A PULSED EDDY CURRENT TEST SYSTEM USING REFLECTED FIELDS (open access)

A PULSED EDDY CURRENT TEST SYSTEM USING REFLECTED FIELDS

An eddy current test system is described in which the test information is detected as a series of fields reflected from the metal surface and interior. Pulsed electromagnetic fields are caused to impinge upon the test specimen. These fields are restricted to a small cross sectional area over a path in space long enough to be useful for test purposes by devices called mask-apenture assemblies. This approach provides a number of advantages over conventional eddy current methods of comparable capabilities, including superior surface resolution, a reduction in circuit complexity, and an improvement in stability and reliability. Various applications and test results are discussed. (auth)

Neutron Radiographic Inspection of Heavy Metals and Hydrogenous Materials (open access)

Neutron Radiographic Inspection of Heavy Metals and Hydrogenous Materials

The possibility of using thermal-neutron radiography for inspecting heavy metals and hydrogenous materials was examined. The data include exposure curves, contrast sensitivities, and an assessment of the influence of higher energy neutrons and interfering gamma radiation on image quality. It is shown that, in the case of homogeneous materials, neutron radiography presents definite advantages for the inspection of heavier metals such as uranium, bismuth, and lead, and that the images obtained in such inspections are influenced very little by other radiation in the thermal-neutron beam. This is somewhat less true for intermediate metals such as steel and tungsten, although in these cases too, some exposure time advantage can usually be gained. Nevertheless, neutron radiographic inspection of these intermediate materials may be limited to those cases in which some complication, such as radioactivity of the sample, is involved. Thermal-neutron inspection of hydrogenous materials having a thickness greater than about an inch is not recommended and may be useful primarily in special cases such as one in which the light material is in some combination with a heavier, x-ray absorbing material. Text, Figures, and Examples for the Refresher Course ''Practical Statistics for the Health Physicist'' (open access)

Text, Figures, and Examples for the Refresher Course ''Practical Statistics for the Health Physicist''

From eighteenth Health Physics Society meeting; Miami Beach, Florida, USA (17 Jun 1973). A refresher course to provide a practical approach to the use of statistical concepts in interpreting data related to problems of applied health physics is given. After a brief review of the theoretical probability distributions, emphasis is placed on counting statistics, in particular the concept of the standard deviation. In this category the following topics are covered: (1) calculation of the standard deviation, (2) propagation of errors (when two or more quantities are combined arithmetically or via a formula), (3) confidence limits, and (4) the null hypothesis. The following topics are also discussed. (1) Chi-Square in relation to checking the reliability of a counting instrument, (2) correction factors for deadtime losses, and (3) for the case of a decaying source. (auth)
