This report gives progress made on the following milestones: demonstrate Ti and Nb monitoring at 3M site, demonstrate Al monitoring at LLNL, complete baseline melt and vapor plume model for the metal matrix process (3M fiber coating process), prototype a laser at LLNL to monitor Cu, ZrO{sub 2} monitoring demonstration at LLNL, Se monitoring demonstration, and process scale-up study for YBCO high-temperature superconductor.

The affect of copper promotion on the activity and selectivity of hydrogen pretreated, precipitated iron Fischer-Tropsch catalysts was studied. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis was carried out in the slurry phase in one in one liter continuous stirred tank reactors at a space velocity of 3.lNL h{sup {minus}1} g{sup {minus}1}(Fe), H{sub 2}:CO = 0.7 at either 270{degree}C or 230{degree}C. Catalysts with atomic compositions relative to iron of 10OFe/4.4Si/l.OK and 10OFe/4.4Si/2.6Cu/l.OK were used at 270{degree}C and catalysts with the compositions of 100Fe/4.4Si/4.2K and 10OFe/4.4Si/2.6Cu/4.2K were used at 230{degree}C. XRD and Moessbauer spectroscopy both show that the 10OFe/4.4Si/2.6Cu/l.OK catalyst contained approximately 24% {alpha}-Fe with the remainder Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4} after a 24 h pretreatment with hydrogen at 220{degree}C. Copper promotion was found to substantially increase the activity and productivity of the catalysts. Catalysts promoted with copper reached maximum activity within 100 h of synthesis while catalysts with no copper went through an induction period. The activity of the hydrogen pretreated 10OFe/4.4Si/2.6Cu/1.0K catalyst operated at 270{degree}C was comparable to the activity of the the 100Fe/4.4Si/l.OK catalyst after pretreatment with carbon monoxide or syngas at one atmosphere pressure. Research was performed to develop an importance sampling procedure for a radiation source. The procedure was developed for the MCNP radiation transport code, but the approach itself is general and can be adapted to other Monte Carlo codes. The procedure, as adapted to MCNP, relies entirely on existing MCNP capabilities. It has been tested for very complex descriptions of a general source, in the context of the design of spent-reactor-fuel storage casks. Dramatic improvements in calculation efficiency have been observed in some test cases. In addition, the procedure has been found to provide an acceleration to acceptable convergence, as well as the benefit of quickly identifying user specified variance-reduction in the transport that effects unstable convergence.

Smoothing by spectral dispersion (SSD) with standard frequency modulation (FM), although simple to implement, has the disadvantage that low spatial frequencies present in the spectrum of the target illumination are not smoothed as effectively as with a more general smoothing method (eg, induced spatial incoherence method). The reduced smoothing performance of standard FM-SSD can result in spectral power of the speckle noise at these low spatial frequencies as much as one order of magnitude larger than that achieved with a more general method. In fact, at small integration times FM-SSD has no smoothing effect at all for a broad band of low spatial frequencies. This effect may have important implications for both direct and indirect drive ICF.

After adoption, these rulemaking actions are codified into the Texas Administrative Code.

The performance of insertion devices would achieve almost the ultimate level if a proper set of techniques could be developed to correct the magnetic field imperfections. It has been shown experimentally that the measured radiation characteristics of a magnetically fine-tuned insertion device are very close to those calculated for an ideal device. There are different techniques for correction of magnetic field errors. One used most often is a shimming technique capable of correcting both integrated and local field errors. In this note, some specific results of a shimming technique applied to APS insertion devices will be presented. This technique uses two types of shims: one for trajectory corrections and one for phase corrections. It has been demonstrated that trajectory shims could bring the rms phase errors to the level of 5 degrees, and the next shimming step when only phase shims are applied brings the rms phase errors as low as 1.5 degree.

Wiggins writes that Dallas ISD will be unable to continue their participation in the extension of the Getty grant for the 1995-1996 school years, due to time consideration and budgeting. However, there might be a possibility for participation for the 1997-1998 school year if they're able to pick up DISD's school funding needs. Wiggins concludes, saying how much she enjoyed her involvement with the NTIEVA consortium and to let them know of any opportunities to work with North Texas and the Getty Foundation again.
