The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Marion Adams. Adams was drafted into the Army in July of 1941. He served in the 43rd Engineer Construction Battalion, building roads, hospitals and kitchens. In 1942 he traveled to Australia, where he helped build three airstrips. They traveled to Oro Bay, Papua New Guinea, building railroads and airstrips. Adams was also trained as a medic, serving in the First Aid station. He provides details of both work experiences in engineering and building and assisting the sick and injured. He recalls helping the many wounded in Manila, as well as delivering supplies to the prison camps. He was discharged in June of 1945.

Transcript of an oral interview with Joel Alderson and his wife Nila. He discusses going to boot camp in Texas, shipping off to France in early 1945 and working as an engineer, constructing bridges and demolishing German fortifications for the Army as it made it's way through Germany, blowing up Hilter's bunker in Salzburg, Austria and using bulldozers to cover piles of dead Jews the Germans left in the open (likely at Dachau). He ancedotes about meeting Eisenhower, carrying fuel up to Patton's limo when it ran out of gas, seeing Bob Hope, soldiers getting poisoned from confiscated alcohol, and getting met by his family and the town sheriff when he came home after the war.

Transcript of an oral inerview with Doctor Dayton L. Alverson. He was born in 1924 in the San Diego Naval Hospital. He joined the Navy and received training in radio interception. Went to Washington, DC where he volunteered for assignment to the Sino-American Cooperative Organization (SACO) as a Radioman First Class. Left Newport News in July 1944 and sailed to Bombay, India and took the train to Calcutta. He was flown on a DC-3 over "The Hump" and into Kunming, China. He volunteered for duty near Amoy Island, which was occupied by the Japanese and was flown to Zhangping and traveled to a small encampment 25 miles north of Amoy. He recounts his time intercepting Japanese code and sending it to Chungking and provides details about breaking the code. He next describes taking 38 days to travel 18,000 miles on foot, in sampans and on trucks to reach the camp. He describes the methods by which the Chinese moved the sampans up and down the rivers. He was then assigned to a group making a raid on a small island adjacent to Amoy. He traveled by sampan down the river to Shima, China in order to deliver two 50-caliber machine …

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Elmore Anglley. Anglley was drafted in the Navy in February of 1944. Beginning in June of 1944 he served as a machinist mate aboard USS LST-997. They completed several convoys to Italy. In August of 1944 they landed in Southern France. In July of 1945 they traveled to Guam, Saipan and Okinawa. They landed vehicles, equipment and soldiers for invasions. He provides some details of each of these invasions, their LST in general and their travels across the sea. Anglley was discharged in May of 1946.

This is a conversation between Naik Muhammad (a 42-year old male driver) and Muhammad Awaiz (a 32-year old male government servant) about Naik Muhammad's recent visit to Kashmir.

This is a poem by Muhammad Awaiz (a 32-year old male). In this poem he says that the whole world is like our home, we should live a happy life by co-operating with each other.

Recording of a personal narrative by Muhammad Awaiz (a 31-year old male) in which the speaker talks about the economic hardships he endured as a student up until high school. He then moved to a far off big city in search of a job. There, he acquired a government job which helped him improve his financial situation. In this light, he reiterates his resolve to provide his children better education and better opportunities.

