Identification and Crystal Structure of Barium Hydrogen Phosphate

From abstract: "The report describes the complete structure of barium hydrogen phosphate, Ba HPO4, as determined by means of x-ray diffraction. The crystal is orthorhombic, with cell dimensions given by a=5.71 A b=7.05 A c=4.61 A. The calculated density is 4.15gm/cm[^]3 for two molecules in the unit cell. The space group is C[subscript]2v[superscript]7-pmn. The barium, phosphorus, and two sets of oxygen lie in the plane of symmetry. The third set of oxygens are in general positions. Parameters for these atoms have been found, and interatomic distances calculated. The positions of the hydrogens are indicated by the characteristics O-H-O distance (2.58A) between two oxygens."

Progress Report : Low Geometry Alpha Particle Ionization Chambers

ABSTRACT. When solutions of high specific alpha activity are to be assayed for product, it is often difficult to obtain reproducible results by diluting the solution sufficiently to remove a small volume from which a sample can be prepared and counted at 52% geometry. In order to assay such a solution, most reproducible results have been obtained with minimum effort in sample preparation by making use of low geometry chambers. Two types of low geometry chambers are described: 1) The air-screen type which reduces the geometry simply by placing screens of various transparencies above the sample; and 2) The vacuum low geometry chamber which accomplishes geometry reduction by increasing the distance between sample and collecting electrode thus decreasing the solid angle subtended by the sample and aperture through which the particles pass into the ionization chamber. This type chamber was developed concurrently by this group and the instrument group of Chemistry Section C-I at the Metallurgical Laboratory. Because the geometry of the air-screen type chamber is quite critical to sample spreading and be- cause 12 mm sample plates are required, it has found very little use. The Metal-Dielectric Junction of High-Voltage Insulators in Vacuum and Magnetic Field

From introduction: "This study is concerned with the shape of the electrodes of high-voltage insulator and with the method of joining them to the dielectric. The study is limited to insulators operating in vacuum, with special interest in the cases where strong magnetic fields are present. It is further limited to insulators with the high-voltage electrodes maintained at negative potential. The object of the study was to obtain information that would aid in improving the design of the insulators in two respects. First, to decrease to a minimum the number of charged particles set free which may directly or indirectly cause early failure of the insulator. Second, to increase the voltages at which partial or complete flashovers occur. Therefore, experiments were made to determine the principal phenomenon which have as their primary source the insulator under high electrical stress in vacuum."

The Effect of Age on the Radiosensitivity of Mice

Abstract: Mice of different ages ranging from 1.5 to 12 months have been exposed to gamma rays in an effort to determine the change in radiosensitivity with age. The dose necessary to cause 50% killing was determined for each age group and sex. No change in sensitivity with age was observed with either sex, although the experimental error in the case of the males was quite large. The females were found to be more resistant than the males.

The Toxicity and Metabolism of Plutonium in Laboratory Animals

Introduction. The main objective of the Metallurgical Project was the preparation of large quantities of plutonium 239, an isotope of element 94, by the interaction of neutrons and uranium. At the beginning, only predictions of its chemical and biological properties could be made since it is a new element. It was predicted that it would be toxic to tissue by virtue of its high atomic weight, and in addition, that it would be toxic by virtue of its radioactivity. Thus, the preparation and use of the element on a large scale meant the manipulation of, and possible exposure to, toxic quantities. It was, therefore, of practical importance to obtain data which would elaborate on the predicted toxicity. The objectives of the work reported here were to establish the acute toxicity of plutonium in experimental animals and to study the distribution of the element in the body after the administration of a wide range of doses. In the interest of economy of what was, at that time, a rare substance, and of animals and facilities, these two objectives were frequently pursued in the same experiment. The information obtained from the separate experiments is therefore frequently incomplete in one or another respect. …

Beta Magnet Current Stability

Abstract: A TEC regulator amplifier driving an Eaterline-Angus recording meter was used to record magnet current variations. Tests were made to determine magnet current variations. Tests were made to determine magnet current stability for currents from 500 amperes to 4000 amperes. Changes were necessary in both the TEC and GE regulators before currents below 2500 amperes could be regulated. Regulation to 0.025 percent for and hour was obtained for currents of 1000 to 4000 amperes with the TEC and GE regulators, and regulation to 0.05 percent for 500 ampere currents.

Methyl Methacrylate Casting Resin

Abstract: "This report describes work done to improve the casting characteristics of methyl methacrylete resin under CMR-6-18 authorization. The experimental program was initiated with the objectives of decreasing casting time, bubble formation and shrinkage. It has been found that by use of a common solvent for monomer and polymer concentration in monomer can be attained greater than any previously reported in preparation of a methacrylate casting resign. Incorporation of this greater amount of polymer has produced the desired effects. A bibliography of relevant literature is included to which reference is made in the text."

Abstract: An investigation was conducted to determine the absorption and translocation of fission products by Russian thistle from a localized spot of contaminated soil. The amount and identity of the radioactive elements absorbed and translocated by the Russian thistle is given along with the location of these elements in the plants. Beta radioactivity to the amounts of 10 microcuries per gram caused no visible effects on the growth habits of sectioned material are included.

Oralloy Shape Factor Measurements

Measurements have been at the Pajarito remote control laboratory to determine the effect of change of shape on system reactivity for oralloy cylinders. Systems tested include cylindrical configurations with various height-to-diameter ratios ranging from slabs to rods. Each system reactivity is referred to that of a sphere in the same tamper. Reactivity tests were made on bare (untamped) Oy configurations, as well as on systems In tuballoy tampers 1.12,1.87,and 8.0 thick. The amount of reactivity change associated with a particular cylinder height-to-diameter ratio is feud to be a function of tamper thickness, and is greatest for very thin tampers.

The Reaction of Tritium and Stopcock Grease

This investigation was begun as a result of a mass spectrometric measurement of two samples of tritium which had been stored for several months in Pyrex glass bulbs using stopcocks. The first of these was originally supposed to be of extremely high isotopic and chemical purity. What was observed at this time was 1.45 H had accumulated, and that tritiated methane, CT4, was also present to the extent of 0.18%. A consistent attempt had been made in this sample to protect the gas from contact with the grease by covering the stopcock with mercury. the second sample was a composite of T2 samples of various degrees of enrichment with an isotopic analysis of 92% T. No protection had been attempted during its storage, and 0.86% CT4 to be present.
