Cryostat "UV" Relief Valve Selection and Process Flow (open access)

Cryostat "UV" Relief Valve Selection and Process Flow

This report describes the selection of the relief valves for the D-Zero cryostats. The selection was based on the flow requirements calculated in D-Zero engineering note 3740.214,224-EN-6 under fire conditions (1200 F, no vacuum) for the central cryostat; 264 SCFM. This value was calculated from section 5.3.5 of 'Pressure Relief Device Standards; S 1.3-Compressed Gas Storage Containers', published by the Compressed Gas Association, Inc. The flow calculated above is far greater than the required fire condition flow capacity of 264 SCFM. The improbable 70 F flow temperature value of 738 SCFM is still much greater than the required fire capacity. The flow capacity of the paralleled supplemental rupture disc is 2640 SCFM, independently greater than the fire condition flow requirement.

Flexible Support Stanchion

Figure 1 shows the assembly drawing of the Central Calorimeter Cryostat Flexible Support Stanchion. Figures 2 and 3 show the Flexible Support STanchion in detail. These Stanchions support the cryostat safely, reduce the heat load to the cryostat from the ambient by a factor of more than ten, provide a spring like action that reduce the loads created by thermal contraction of the cryostat and position the cryostate accurately. Table 1 shows all of the details of the Flexible Support system for the C.C. Cryostat.

Geothermal alteration of sediments in the Salton Sea scientific drill hole: Petrophysical properties and mass changes during alteration: Final report (open access)

Geothermal alteration of sediments in the Salton Sea scientific drill hole: Petrophysical properties and mass changes during alteration: Final report

This report has been divided into two sections. The first deals with the results of the petrophysical measurements, and the second concentrates on the distribution of alteration minerals and textures, and on a series of calculations of geochemical changes that occurred during alteration. 32 refs., 23 figs., 10 tabs.

Multidimensional modeling of convective heat transfer with application to IC engines: Technical progress report (open access)

Multidimensional modeling of convective heat transfer with application to IC engines: Technical progress report

The objective of this project is to develop a more comprehensive understanding of the convective heat transfer process in complex, unsteady turbulent reacting flows, typical of those which occur in internal combustion engines. The specific area of research is the representation of heat transfer in detailed multi-dimensional Navier-Stokes models, and modeling of turbulent transport mechanisms. The detailed tasks include a review of relevant prior work. Based on this review, and original work done under this contract, several modeling approaches are being formulated and will be further studied and tested. The tests will be carried out on flow cases which have relevance to engine flows, and for which reliable experimental data exist. This report discusses the results of current work and describes experiments to be performed.

[Report of Foreign Travel: International Workshop on Radioiodinated Free Fatty Acids, Amsterdam]

The traveler participated in the Second International Workshop on Radioiodinated Free Fatty Acids in Amsterdam, The Netherlands where he presented an invited paper describing the pioneering work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) involving the design, development and testing of new radioiodinated methyl-branched fatty acids for evaluation of heart disease. He also chaired a technical session on the testing of new agents in various in vitro and in vivo systems. He also visited the Institute for Clinical and Experimental Nuclear Medicine in Bonn, West Germany, to review, discuss, plan and coordinate collaborative investigations with that institution. In addition, he visited the Cyclotron Research Center in Liege, Belgium, to discuss continuing collaborative studies with the Osmium-191/Iridium-191m radionuclide generator system, and to complete manuscripts and plan future studies.

Summary of x-ray ring performance before the 1987 shutdown (open access)

Summary of x-ray ring performance before the 1987 shutdown

On February 28, 1987, the x-ray ring was shut down for major modifications. 627 Ampere hours of time integrated current had been accumulated and lifetimes of 25 and 9 hours had been routinely achieved at 50 and 200 mA, respectively. This paper summarizes pressure and lifetime behavior since the first bakeout in March 1984, when the lifetime at 20 mA was about 20 minutes.
