This report is a document summarizing all information available on life aspects of various measures proposed to reduce or eliminate corrosion of Van Stone flanger.

Report discussing a method for the stepwise calculation of the number of transfer units utilized in a given solvent extraction operation. "Use of the method results in a very appreciable saving in time of calculation with an error of 1.5% for the runs tested. The error tends to become smaller with increasing total numbers of transfer units involved."

Abstract: "Discussion is directed toward eventual optimization of the largest diffusion-pump systems. Less than 100 diffusion pump fluid molecules per cm 2/sec are possible to detect using an accumulation method. Optimization discussed demands highest possible system speed compatible with the above contamination rate. Bakeable oil diffusion pump systems, with equal orifice valve-tap units, without conventional baffling, permit theoretical through-put speeds up to 0.3 of the system orifice. The average backstreaming rate of oil in two unconventionally baffled commercial pumps of 6-in. and 10-in. size is reduced to < 3 x 10-(-4) g/cm-2/24 hr, including heating and cooling the pump boiler. A Ho factor of >0.4 is maintained. Results on trapping with activated alumina, retained by a wire mesh, at both liquid-nitrogen and room temperature are included. A variety of pumping speed measurements and bakeable combination valve-trap units are discussed."

This report discusses the process of zirconium purification, providing an alternate method for converting ZrCl4 solution to the oxide in order to free it from small amounts of hafnium impurity that are naturally present.

In this report it reviews a possible declassification of the content of report CP-2782 (February 15, 1945) that presents the data of the most careful measurements of the thermal neutron cross section of 9.2h Xe135 and re-evaluation of the particular methods of measuring neutron flux employed in this experiment had been made for other purposes.

"A comparison of grafting to two thicknesses of polypropylene film is made using isotope and electron accelerator initiation. The results indicate that the grafting of methacrylic acid: styrene to polypropylene is mainly a surface reaction."

This is the second quarterly report on the work done under Contract AT(04-3)-189, Project Agreement No. 27. The results reported here have to do primarily with the loss in a rectangular (1/2" x 1-3/4") channel in the horizontal orientation, without contraction-expansion inserts.
