Applied Potential Corrosion of Aluminum and 18-8 Stainless Steel Alloys (open access)

Applied Potential Corrosion of Aluminum and 18-8 Stainless Steel Alloys

Introduction: In anticipation of the design of equipment for heat transfer tests, a series of short exposure corrosion tests was initiated in an effort to determine the order of magnitude of the corrosion involved. Information was required on the effect on corrosion rates of applying a potential between two concentric tubes, the annulus between them containing condensate water.

Optimum Design of Catalytic Towers (open access)

Optimum Design of Catalytic Towers

Abstract: "This paper gives an arithmetic method of computing the number of sections required in a catalytic tower to produce a given enrichment. It also tells how to calculate the enrichment of a tower with a given number of sections. The problem of the most economical design of catalytic towers is solved. Methods are given for determining the temperature, the efficiencies of catalyst beds and strippers, the relative production rate, and the water vapor-hydrogen gas ratio which give the optimum combination of operating pressure, cross sectional area, number of sections, and volume of catalyst in the tower. Simple directions as to how to make the calculations are included."

Preparation of Anhydrous Vanadium Trifluoride (open access)

Preparation of Anhydrous Vanadium Trifluoride

Report discussing a procedure for the preparation of anhydrous vanadium trifluoride. From abstract: "By selecting proper operating conditions and equipment, a method of preparation was devised such that anhydrous vanadium trifluoride of high purity was produced reliably in five pound batches." The method of preparation involves manipulating the starting material, vanadium pentoxide.

Radiochemical Investigation of the Spontaneous Fission of Cm²⁴² (open access)

Radiochemical Investigation of the Spontaneous Fission of Cm²⁴²

Report discussing the distribution of mass in the spontaneous fission of Cm²⁴², which was investigated by a radiochemical determination of the fission yields of twenty-one nuclides ranging in mass from 91 to 140. "Corrections for absorption, scattering, geometry, decay, and fractional saturation were applied to obtain saturation disintegration rates, which, with the known fission rate of the source, give the fission yields."

Nuclear Safety of Vessels in Arrays (open access)

Nuclear Safety of Vessels in Arrays

Knowledge of the effects of interaction between vessels or units containing fissionable material is important for the safe handling, storage, and shipping of these containers. Expressions for the effect of neutron interaction on criticality have been derived for the cases of bare and tamped spheres as well as tamped, infinitely tall cylinders containing fissionable material. The method considered did not apply to the interaction between bae cylinders. In practice, the interaction between vessels in a separations plant or between storage units in an array more nearly approaches the bare condition than it does the tamped condition. The formulation of a method that is applicable to bare or water-tamped and to tall or short vessels will be presented at this time.

A Scintillation Nuclear Incident Alarm Monitor (open access)

A Scintillation Nuclear Incident Alarm Monitor

This report was written to describe the instrument and test results obtained. It is understandably imperative that such alarming devices be incorporated in various areas of the plant to provide an alarm or warning for increasing dose rate from gauss radiation fields.
