Diffusion of Fission Gases Through Uranium Oxide and Uranium Carbide (open access)

Diffusion of Fission Gases Through Uranium Oxide and Uranium Carbide

A program has begun embodying a study of the diffusion rates of krypton and xenon into unirradiated UO2 and UC at temperatures between 1000°C and 2500°C.The experimental technique is described in some detail, involving exposure of UO2 and UC samples to a Kr85 atmosphere at various temperatures, removal of surface-adsorbed krypton, dissolution of the sample, collection and ion chamber measurement of the diffused Kr, and calculation of diffusion coefficients from these data.

Decoupling Concepts and Project Cowboy (open access)

Decoupling Concepts and Project Cowboy

This paper for the Project Vela Technical Symposium is intended to be a brief resume of the principle results of the Cowboy program. The material is taken from a report entitled "Use of Large Cavities to Reduce Seismic Waves from Underground Explosions" by Herbat, Werth, and Spring (1960). As a result, no effect is made to justify each step in the analysis; reference should be made to the complete report.

Recalculation of the Critical Size and Multiplication Constant of a Homogeneous UO2 - D2O Mixtures (open access)

Recalculation of the Critical Size and Multiplication Constant of a Homogeneous UO2 - D2O Mixtures

The multiplication constant and optimal concentration of a slurry pile is recalculated on the basis of Mitchell's recent experiments on resonance absorption. The smallest chain reacting unit contains 45 to 55 m3 of D2O.

Mathematical Theory of the Lethal Action of Radiation on Yeast Cells (open access)

Mathematical Theory of the Lethal Action of Radiation on Yeast Cells

The main part of this thesis is devoted to the derivation and study of formulas for the probability of survival of the haploid and diploid yeast cell, based on models proposed by Zirkle and Tobias. Some properties of so-called completely monotonic functions are developed, and the results are applied to the investigation of some of the more complicated formulas. Finally the theoretical expressions are compared with the experimental data obtained by Tobias.

Semipermanent Freeze Plug Tests for HRT-CP (open access)

Semipermanent Freeze Plug Tests for HRT-CP

Five uninsulated semipermanent freeze coils, series connected, can be frozen when submerged in 70 F water with a Freon-11 flow rate of 1.85 gpm at an inlet temperature of -40 F. The refrigeration unit of the HRT-CP is capable of delivering >3 gpm to a similar semipermanent freeze coil system located in Cell C. Therefore the number of F-11 risers required in Cell C of the HRT-CP can be minimized by series connecting this many semipermanent freeze coils where required.

High Pressure Pump Seal Development (open access)

High Pressure Pump Seal Development

"Results of tests indicate that the nucerite-bearium seal system is compatible. This combination was operated as long as 9 hours without serious damage. In other work, the test rig was modified to eliminate pressure fluctuations and extraneous dirt, and Type IIA seal parts were designed."
