Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Photographic follow-up of OK-1105-7. Fullingim Flat in Mt. Pinchot Pasture. This area is principally hardland range site. Vegetation during the 1940's and early 1950's was dominated by short grasses. Buffalo is concentrated in this locality. Management adjustments, including changes in salt location and mesquite control, have resulted in range improvements shown on return of miscellaneous grasses and moderate use. Note scattered stand of vigorous little bluestem plants. Taken during annual Soil Conservation Service cooperative grazing use check. OK-1583-9.

Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

Photograph of Fullingim Flat in the Mount Pinchot pasture of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge. Eastern view from the trail. Note the boulder ridge site in the background. This was a heavily grazed area during the 1940s and early 1950s. Improved management including mesquite control, salt location and change in season of use, has resulted in a change from buffalo grass and many low order short grasses to an overstory—principally of silver bluestem gradually taking its place. Caption: "Scattered Remnants of the car-truck accident which injured three Texans late Wednesday are mixed with parts of the plane which was being carried on the semi-trailer truck. Wheels of the truck were ripped loose and Thursday still lay near the body of the plane. The accident occurred three miles south of wayne on U. S. 77.
