"Results are presented of an investigation to determine the pressure distributions on a wing with leading-edge sweepback decreasing from 45 degrees at the root to 20 degrees at the tip, an aspect ratio of 4.12, taper ratio of 0.36, and NACA 64A009 airfoil section. Tests were conducted at a Reynolds number of 3.5 x 10(exp 6) and a Mach number of 0.07 on the wing with and without 0.20 chord and 0.65 span split flaps deflected 60 degrees. These pressure distributions are analysed herein to determine the character of flow and its effect on the stability of the wing" (p. 1).

"An investigation was made at the Langley landing-loads track to obtain data on the coefficient of friction during wheel spin-up. A landing gear was tested at horizontal velocities ranging from 0 to 180 feet per second together with vertical velocities of 7.0 and 9.3 feet per second. The results indicate the effect of forward speed and tire inflation pressure on the coefficient of friction" (p. 1).

Report presenting an investigation in the free-flight tunnel to determine the dynamic lateral stability and control characteristics of a high-aspect-ratio bomber model with self-supporting, free-floating fuel tanks attached to the wing tips. The results showed that the flight behavior of the configuration could be made satisfactory when sufficient restoring moment was supplied. Results regarding the flight behavior, rolling motions, motions of the bomber and attached tanks, and flight records for different gearing ratios are provided.

Studies on Large Area Sub-Fabric Burns. The Effect of (1) Reflectance and Separation of Fabric, and (2) Treatment With Fire-Retardant Material

A series of cutaneous burns was produced on swine by exploding 150 mgm of magnesium powder at distances of 20 and 25 cm from the animal. This provided 20 cal/cm/sup 2/ at exposure times of 0.7 and 2 to 3 sec and 16 cal/cm/sup 2/ at an exposure time of 0.7 sec respectively. The effect of placing green and khaki poplin fabrics untreated and treated with fire-retardant material L-S 123P, in contact with and separated 5 and 10 mm from skin was studied. Burns were evaluated both by surface appearance and by microscopic examination. All the fabrics reduced the severity of the burns. As the amount of separation increased, the severity of the burns decreased if the fabric remained intact. The knaki fabric with its higher reflectance gave more protection than the green fabric at 16 cal/cm/sup 2/ at 0.7 sec exposure time and 20 cal/cm/sup 2/ at 2 to 3 sec exposure time, but not at 20 cal/cm/sup 2/ at 0.7 sec exposure. The fire- retardant treated material gave more protection than the untreated material if it persisted longer during the exposure. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Research Reactor Safeguard Report

The proposed ORNL Research Reactor is designed to serve as a general purpose research tool delivering a maximum thermal flux of 8x10^13 n/cm2-sec at the initial power level of five megawatts. Operation at power levels up to ten megawatts is proposed for such items as sufficient cooling capacity is available to handle the increased heat load. The reactor will use MTR-type fuel elements and beryllium reflector pieces in a 7 x 9 grid with moderation and cooling provided by forced circulation of demineralized water. The reactor tanks are submerged in a barytes concrete pool, filled with water, which serves as a biological shield. Experimental facilities include two 18" diameter "Engineering Test Facilities" and six 6" diameter beam holes. In addition, access to the core is available through the water of the pool. The result on the surrounding population of release to the atmosphere of a large fraction of the radioactive material in the core has been computed by two methods. It is shown that under certain conditions off-area personnel could be subjected to greater than the maximum permissible exposure. From Summary: "The results of force tests made at low speed are presented to show the effect of longitudinal static stability produced by drooping the tip of a 63 degree sweptback wing. Five semispan wing models were tested: two incorporated curved drooped tips, two with abruptly drooped tips, and one without droop. The most favorable stability characteristics were measured for a model with an abruptly drooped tip, a fence, and a leading-edge flap; however, the use of these same auxiliary devices on the undrooped wing was nearly as effective."

Increased pumping capacity at 181-C scope and justification

The purpose of this report is to provide scope and justification for the installation of two new 16,500 gpm, 150-foot head pumps in the 181-C building in order to furnish sufficient additional water to increase production at 105-B and to supply the entire normal export demand from B Area. A minimum of 11,000 gpm will be required to be transferred from the 183-C reservoir to the 183-B clearwell via the cross-tie line during the adverse turbidity period when the I&E program is in effect at 105-B. It is contemplated to transfer 15,000 to 20,000 gpm so as to provide the necessary water for this increased flow at 105-B and to reduce the flow through the existing 183-B filters. It is apparent that the pumping capacity at 181-C is not adequate to supply this extra water at 183-C unless all export pumps are used to pump water to 183-C. If this increased demand were met by using the export pumps, the 100-D Area would have to supply most of the export demand to the 200 Areas which is anticipated to be 12,000 to 15,500 gpm. Angular Distribution of Fragments from Neutron-Induced Fission

The angular distribution of fission fragments from the neutron-induced fission of several isotopes has been studied. Distributions were observed for thermal neutrons on U233 and U235, Lady Godiva leakage neutrons on U235 and U238, and 14 Mev neutrons on U233, U235, U238, Th232, and Np237. No anisotropy was observed for thermal neutron fission, whereas for Lady Godiva neutrons and 14 Mev neutrons the probability of fission along the axis of the neutron beam was determined to be higher than for fission in the orthogonal direction. Experimental results are given on pages 10 and ll.
