The turbine break internal efficiency at design operating conditions was 0.877; the maximum efficiency of 0.886 occurred at a pressure ratio of 4.0 at 120 percent of design equivalent rotor speed. In general, the turbine yielded a wide range of efficient operation, permitting flexibility in the choice of different modes of engine operation."

"An experimental investigation of the internal-flow conditions of a J71 experimental turbine equipped with 97-percent-design stator areas was conducted at equivalent design speed and near equivalent design work. The results of the investigation indicate that the stage work distribution closely approximates design, the actual distribution being 44.1, 33.4, and 22.5 percent for the first, second, and third stages, respectively. The first-, second-, and third-stage efficiencies were 0.894, 0.858, and 0.792, respectively" (p. 1).

Data were obtained with a short bellmouth inlet and a 20-foot duct section of uniform diameter between the inlet and compressor. Results regarding the steady-state characteristics, acceleration characteristics, compressor stall limits, and surge characteristics are provided.

Report discussing tests of a model of a B-36J/RF-84F tip-coupled airplane to evaluate the flutter characteristics where bomber-body freedoms are allowed and to obtain information about the dynamic stability characteristics. The variables studied were the skew angle of the fighter-bomber coupling, the fighter longitudinal position, the fighter and bomber loading, angle of sideslip, degrees of body freedom, and number of fighters. Flutter was primarily found to occur when the fighter roll frequency was near the natural chordwise-bending frequency of the bomber wing.

Performance characteristics of cylindrical target-type thrust reversers

From tests on cylindrical target-type thrust reversers, it was found that the reverser frontal area, lip angle, end-plate angle, and end-plate depth had important effects on reverse-thrust performance. Frontal area, reverser depth, lip angle, and end-plate angele had important effects on the spacing required for unrestricted nozzle flow. For reverse-thrust ratios greater than 64 percent, the reversed flow attached to the 7 degree cowl in quiescent air. Swept-type cylindrical reversers were generally unstable. The thrust-modulation characteristics of a cylindrical target-type thrust reverser were found to be satisfactory.

The results indicate that the static margin, which was fairly constant through the lift range, decrease from 32 to 27 percent mean aerodynamic chord with increase in Mach number from 1.41 to 2.01.

Report presenting a wind-tunnel investigation at low speed to determine the effects of sideslip on the static longitudinal trim characteristics of three fighter-type airplane models. The three models consisted of a 45 degree swept-wing model with a horizontal tail geometrically similar to the wing and mounted slightly below the wing, a clipped-delta-wing model with a horizontal tail mounted in a moderately high position, and a 60 degree delta-wing with no horizontal tail. Results regarding static longitudinal stability, variation of pitching-moment coefficient with sideslip, effect of modifications to Model B on static longitudinal stability and variation of pitching-moment coefficient with sideslip, and static lateral stability are presented.
