The vertical wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics

"The vertical open-throat wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics is described in this report. The tunnel was built mainly for studying the spinning characteristics of airplane models, but may be used as well for the usual types of wind-tunnel tests. A special spinning balance is being developed to measure the desired forces and moments with the model simulating the spin of an airplane. Satisfactory air flow has been attained with a velocity that is uniform over the jet to within plus or minus 0.5 per cent" (p. 499).

Report presenting an investigation of the effects of several molding conditions on the physical properties of laminates prepared with Fiberglass 181 glass fabric and Bakelite XRS-81 unsaturated-polyester resin. The molding variables included pressure, temperature, and time during both precuring and curing operations. The laminates were tested for several physical properties including resin content, percentage of voids, specific gravity, and flexural strength on the diagonal, both wet and dry.

For high single-stage pressure ratios (>4) the problem of converting the high dynamic energy to useful pressure arises (reference 2). In addition, the high tip speeds and weight flows combine to create a difficult situation for the turbine designer."

NACA instrumentation has been installed in the Northrop X-4 airplane to obtain stability and control data during the Northrop conducted acceptance tests. The results o. the third flight of the X- ll. number 1 airplane are presented in this paper. The results of this flight showed that the directional stability as measured in steadily increasing sideslips was positive and high and that the lateral stability was positive.

Developments in the HLO Bearing Test Program Interim Report

The chemical processing industry relies heavily on the use of rotary pumps to move massive quantities of liquids. The rotating elements of these pumps, generally of the deep-well turbine type, are submerged in the solution being pumped. This singular factor sometimes imposes a severe limitation on the choice bearings because the liquids are frequently corrosive and have poor lubricity. At the Hanford Atomic Products Operation a further complication arises from the effects of radioactivity in the solutions being transferred. Radiation and temperature can and will cause physical damage to many substances, including certain potential bearing materials such as plastics. These factors, coupled with the economics of remote operation and maintenance, have lead to the need for a test program to screen and evaluate potential bearing and journal materials.

Performance of J33-A-27 Turbojet-Engine Compressor, III, Over-All Performance Characteristics of Modified Compressor with Water Injection at Design Equivalent Speed of 11,800 RPM

An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of water injection on the over-all performance of a modified J33-A-27 turbojet-engine compressor at the design equivalent speed of 11,800 rpm. The water-air ratio by weight was 0.05. With water injection the peak pressure ratio increased 9.0 per- cent, the maximum efficiency decreased 15 percent (actual numerical difference 0.12), and. the maximum total weight flow increased 9.3 percent.

Report presenting an investigation in a duct system with fully developed pipe flow to determine the effects of vortex generators on the performance of a diffuser with whirling inlet flow. Testing was made with three different inlet whirl angles and rectangular, noncambered airfoils that varied in chord, span, angle setting, number, and location. Results for the 20.6 degree inlet whirl angle, 15.2 degree inlet whirl angle, 0 degree inlet whirl angle, and effect of inlet whirl angle on diffuser performance are provided.
