Report presenting an investigation at transonic speeds of the control balancing characteristics of three tabs on a full-span flap on an aspect-ratio-3, 45 degree sweptback wing. The results indicated that all the tabs tested, inset, attached, or detached, would balance the flap hinge moments throughout the speed range.

The boiling points, densities, refractive indices, and freezing points were determined and presented with a survey of literature values.

Report presenting tests using the NACA wing-flow method at a range of Mach numbers to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of four triangular-wing-fuselage models. Measurements of the normal force, chord force, and pitching moment for various angles of attack. Two models had wings of aspect ratio 2.31, one with an NACA 65-009 airfoil section and one with a 9-percent-thick biconvex section, and two with wings of aspect ratio 4, one with an NACA 65-006 airfoil and one with a 6-percent-thick double-wedge airfoil.

Investigation of effects of additives on storage properties of fuming nitric acids

Report presenting a study of the storage properties of fuming nitric acids, with and without additives, at 170 degrees F in closed containers of aluminum bodies and steel caps. The effects on the storage properties indicated that the potassium fluoride dihydrate is most effective in reducing the rate of pressure rise and reducing corrosion on aluminum and stainless steel surfaces.

Investigation of a Pulse-Jet-Powered Helicopter Rotor on the Langley Helicopter Test Tower

Report discussing testing of a helicopter rotor powered by pulse-jet engines located at the rotor-blade tips. The basic hovering characteristics of the rotor and propulsive characteristics of the pulse-jet engine were obtained at a range of engine speeds with the engines rigidly fixed to the blade tips and with the engines free to pivot. Measurements were also taken to determine the effect of inlet blockage on the power-off drag of the jet engines and the noise intensity in the vicinity of operating engines.

Flight Studies of the Horizontal-Tail Loads Experienced by a Fighter Airplane in Abrupt Maneuvers

Field measurements were made on a fighter airplane to determine the approximate magnitude of the horizontal tail loads in accelerated flight. In these flight measurements, pressures at a few points were used as an index of the tail loads by correlating these pressures with complete pressure-distribution data obtained in the NACA full-scale tunnel. In addition, strain gages and motion pictures of tail deflections were used to explore the general nature and order of magnitude of fluctuating tail loads in accelerated stalls.

From Summary: "A summary has been made of the available experimental data on division of normal-force loads between the wing and fuselage of aircraft. Comparison of the experimental values with theoretical calculations which include interference effects shows good agreement in general with the greatest differences occurring near a Mach number of 1.0. At high angles of attack, above the range of linear lift curves, the proportion of the total wing-fuselage load carried by the wing decreases and this effect occurs throughout the subsonic- and transonic-speed region."

From Introduction: "The rolling-pullout maneuver (any maneuver in which rolls occur during high g flight conditions) has been shown to be pertinent to design considerations from the standpoint of the loads produced on a vertical tail (refs. 1 to 3). In order to understand this problem better, the results of an analytical study of effects of large variations of some of the lateral-stability-derivative coefficients on the maximum angle of sideslip at first peak of its oscillation are presented in this paper. Also, expressions for estimating the effects of small variations of or errors in these coefficients on the maximum sideslip angle have been developed and are presented. "

Memorandum presenting testing of a D-558-II airplane with the wing slats fully extended, with and without inboard wing fences, and with the wing slats half extended and wing fences removed. In order to improve the stick-force characteristics at moderate and large angles of attack, additional tests were conducted with two bungees of differing stiffness alternately attached to the control column.
