Edward Castillo was born in Houston in 1948. He grew up in the Fifth Ward and the Northside neighborhoods. Castillo talks about his activism in the University of Houston Mexican American Youth Organization and the organization's efforts to recruit and retain Chicana/o students, to establish the Center for Mexican American Studies, and to create the UH Marcha por La Humanidad mural. He also talks about co-founding Centro Aztlán, a cooperative that is dedicated to providing educational and social services to the Latina/o community in Houston.

He moved to Amarillo to work in the local air force base and continued on in another federal government job until the early 1990s. Oral History Interview with Pearlene Martin on June 9, 2016.

Pearlene Martin was raised around Texas and obtained her Masters degree at West Texas State College. She began teaching in Plainview Texas in the 1950s and then moved to Amarillo with her husband. She taught in segregated and integrated schools. In 1980 she became the first women president of the Amarillo NAACP. Since retiring, he has continued her involvement in the community. Some of Martin’s accolades include receiving the 1977 Edward Henderson Award, one of YMCA’s highest awards; the 1992 Service Provider Merit Award given by the Women’s Coalition for Change; the 1993 Merit Mother award from the Texas Mothers Association; and the 1999 Woman of Distinction Award presented by the Texas Plains Girl Scout Council.

Uriegas talks about growing up in Uvalde, being run out of Uvalde as a young man, and finishing high school in Del Rio. He talks about how Anglos in Uvalde used to turn the gas off the "Mexican" side of town to preserve pressure for the Anglo side when the weather was cold. He talks about the constant pressure that discriminatory treatment has on an individual's psyche. He talks about MAYO in Uvalde and serving on Uvalde city council. The most interesting part of the interview is him talking about him running VISTA MMP.

Oral History Interview with Teresa Perez-Wiseley, June 9, 2016

Ms. Perez-Wiseley was raised in the west side of Corpus Christi. She witnessed some acts of racial and class discrimination, but was not directly subjected to it during her youth. While she was very involved in community and student affairs, she did not become involved in the Chicano movement until she attended UT in the early 70s. After being excluded from leadership position in the Young Democrats, she joined the Raza Unida Party and was a member of MAYO at UT. After college, she worked for the city of Austin and became heavily involved in American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (ASCFME), eventually becoming a full-time organizer. During the interview, Ms. Perez-Wiseley discusses race relations in Corpus Christi, her career in labor organizing (including her own struggles against inequities in pay within ASCFME) and her current involvement in politics.

Pablo Avila, former Zavala County Judge, is one of the elected public officials that came to power through the Raza Unida Party. Avila was born and raised in Crystal City in a middle class family. He described his family's interest in politics and his account of public life and the relationships between Anglos and Mexican Americans. His family --his mother especially-- were very invested in national and local politics. After going to college and becoming an attorney, Avila returned to Crystal City and became involved in the local government. Eventually, he ran unopposed for Zavala County Judge and stayed in the post until his retirement in the 1990s.

Oral History Interview with Alford Littleton, July 9, 2016

Alford Littleton was born in Corvell County, Texas. His family briefly moved to California then returned to Texas when moving to Odessa during the 1950s. Littleton attended segregated schools while in Odessa and graduated valedictorian from Blackshear High School. Littleton attended the University of Texas at Austin for two years, but he returned to Odessa to work and raise a family. In Odessa, Littleton became the first African American to work within Shell’s refinery lab. He later started his own engineering testing company in Dallas, Texas—the first such company in Dallas owned by an African American.
