Methyl Methacrylate Casting Resin (open access)

Methyl Methacrylate Casting Resin

Abstract: "This report describes work done to improve the casting characteristics of methyl methacrylete resin under CMR-6-18 authorization. The experimental program was initiated with the objectives of decreasing casting time, bubble formation and shrinkage. It has been found that by use of a common solvent for monomer and polymer concentration in monomer can be attained greater than any previously reported in preparation of a methacrylate casting resign. Incorporation of this greater amount of polymer has produced the desired effects. A bibliography of relevant literature is included to which reference is made in the text."

The Statistics of the Hypocritical Water Boiler (open access)

The Statistics of the Hypocritical Water Boiler

From introductory paragraph: "In a slightly hypocritical water boiler the introduction of a single neutron may give rise to a fairly large burst of neutrons which dies out slowly. As was shown some time ago by Frankel and Nelson with the help of A. Horn the statistics of this multiplication process can be treated in a simple way for the hypothetical case that the number of neutrons produced per fission is two."

On the Transfer of Heat to Fluids Flowing Through Pipes, Annuli, and Parallel Plates (open access)

On the Transfer of Heat to Fluids Flowing Through Pipes, Annuli, and Parallel Plates

Nusselt numbers have been calculated for heat transfer to fluids flowing through annuli under conditions of uniform heat flux and fully established velocity and temperature profiles. The following cases were considered: (a) laminar flow, (b) slug flow, (c) turbulent flow with molecular conduction only, and (d) turbulent flow with both molecular and eddy conduction. These Nusselt numbers were determined for two conditions: heat transfer from the inner wall only and heat transfer from the outer wall only. The results were correlated by semi-empirical equations. The final results obtained on cases (a), (b), and (c) are applicable to any fluid, whereas those obtained on (d) are for liquid metals only. Wall- and bulk-temperature relationships for the above four cases were also determined. These relationships were treated as dimensionless temperature ratios. Both the Nusselt numbers and temperature ratios were evaluated over the r1/r2 range, zero to unity; the former being the case of the circular pipe, and the latter, the case of infinite parallel plates.

HRT Source Shield Calculations (open access)

HRT Source Shield Calculations

Calculations indicate that the proposed shielding arrangement will give a dose rate at the surface of the water tank of about 100 mrem per hr., practically all gammas. This is adequate for transportation and handling, but if the radiation actually proves to be this high, a storage location isolated from normal working areas must be provided. The isolation area need not be large, however, since the calculated dose rate at 10 feet from the shielded sources is only 3.5 mrem pr hr. For the short time required to transfer the source from the water tank into the reactor the Pb carrier alone will provide sufficient shielding. At one meter from the source shielded by the Pb carrier, the dose rate is estimated to be 170 mrem per hr., with neutrons contributing he major part. With reasonable care, the operations should be carried out without excessive exposures. The results of the calculations are summarized.
