Abstract: "A measurement was made of the dissociation of vibrationally-excited H2+ ions by photons having quantum energy in the vicinity of 4 e.v. The calculated cross section from theory is 3 x 10-(-18) cm-2. The experimental result is 10-(-17) cm-2; a factor of 10 uncertainty is present because the photon intensity was unknown by that factor."

Abstract: "The neutrons from the linear pinch in Berkeley have been shown to originate from deuteron collisions with a large net center-of-mass velocity in one direction along the axis of the pinch tube. The interpretation of this result is that the neutron production associated with the pinch is non-thermonuclear in origin. The object of this paper is to review the experimental evidence and discuss a possible source of the neutron production."

Discussion on Optimization of Large Oil-Pumped Ultra-High Vacuum Systems

Abstract: "Discussion is directed toward eventual optimization of the largest diffusion-pump systems. Less than 100 diffusion pump fluid molecules per cm 2/sec are possible to detect using an accumulation method. Optimization discussed demands highest possible system speed compatible with the above contamination rate. Bakeable oil diffusion pump systems, with equal orifice valve-tap units, without conventional baffling, permit theoretical through-put speeds up to 0.3 of the system orifice. The average backstreaming rate of oil in two unconventionally baffled commercial pumps of 6-in. and 10-in. size is reduced to < 3 x 10-(-4) g/cm-2/24 hr, including heating and cooling the pump boiler. A Ho factor of >0.4 is maintained. Results on trapping with activated alumina, retained by a wire mesh, at both liquid-nitrogen and room temperature are included. A variety of pumping speed measurements and bakeable combination valve-trap units are discussed."

The Metabolism of Chyle Cholesterol in the Rat

Abstract: "Observations on the metabolism of chyle cholesterol in the rat show that exogenous cholesterol entering the systemic circulation in chyle exists in lipoproteins of low density (including chylomicrons) migrating with a high Sf rate (i.e.>400) in the ultracentrifuge. Following entry into the systemic circulation these molecules are rapidly removed from the plasma. This "clearing" of serum chyle cholesterol is a tissue phenomenon, the liver being the predominant site. Within the liver the chyle cholesterol esters are at least partially hydrolyzed; hydrolysis apparently does not occur in the plasma to any appreciable extent. After its entry into the liver exogenous cholesterol, if normally metabolized, presumably mixes with and becomes indistinguishable from cholesterol produced by endogenous synthesis."

Paramagnetic Susceptibilities and Electronic Structures of Aqueous Cations of Elements 92 to 95

Abstract: Magnetic susceptibilities per gram atomic weight of elements 92 to 95 in most of their oxidation states were measured at 20°C on 0.1 ml of solution which was 0.005 to 0.09M in heavy element. The values obtained (all paramagnetic) in units × 106 were: U(IV), 3690; Np(VI), 2060; Np(V), 4120; Np(IV), 4000; Pu(IV), 1610; Pu(III), 370; Am(III), 720. The results could be interpreted only on the basis of electronic configurations 5fn, even though susceptibilities were generally lower than the theoretical values and lower than experimental values for corresponding lanthanide 4fn cations. The lower values should be expected as a result of the Stark effect produced by electric fields of anions and of water dipoles. Failure of the Russell‐Saunders approximation to the coupling between electrons may account for some of the error in the theoretical calculations. That the susceptibilities of Pu(III) and Am(III) are manyfold lower than those of Sm(III) and Eu(III), respectively, is attributed to wider multiplet splitting in the actinide atoms.

Antiproton-Nucleon Cross Sections From 0.5 To 1.0 Bev

Antiproton-production and nucleon-interaction cross sections were investigated for antiprotons in the energy range 0.5 to 1.0 Bev. The antiprotons were distinguished from other particles produced at the Bevatron by a system of scintillation- and velocity-selecting Cerenkov counters. The excitation function and momentum distribution were recorded for antiproton production in carbon and compared with statistical model expectations.

Photodisintegration Cross Section of Beryllium Near Threshold

Abstract. The cross section of photoneutron production in Be9 at energies of 1.692, 1.720, and 1.78 Mev has been investigated using radioisotope gamma-ray sources. Neutron counting was by manganous sulfate bathe and a long counter. Gamma-ray counting was by a scintillation spectrometer consisting of a NaI(T1) scintillation crystal and a 256 channel pulse-height analyzer. A theoretical treatment of the P [right arrow] S transition near threshold using square-well potentials is also presented.

Uniformity Of Output From A Low-Amplitude Plane-Wave Nitroguanidine Explosive System

In the Plowshare Program many calculations of the effects of underground explosions are made. Usually these are done on high-speed digital computers. The effects are calculated for ranges up to hundreds of meters from the explosion; at these ranges pressures become less than one kilobar. In order to make these calculations, information about the properties of the materials involved is required. Benedick [13] has developed a low-pressure, plane-wave lens using nitroguanidine. It was decided to use a similar lens in the Plowshare Program. A number of lenses were built using Benedick's technique. This report is of a study of simultaneity and pressure uniformity of these lenses, with some attempts at development of a reflection pressure vs particle velocity curve for them.
