Oral History Interview with Alfred Schmitz, June 12, 2002

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Alfred Schmitz. He was born on August 28, 1925 in Austin, Texas. He enlisted in the Navy in June 1944 and upon graduation from basic training and Fireman "A" School, he was assigned to the USS La Prade (DE-409) and sailed to Pearl Harbor. He next sailed in September 1944 with a hunter-killer task group during the Palau Islands invasion. He recalls the ship being involved in a joint attack on a Japanese midget submarine in the entrance to Kossol Roads Harbor, where the sub was destroyed with depth charges. In addition, he describes the ship's participation in the invasion of Okinawa servings as part of a submarine screen between the battleships and the beach and on rotating picket ship duty with other smaller vessels. After Okinawa he recalls that the ship joined the Japan occupation forces at Sasebo on September 23, 1945. During this period he recalls being sent to Nagasaki immediately after the atomic bomb was dropped to pick up Navy Seabees. He recalls that the ship returned to San Diego where he was part of the decommissioning crew until May 1946.

Oral History Interview with Richard Halfast, June 12, 2008

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Richard Halfast. Born in Corry, Pennsylvania 20 May 1916, Halfast graduated from high school in 1934. He attended Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, graduating in 1938 and receiving a Medical Degree in 1942. He interned at the City Hospital in Springfield, Ohio until August 1943, at which time he entered the US Army. Reporting to the Camp Davis, North Carolina station hospital, Halfast was trained to do various urological procedures. He was then transferred to the 74th General Hospital and sent to Devonshire, New Hampshire where they went aboard HMS Queen Mary for a five day trip to Glasgow, Scotland. He tells of setting up a hospital in Bristol, England in preparation for receiving wounded from Operation Overlord. They began receiving wounded 7 June 1944. In June 1945, Halfast was sent to the 1st Auxiliary Surgical Group as a triage officer in the 114th Field Hospital. He describes the various types of wounds treated and recalls having twenty-six amputations in one day. He recalls visiting Dachau and describes what he saw there. The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with John Joseph O???Malley. O???Malley was drafted into the Army in 1943. In March of 1944 he was sent for airborne training at Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. He fought with the 84th Infantry Division in Germany and Belgium, pushing forward from Geilenkirchen, Germany in November, 1944 to Schnackenburg, Germany and ultimately contacting the Russian Army on the Elbe River in April, 1945. O'Malley spoke fluent German and served as an Army interpreter. He was honorably discharged in 1946.

Oral History Interview with Larry Parker, June 12, 2010

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Larry Parker. Parker was drafted into the Army Air Forces in 1943. He was trained and joined the crew of a B-17 as a co-pilot. He was a member of a specialized unit trained to carry wooden life boats slung under the bomb bay and to drop them by parachute when downed aircrews were discovered. Parker operated out of the Philippines and eventually was sent to Ie Shima. He details several lifeboat drops. His plane carried General Stillwell to Okinawa after the death of General Buckner. He describes Stillwell almost melting one of the plane’s guns due to continuous fire during this trip. Parker also witnessed the Japanese delegation that landed on Ie Shima at the end of the war. He left the service in December 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Billy Hill. Hill joined the Navy around 1941. He completed Medical Tech School and Pharmacy School. Beginning in March of 1944, Hill served as a Pharmacist Mate aboard the hospital ship USS Bountiful (AH-9). They traveled to Honolulu, the Marshall Islands, Saipan, the Mariana Islands, Peleliu, Leyte and Iwo Jima, evacuating and caring for the wounded. He continued his service after the war ended, retiring in 1966.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Ollie Schaetter. Schaetter shares some of his family history of their funeral home in Fredericksburg, Texas. He joined the Navy in December of 1943. In California he worked in the Chief Master at Arms office on the US Navy Hospital staff. Beginning in December of 1944 he served as Pharmacist’s Mate 3rd Class aboard the USS Goshen (APA-108). They traveled to the Marshall Islands, Okinawa and Guadalcanal. He worked for 6 months in the surgery department in the Philippines. He was discharged in April of 1945.

Oral History Interview with Willie Ray Snow, June 12, 2006

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Willie Ray Snow. Snow joined the Navy in May of 1943. He served as a Radio Technician Second Class, then a Petty Officer. In August of 1944 he traveled to New Guinea and Australia, and in January of 1945 he boarded the USS Flasher (SS-249). Snow participated in her sixth war patrol along the coast of Indochina. In February they sank a sea truck and a cargo ship with torpedoes. They completed patrols in April. Snow was discharged in December of 1945.

Lindsey went to Galveston Island, Texas, with her husband (Walter Lee Booth) in 1940, as Lee was assigned to Ft. Crockett. When her husband went overseas, she went to live with her mother on a plantation in Louisiana. She speaks of how rationing had little impact on them at the farm.

Oral History Interview with Claud Grizzell, June 12, 2001

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Claud Grizzell. Grizzell was born in Denison, Texas on 19 June 1916 and joined the Navy in 1939. He attended machinist mate school following basic training in June 1940 and was assigned to the USS Cushing (DD-376) at Pearl Harbor. Upon returning to Hawaii, Grizzell describes the devastation at Pearl Harbor. He remembers the Cushing escorting various combatants to the South Pacific and arriving at Espiritu Santo Island. He recalls that the Cushing was sunk by a Japanese battleship the night of 13 November 1942 while in a task force sailing out to intercept the Japanese Fleet during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. He says that one-third of the crew was lost and that he and the others spent the night in the water before being picked up by landing craft. He recounts several experiences on the island over the following weeks while he and the other survivors were awaiting transportation back to the States on Survivors’ Leave. Grizzell recalls that he was assigned to the commissioning crew of USS Mission Bay (CVE-59) in September 1943. He recalls that the carrier alternated submarine patrol duty in the South …
