Analysis of fracture modes during extrusion and drawing of bimetal rods or wire. Analytical study of drawing and extrusion of superconducting filamentary wires: fracture problems and evaluation of temperature rise. Final report

Based on the upper-bound theorem in limit analysis, a theoretical model describing sound flow, core fracture, and sleeve fracture in bimetal rods and wire during extrusion and drawing was developed. The variables affecting core and sleeve fracture are: reduction in area, die geometry, friction, relative size and strength of the core, and applied surface tractions. Within the wide range of combinations of these process variables, only a small range permits co-extrusion and codrawing without fracture. Criteria for the prevention of core and sleeve fracture during co-extrusion and core fracture during co-drawing were developed and presented graphically in this study. The results were applied to the central burst problem during extrusion and drawing of homogeneous materials.

Evaluation of filter media for clarification of partially dissolved residues containing plutonium

A common process in the chemical industry employs the leaching of a desirable component from an insoluble substrate, followed by filtration to produce a clarified solution of the desirable component and a discardable residue. The work described here involved evaluating sintered metal filter media for separating dissolved plutonium from undissolved residues generated at various locations owned by the Department of Energy throughout the United States. The work was performed during a six-week assignment at the Savannah River Laboratory as part of a high school science enrichment program conducted in the summer of 1989. The leach step used included dissolving the plutonium-containing solids in a solution of nitric-hydrofluoric acid. To simulate the partial solubility of the actual plutonium-containing residues, a non-radioactive power plant flyash was used. 6 refs., 14 figs., 1 tab.

Hybrid reactors. [Fuel cycle]

The rationale for hybrid fusion-fission reactors is the production of fissile fuel for fission reactors. A new class of reactor, the fission-suppressed hybrid promises unusually good safety features as well as the ability to support 25 light-water reactors of the same nuclear power rating, or even more high-conversion-ratio reactors such as the heavy-water type. One 4000-MW nuclear hybrid can produce 7200 kg of /sup 233/U per year. To obtain good economics, injector efficiency times plasma gain (eta/sub i/Q) should be greater than 2, the wall load should be greater than 1 MW.m/sup -2/, and the hybrid should cost less than 6 times the cost of a light-water reactor. Introduction rates for the fission-suppressed hybrid are usually rapid.

Characteristics of the site significant to the prospect for geothermal development are described, including: physiography, demography, economy, and the goals and objectives of the citizens as they relate to geothermal development. The geothermal resource evaluation is described, including the depth to reservoir, production rates of existing water wells, water quality, and the resource temperature. Uses of the energy that seem appropriate to the situation both now and in the foreseeable future at Gabbs are described. The essential institutional requirements for geothermal energy development are discussed, including the financial, environmental, legal, and regulatory requirements. The main resource, engineering and institutional considerations involved in a geothermal district heating system for Gabbs are summarized.

Evaluation of the mouse micronucleus test as compared with the in vivo cytogenics test for mutagenicity of synthetic fuel materials. Topical report

This brief topical report, provides information on a comparison of the mouse micronucleus mutagenic test proposed by a DOE contractor (FMC) for coal derived chemicals; as compared with the in vivo cytogenic test. The latter procedure is repotedly preferred by EPA authorities connected with implementation of the toxic substances control act (TOSCA). This evaluation was performed at the request of Headquarters DOE program management staff. The mouse micronucleus test takes less time and costs approximately one-fourth that of the in vivo cytogenetic procedure. This topical report is written to the extent possible in non-technical language to present conclusions associated with the evaluation rather than a detailed scientific dissertation.

Pretreatment of Kapton-coated cable for epoxy adhesion

Preliminary testing of a new system for protecting bonded strain gages that will be attached to the MFTF magnets indicated falling electrical resistance to ground, attributed to the infiltration of moisture. The most likely infiltration route seemed to be along the Kapton lead cable, which has an outer surface of FEP fluorocarbon resin. Samples of the cable were pretreated with a fluorocarbon etchant, Tetra-Etch, for periods of 10, 25, and 40 s at room temperature, followed by rinsing with demineralized water. The treated ends were embedded in the proposed epoxy sealant, Hysol EA 934, a compound containing 70 wt % of asbestos. The tensile-shear stresses required to pull the wires out of these embedments were measured. Results show that the three levels of treatment are equally effective in raising the bond strength from 377 psi for the untreated cable to about twice that, 763 psi. The 40-s exposure to Tetra-Etch appears to have penetrated the 0.5-mil fluorocarbon coating and attacked the Kapton film and the conductor coatings inside it.

