Critical mass control: Continuous neptunium (open access)

Critical mass control: Continuous neptunium

During April 1962, equipment in both the main Redox Building (202-S) and the Plutonium Concentration Building (233-S) vas rearranged to allow the accumulation and recovery of neptunium without interference with the production of uranium and plutonium. In order to do this, the former rework column (1S) was put into continuous service as a neptunium recovery column, the Third Plutonium Cycle was converted to a neptunium decontamination cycle, and ion-exchange equipment was installed in the 233-S Building to replace the Third Plutonium Cycle. The neptunium, once decontaminated, will be concentrated and loaded out via its own system in the 233-S Building. To check the critical mass safety of the new arrangement, a formal hazards review was made, the results of which are reported in this document.

The Mass Spectra of the α-Amino Acids (open access)

The Mass Spectra of the α-Amino Acids

From abstract: "The mass spectra of the α-amino acids have been obtained in a mass spectrometer equipped with a heated crucible ion source. Correlations of these data have been made with the molecular formulae of the ion fragments, and mechanisms leading to these fragments are proposed. Comparisons of these data have been made with the mass spectra of the ethyl esters of the amino acids and with other carboxylic acids and their esters."

Production test IP-477-A, irradiation of N Reactor fuel elements in KER Loops 3 and 4 (open access)

Production test IP-477-A, irradiation of N Reactor fuel elements in KER Loops 3 and 4

The objective of this production test is to evaluate the irradiation behavior of N Reactor fuel elements at conditions equivalent to or more severe than those expected in N Reactor. N Reactor fuel elements are authorized for irradiation in KER Loops 3 and 4 to exposures no greater than 3000 MWD/T. Tubular steel spacers, per steel spacers, solid steel dummies, and a flow channel temperature measuring thermocouple train are authorized for use in KER loops 3 and 4 to permit positioning the fuel element charge in the process tube, controlling pressure drop across the process tube when using short fuel charges, and measuring the coolant temperature unbalance in the different fuel element flow channels.

Pion Resonances in π⁻-p Interactions at 4.65 Bev/c (open access)

Pion Resonances in π⁻-p Interactions at 4.65 Bev/c

This note describes some results of the study of single pion production in π⁻-p interactions at 4.65 Bev/c, using the BNL 20" Hydrogen Bubble Chamber. It is well known that the observability of some of the particle resonances (e.g. 33 Isobar and η) varies markedly with the energy of the incident particle. The ρ meson has been observed in π⁻-p interactions at 1.25 Bev/c and 1.9 Bev/c incident pion energies. Evidence will be shown that this resonance persists with the much higher incident pion energy used in the present experiment.

Ground Water Test Well D, Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada

Introduction: The U.S. Geological Survey is appraising the possibility, however slight, that the ground water beneath the Nevada Test Site, possibly contaminated by nuclear detonations, may carry radioactive fission products to places where they may constitute a public hazard.
