Oral History Interview with Lillie Aleman, July 11, 2016

Lillie Ann Aleman was born in 1942 in Forth Worth and would migrate to Galveston when she was four years old. Her father, Pedro Enriquez, was a WWII veteran who became active in the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) Council #151 and defended equal employment opportunities. Aleman would become active in LULAC after her mother, Tomasa Lozano Enriquez, co-founded LULAC women's council #639 and encouraged Aleman to become involved. She talks about instances of discrimination while growing-up on the island, how LULAC merged the councils in 1999, how she was designated as "LULAC Woman of the Year" due to her participation in several initiatives, how she became president of the merged LULAC council, and her engagement in cross-racial efforts to address affordable housing after Hurricane Ike. Aleman also speaks about voting rights, youth programs, and national LULAC's political agenda.

Oral History Interview with Johnny Jones, July 11, 2016

Mr. Jones was born in Conroe and raised in both Tamina and near Conroe; his parents lived on two properties owned by Dr. Hayes and worked for him in various capacities. Mr. Jones described going to segregated schools, segregation in Conroe, and his time at Booker T. Washington school. He was at TSU in Houston during the riot and participated in a march to downtown. He was drafted into the military and discusses race relations in Germany during the Vietnam War. He returned to the US where he worked as a welder and engineer while pursuing a music career. He recently was photographed for a book on Tamina and described his experience going to see the exhibit at the Smithsonian. Mr. Jones provided a great description of segregation in Conroe, the environment at TSU, and Tamina.

K.T. McLeaish was born and raised Granbury, Texas. She briefly attended the University of Northern Colorado before returning to Texas. McLeaish is retired from a long-time, non-paying career of political activism (she was once an elected member of the Democratic National Committee). She's been married to a prominent West Texas criminal lawyer (Michael McLeaish) for 32 years and they've lived in Odessa, TX for the past 34 years. She has also been on the now closed Premium Basin Planned Parenthood.