Head assembly for multiposition borehole extensometer

A head assembly for a borehole extensometer and an improved extensometer for measuring subsurface subsidence. A plurality of inflatable anchors provide discrete measurement points. A metering rod is fixed to each of the anchors which are displaced when subsidence occurs, thereby translating the attached rod. The head assembly includes a sprocket wheel rotatably mounted on a standpipe and engaged by a chain which is connected at one end to the metering rod and at the other end to a counterweight. A second sprocket wheel connected to the standpipe also engages the chain and drives a connected potentiometer. The head assembly converts the linear displacement of the metering rod to the rotary motion of the second sprocket wheel, which is measured by the potentiometer, producing a continuous electrical output.

Survey of thermal imaging technology and applications at the Savannah River Site

This memorandum is an introduction to thermal imaging systems and their use. Emission of infrared radiation from ideal and real materials is described, as are methods of detection in modern thermal imaging systems. Typical specifications and features of commercially available thermal imaging systems are described, and uses of thermal imaging are discussed. At the Savannah River Site (SRS), thermal imaging has been used extensively to measure the temperature of surface water that carries heat from the reactors to the Savannah River. Other uses at SRS have been surveying roof insulation and moisture, evaluating insulation of prototype glass melters at the TNX facility, and locating leaks in the Concentrate Transfer System. Future recommended programs include evaluating thermal imaging for general monitoring of plant facilities, especially electrical conduits, processes occurring at elevated temperature, and radioactive storage areas that generate significant amounts of waste heat. Research on the resistance weld techniques used in tritium reservoir handling (pinch welding and reclamation welding) may profit from high speed thermal image monitoring of heat generated during welding, and other Process Development activities may also benefit from high-speed thermal image monitoring. 12 refs., 1 fig.

The standard paraxial ray equation method for the design of electrodes for an electrostatically focused gun is extended to include relativistic effects and the effects of the beam's azimuthal magnetic field. Magnetic interactions in sup 119 Sn substituted for Cu in antiferromagnetic and superconducting lamellar cuprates

Moessbauer Spectroscopy (MS) studies of {sup 119}Sn were carried out in antiferromagnetic La{sub 2}(Cu{sub 0.99}Sn{sub 0.01})O{sub 4} (214) and in superconducting GdBa{sub 2}(Cu{sub 0.99}Sn{sub 0. 01}){sub 3}O{sub 7} (123). Non-magnetic Sn{sup 4+} substitutes for Cu if the right procedure for diffusing {sup 119}SnO{sub 2} in CuO is carried out. Studies performed in 214 show a large quadrupole splitting (QS) down to 120 K followed by an onset of a magnetic interaction reaching a saturation internal field of H{sub eff} = 8.7(5) KOe at T = 30 K. From the combined magnetic-quadrupole interaction the angle {theta} formed by q{sub zz} and H{sub eff}, the {eta}-parameter, and the sign of QS were deduced and information on the local spin structure is derived. Studies conducted with the 123 material (T{sub c} = 90 K) reveal a broad unsplit line at temperatures down to 60 K followed by an abrupt onset of a magnetic interaction corresponding to H{sub eff} (Sn) = 8.3 (7) KOe. The hyperfine field decreases with decreasing temperature reaching 6.0(1) KOe at 16 K. The onset of the magnetic interaction at the {sup 119}Sn nucleus is explained as due to a local depletion of holes following the Sn{sup 4+} doping and …

Magnetron co-sputtering system for coating ICF targets

Fabrication of Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) targets requires deposition of various types of coatings on microspheres. The mechanical strength, and surface finish of the coatings are of concern in ICF experiments. The tensile strength of coatings can be controlled through grain refinement, selective doping and alloy formation. We have constructed a magnetron co-sputtering system to produce variable density profile coatings with high tensile strength on microspheres. The preliminary data on the properties of a Au-Cu binary alloy system by SEM and STEM analysis is presented.

Progress in direct heat applications projects

The development of hydrothermal energy for direct heat applications is being aided by twenty-two demonstration projects that are funded on a cost-sharing basis by the US Department of Energy, Division of Geothermal Energy. These projects are designed to demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of the direct use of geothermal heat in the United States. Twelve of these projects are administered by the DOE-Idaho Operations Office with technical support from EG and G Idaho, Inc. Engineering and economic data for these projects are summarized in this paper. The data and experience being generated by these projects will be an important basis for future geothermal direct use projects.

