sources. Specific objectives include: (1) Investigate the factors controlling migration of chlorinated solvent DNAPLs in fine-grained, highly structured soils and weathered shale bedrock. (2) Investigate the influence of ''matrix diffusion'' on the dissolution and apparent disappearance of residual DNAPL. (3) Investigate potential for biodegradation of chlorinated solvents in fractured and weathered shales at an existing contaminated field site and through the use of laboratory studies in microcosms and undisturbed columns of fractured shale saprolite. (4) Comparison of DNAPL behavior in different types of fractured clay-rich materials.