This is a retelling of the story about seven brothers and their sister by Muhammad Awaiz (a 32-year old government servant) with Naik Muhammad (a 42-year old male) as the listener. In this story, the brothers get separated from their sister and the latter is searching for them. The sister finds her lost brothers in a forest but the brothers cannot recognise her and each one of them wants to marry her. When the sister lets them know that she was their sister, they drop the idea of marrying her.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Walter Autry. Autry joined the Navy in 1941. In 1944, he traveled to New Guinea, serving aboard as a cook. He later worked as a Machinist Mate and Chief Engineer aboard an LCI. He participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf and the Philippines Campaigns. Autry served with occupation forces in Tientsin, China. He returned to the US and was discharged in late 1945.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Louis Avant. Avant was 16 when the war began and joined the Navy a few years later. He was trained as an electrician, but ended up working as a machinist mate for the boat pool that served CINPAC at Hawaii and then Guam. Avant mentions boxing in several smoker events. He was a member of the boat crew that took Admiral Nimitz to the surrender ceremony.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Ken Babcock. Babcock served as a civilian flight instructor for two years employed by the Army Air Forces. He describes the training he provided and how he worked with his students. Babcock volunteer to join the Army Air Forces when the training program was discontinued. He became a flight officer and served as a ferry pilot and then was transferred to China where he flew with the 2nd Air Transport Squadron. Babcock describes transporting supplies and Chinese soldiers in his C-46. He also details a typical flight over the Hump. Babcock discusses the types of food that made up his diet and how they were instructed not to eat locally grown crops. He left the service in 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with L. B. Blackmon. He discusses his time in boot camp in San Diego, getting shipped to Pearl Harbor, his experiences during the attack and later training cadets in Corpus Christi.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an interview with Andrew Bofinger. Bofinger joined the Naval Reserves in October of 1941, and was called to active duty on 15 December 1941. He served as Boatswain’s Mate Second Class, and worked on the offshore patrol in sailing vessels searching for Japanese subs. In June of 1943 he received a direct commission as ensign, and was assigned as Skipper aboard the minesweeper, YMS-93. In early 1944 they traveled to Hawaii, then the Marshall Islands conducting patrols, search and rescue missions and maintenance sweeping. In March of 1945 they swept mines on the east coast of Okinawa and rescued crewman from the USS England (DE-635). Bofinger was discharged in February of 1946.

The National Museum of the Pacific War presents an oral interview with Vernon Bowen. Bowen quit school and joined the Navy in August 1944. After training, he went aboard the USS Franklin (CV-13) and served as messman and as a 40mm antiaircraft gun loader. He describes his experiences when the ship was bombed in March, 1945 and how he escaped from below decks. Bowen rode the ship back to New York. He was discharged in June, 1946.

Dharendra Basumatary is a businessman with a BA-level education who speaks Hindi and Assamese in addition to Boro, 48 years old at the time of recording. He describes how the Bur river is destroying their village. The Bur river (also called Nizla river) comes from the Bhutan hills and it passes through their village. Nizla river eroded most of the lands of his village. Recorded in Laokhriguri village, Deosri.

Phaguna Narzary is a businessman with a BA-level education who speaks Nepali, Bengali, Hindi, and Assamese in addition to Boro, 38 years old at the time of recording. He the suffering of life due to the devastation done by a flood. They have done everything to stop the flood, but the flood is increasing year by year. They have appealed to the government and hope that government will solve their problems. Recorded in Laokhriguri village, Deosri.

Donda Basumatary is a farmer who speaks Assamese in addition to Boro, 61 years old at the time of recording. He talks about the loss of his property due to the flood. He is worried about the future generation of his village as most of the cultivable land is converted into a desert. He believes that until and unless the government doesn't build protection on the river bank, they will keep suffering in the future too. Recorded in Laokhriguri village, Deosri.

Lachit Basumatary is a daily laborer who speaks Hindi and Assamese in addition to Boro, 31 years old at the time of recording. He describes how he saved fellow villagers during the time flood. He cultivated rice and jute crops, but flood water destroyed everything and didn't get anything. His house's walls also got damaged, and his house is now only 50 meters away from the river. Swmkhang Narzary is a daily laborer who speaks Hindi and Assamese in addition to Boro, 27 years old at the time of recording. He tells about the loss of his land. He says that the river is about to reach his village by eroding day by day, and that 50 houses of his village were damaged in recent floods. He tells that when it rains in Bhutan hills, a sudden flood comes into their village. Recorded in Laokhriguri village, Deosri.