Testing and evaluation of doubly impacted simulant-fueled Milliwatt Generator heat sources

As part of the Milliwatt Generator (MWG) Program, 12 simulant-fueled heat sources were fabricated double impact tested, and evaluated at Mound. Ten assemblies were tested at approx. 80 m/sec, and two were tested at approx. 105 m/sec. None of the strength members were breached; therefore, no fuel would have been released as a result of double impacts at the velocities and orientations tested at 450/sup 0/C. There was little difference in results for duplicate tests conducted approx. 80 and approx. 105 m/sec. Ten units contained liners that were embrittled prior to testing. This resulted in cracks in some of the liner that would not have occurred in normally fueled heat sources.

Pulse*Star Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactor: heat transfer loop and balance of plant considerations

A conceptual heat transfer loop and balance of plant design for the Pulse*Star Inertial Confinement Fusion Reactor has been investigated and results are presented. The Pulse*Star reaction vessel, a perforated steel bell jar approximately 11 m in diameter, is immersed in Li/sub 17/Pb/sub 83/ coolant which flows through the perforations and forms a 1.5 m thick plenum of droplets around an 8 m diameter inner chamber. The reactor and associated pumps, piping, and steam generators are contained within a 17 m diameter pool of Li/sub 17/Pb/sub 83/ coolant to minimize structural requirements and occupied space, resulting in reduced cost. Four parallel heat transfer loops with flow rates of 5.5 m/sup 3//s each are necessary to transfer 3300 MWt of power. The steam generator design was optimized by finding the most cost-effective combination of heat exchanger area and pumping power. Power balance calculations based on an improved electrical conversion efficiency revealed a net electrical output of 1260 MWe to the bus bar and a resulting net efficiency of 39%. Suggested balance-of-plant layouts are also presented.

Relationship between the DOE loan guaranty and California Environmental Quality Act environmental review processes

The US Department of Energy (DOE) is involved in numerous geothermal research, development, demonstration, and loan guaranty projects in the State of California. These projects often require the preparation of both an Environmental Impact Report (EIR), as required by California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and an Environmental Assessment (EA) or Impact Statement (EIS) as required under NEPA. DOE adoption or utilization of information contained in EIR's to meet that agency's NEPA requirements and thereby reduce duplication of effort is dependent on four critical issues: (1) the scope of the proposed action analyzed, (2) the completeness of treatment of environmental issues, (3) the level of DOE involvement in EIR preparation, and (4) the timing of DOE involvement in EIR preparation. At this time, several constraints prevent the integration of the DOE Loan Guaranty and CEQA environmental review and documentation processes. First, the time required to complete an EIR (up to 2 years in some cases) is not compatible with DOE's goal of processing loan guaranty applications within a 4 month period. Second, the CEQA process is usually initiated and completed prior to DOE's involvement in the project. Therefore, DOE often has no role in document preparation and must verify the content …

Recent US target-physics-related research in heavy-ion inertial fusion: target gains and constraints on accelerator design

Inertial-fusion targets were designed for use with heavy-ion accelerators as drivers in fusion energy power plants. In the interest of providing inputs for understanding the trade-offs among accelerator designs, an initial survey was carried out regarding target gain versus parameters of relevance. This was done in two stages, firstly target gain was related to the beam energy, power, focal radius, and ion range. Secondly, a more comprehensive discussion was made by posing target gain constraints on the beam-occupied phase-space volume of the linacs. This latter discussion had included some rather simplified models of accelerator final focus and beam transport in near-vacuum fusion reaction chambers. Some further analyses of the basic assumptions of this summary are also described.

This draft report was prepared as required by Task No. 2 of the US Department of Energy, Grant No. DE-FG07-89ID12850 Reverse Trade Mission to Acquaint International Representatives with US Power Plant and Drilling Technology'' (mission). As described in the grant proposal, this report covers the reactions of attendees toward US technology, its possible use in their countries, and an evaluation of the mission by the staff leaders. Note this is the draft report of one of two missions carried out under the same contract number. Because of the diversity of the mission subjects and the different attendees at each, a separate report for each mission has been prepared. This draft report has been sent to all mission attendees, specific persons in the US Department of Energy and Los Alamos National Lab., the California Energy Commission (CEC), and various other governmental agencies.
