Hanford Engineer Works monthly report, July 1944 (open access)

Hanford Engineer Works monthly report, July 1944

This progress report discusses activities at Hanford Engineer Works for the month of July, 1944. The organization size increased rapidly in July, jumping from 1384 to 1886, an increase of 502 employees. Shortages existed on special lines such as electricians, instrument mechanics, and power operators. The opportunities to interview and employ Construction personnel improved as the Construction, organization moved past its peak employment figure. 269 houses were completed in Richland and 370 occupancies were reported, reducing the backlog of empty houses due to slow furniture movements. A total of 1530 houses or 35.6% of the village is now occupied. The overall canning yield increased from 63% to 75% while production leveled off at approximately two-thirds of design capacity. The metal machining operation and the test pile operated on a one shift-six day per week basis. The portion of the 100-B Area from the pump house through the filter plant and including the Power House was taken over by Operations on July 25. The Power House in the 200-W Area was started and flushing of process lines with water and steam got under way in the canyon. A new department was formed to control the Protection activities of the plant.

Fission product studies with plant dissolver solutions: IX-Iodine, X-Arsenic. SE-PC No. 61 (open access)

Fission product studies with plant dissolver solutions: IX-Iodine, X-Arsenic. SE-PC No. 61

In continuing studies to characterize and identify fission product activities formed in the piles and appearing in plant dissolver solutions work was done to determine whether or not long-lived isotopes of certain elements were present. Two of the elements in this category were iodine and arsenic. The iodine isotope of particular interest was I{sup 129}. Its tellurium parent has been identified but no daughter activity attributable to iodine has been observed. The arsenic activities of interest were the long-lived isotopes (16 days and 90 days) which have been produced artificially by several different nuclear reactions.

100 Areas, January 29 through February 4, 1946 (open access)

100 Areas, January 29 through February 4, 1946

The B Pile operated 25 MW below rated power level without interruption during the week. The D Pile was shut down on January 29. During the shutdown 103 tubes were discharged. The shut down lasted for 15 hours. During operation after the shut down power was reduced to meet graphite temperature restrictions. The F Pile was run steadily throughout the week at 25 MW below rated level. Iron content in the process water averaged 0.015, 0.011 and 0.010 ppm at B, D, and F Areas, respectively. Examination of the slugs discharged from four corrosion tubes at F has been completed. A summary of conditions found in the vertical and horizontal aluminium thimbles at D and F during a recent inspection are given. Results are given on the graphite expansion problem.

Production test 105-2-P (Supplement A) - Activity of pile discharge water (Activation of manganese and iron) (open access)

Production test 105-2-P (Supplement A) - Activity of pile discharge water (Activation of manganese and iron)

This report discusses the Production Test 105-2-P (Supplement A) -- Activity of Pile Discharge Water. Previous studies of pile discharge water have shown that one of two processes is responsible for the large but variable amount of Mn{sup 56} activity present in the water. One process is the production of Mn{sup 56} by the reaction Mn{sup 55} on manganese impurity in the water. The amount of such impurity has been shown to be too small to produce the observed amount of Mn{sup 56} unless the mean irradiation time is increased by a large factor due to temporary sticking of manganese on the surfaces in the tubes. The other process is the production by the reaction Fe{sup 56} on iron in the film. The present production test was designed to determine which of these processes is responsible for the troublesome Mn{sup 56} activity and to what extent the activity is increased due to sticking of manganese or iron in the tubes. 4 figs.

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis (open access)

The Path of Carbon in Photosynthesis

The dark fixation of carbon dioxide by green algae has been investigated and found to be closely related to photosynthesis fixation. By illumination in the absence of carbon dioxide followed by treatment with radioactive carbon dioxide in the dark, the amount fixed has been increased ten to twenty fold. This rate of maximum fixation approaches photosynthesis maximum rates. The majority of the radioactive products formed under these conditions have been identified and isolated and the distribution of labeled carbon determined. From these results a tentative scheme for the mechanism of photosynthesis is set forth.

Production of Ta{sup 182} (open access)

Production of Ta{sup 182}

This memorandum discusses briefly and approximately the two extreme programs which could be followed in the production of Ta{sup 182}: the use of present available excess reactivity, and the use of a pile, continuing no U{sup 238}, expressly to produce Ta{sup 182}. Use of lesser amounts of enriched material would achieve lesser production rates. The cost in fissionable material per gram of active isotope would remain approximately the same.

Start-up of the 100-B pile following 1569-B tube failure

Tube 1569-B ruptured on September 22, 1948 and was replaced. Between the time of failure and final isolation of this tube, considerable water escaped into the graphite packing. As a result, the unit start-up and subsequent operation was quite different from that usually followed. This report has been prepared to summarize the observations and activities related to this operation.

Four in. three jaw type connector suitable for vertical mounting sample for job 11

As authorized by purchase order No. 11-2532 dated March 11, 1949 of the Kellex Corp., the first sample of a 4 inch three jaw type connector for Job 11 was fabricated. The design of the connector was per Crane Co. drawing DR-25126-D except vertical mounting. The materials were per Crane Co. drawing A-24491-C. As instructed in verbal conversation with Dr. D.D. Jacobus and as requested in Mr. J.J. Cuniffe`s letter of May 6, 1949, and Ingersoll-Rand Company`s 1 1/4 inch 534 impact wrench with suitable socket to fit the hexagon head of the operating screw of the 4 inch connector was procured on loan to make some preliminary tests. Engineering drawings are listed in a second report on the data base.
