Development of magnetic mirror systems for nuclear testing applications

Several system studies have concluded that the small size and steady state nature of magnetic mirror systems provide attractive features for nuclear-testing applications. The principle shortcoming of mirror systems is their small data base relative to that of tokamaks. This paper summarizes the present data base and describes experiments that could be carried out with small modifications of existing facilities to explore plasma physics issues associated with the production of high neutron fluxes in magnetic mirror configurations. The experiments would demonstrate physics principles important to such future applications of fusion power neutrons as blanket testing, tritium production, fissile fuel production, or decontamination of high-level radioactive nuclear-reactor wastes.

Improved system for perpendicular electron-cyclotron emission measurements on TMX-Upgrade

Perpendicular electron-cyclotron emission (PECE) is used on TMX-U to diagnose thermal-barrier hot electrons (T/sub H/ approx. 100 to 400 keV); yielding the time history of the temperature of these relativistic electrons. We describe an improved quasi-optical viewing system for these measurements that uses high sensitivity superheterodyne receivers at fixed frequencies of 60, 98, 130, and 196 GHz. The improved viewing and transport system consists of an off-axis ellipsoidal mirror that images the plasma onto a V-band conical collection horn, an overmoded circular waveguide (7/8'' diam) that transports the radiation outside the vacuum vessel where the polarization is selected, and a high absorptivity Macor beam dump to prevent internal wall reflections from entering the viewing system. A relativistic code is used to calculate optically thin PECE signals from relativistic electrons for various energy and pitch angle distributions. 4 refs., 4 figs.

Surface characterization of an energetic material, pentaerythritoltetranitrate (PETN), having a thin coating achieved through a starved addition microencapsulation technique

The objective of this research was to: (1) determine the nature of a thin coating on an explosive material which was applied using a starved addition microencapsulation technique, (2) understand the coating/crystal bond, and (3) investigate the wettability/adhesion of plastic/solvent combinations using the coating process. The coating used in this work was a Firestone Plastic Company copolymer (FPC-461) of vinylchloride/trifluorochloroethylene in a 1.5/1.0 weight ratio. The energetic explosive examined was pentaerythritoltetranitrate (PETN). The coating process used was starved addition followed by a solvent evaporation technique. Surface analytical studies, completed for characterization of the coating process, show (1) evidence that the polymer coating is present, but not continuous, over the surface of PETN; (2) the average thickness of the polymer coating is between 16-32 A and greater than 44 A, respectively, for 0.5 and 20 wt % coated PETN; (3) no changes in surface chemistry of the polymer or the explosive material following microencapsulation; and (4) the presence of explosive material on the surface of 0.5 wt % FPC-461 coated explosives. 5 refs., 15 figs., 6 tabs.

The purpose of this research program is to investigate fluid dynamic instabilities and mixing initiated by the interaction of shock waves with interfaces between light and heavy gases. In particular, the nonlinear stage of shock-initiated Rayleigh-Taylor instability (also known as the Richtmeyer-Meshkov instability), the secondary instabilities (e.g., the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability) arising therefrom and the resulting mixing of the two gases are of interest. This report describes activities during the performance period 1 October 1985 to 30 September 1986.

Performance evaluation of the HEP, ELXSI and CRAY X-MP parallel processors on hydrocode test problems

Parallel programming promises improved processing speeds for hydrocodes, magnetohydrocodes, multiphase flow codes, thermal-hydraulics codes, wavecodes and other continuum dynamics codes. This paper presents the results of some investigations of parallel algorithms on three parallel processors: the CRAY X-MP, ELXSI and the HEP computers. Introduction and Background: We report the results of investigations of parallel algorithms for computational continuum dynamics. These programs (hydrocodes, wavecodes, etc.) produce simulations of the solutions to problems arising in the motion of continua: solid dynamics, liquid dynamics, gas dynamics, plasma dynamics, multiphase flow dynamics, thermal-hydraulic dynamics and multimaterial flow dynamics. This report restricts its scope to one-dimensional algorithms such as the von Neumann-Richtmyer (1950) scheme.

SPR-9 concept definition study: FY 1986 summary

This report summarizes the results of work undertaken to advance design of the SPR-9 MMW power reactor. Gas-cooled thermal reactors coupled with Brayton cycle power conversion appear feasible and have several attractive features for multi-megawatt space power systems. The high temperature capability of the reactor removes it as the limiting component on system performance. The low fuel inventories required make systems based on thermal reactors a lesser safeguard risk. However, an advanced radiator design must be developed to reduce system mass. (JDH)

Interfacing solvent extraction in the recovery of pyrochemical residues at the Savannah River Plant

The traditional feedstock for plutonium recovery at the Savannah River Plant (SRP) has been spent reactor fuel elements and irradiated targets. Feed sources have included both onsite reactors and a wide variety of domestic and foreign reactors. For the past few years, a growing and increasingly varied mix of unirradiated plutonium residues has been purified through SRP aqueous-based processes. Recently, plutonium residues generated in various chloride salt melts have become a significant offsite source of feed for SRP recovery operations. Impure plutonium metal and plutonium alloys have also been processed. A broader range of molten salt and other high temperature residues is anticipated for the future. The major advantage of solvent extraction for scrap purification is the versatility of the solvent extraction system which allows numerous contaminants to be removed by routine operations. Major concerns are nuclear safety control, corrosion of equipment, and control of releases to the environment. SRP's past, present, and future interfacing of solvent extraction in processing pyrochemical and other plutonium-containing residues is reviewed.

Theoretical and observational review of results on nova explosions occurring on ONeMg white dwarfs

The nova outburst is the second most violent explosion that occurs in a galaxy. This review presents the recent observational and theoretical studies that have demonstrated that there exist two classes of nova outburst. One type of nova occurs on a CO white dwarf and the other type of nova occurs on an ONeMg white dwarf. The second class of outbursts are much more violent and occur much more frequently then the first class of outbursts. Hydrodynamic simulations of both kinds of outbursts are in excellent agreement with the observations. 51 refs.

D-Zero Vacuum System

The system pumping speed was calculated by taking the reciprocal of the sum of the reciprocal pump speed and the reciprocal line conductances. The conductances of the pipe were calculated from the following formulas taken from the Varian vacuum manual. This report updates the original to reflect the pumping curves and basic vacuum system characteristics for the purchased components and installed piping of the D-Zero vacuum system. The system consists of two Edward's E2M275 two stage mechanical pumps, a Leybold-Heraeus WSU2000 Blower and three Varian 4' diffusion pumps (one for each cryostat). Individual pump and system pumping speed curves and a diagram of the system is included.

Stability of Coastin Beams in the Debuncher

The stability of high intensity beams has been a matter of some concern. While anti-proton operation uses beam currents of 10 a or less, it is sometimes useful to have proton beams with currents of the order of 1 ma and narrow (booster sized) momentum spreads. This note describes calculations of what can be expected for coasting beam instabilities and, in particular, the effect of the (high impedance) 53 MHz cavities. This note specifically does not describe transverse instabilities, bunched beam instabilities, or turbulence in the debunching process. The stability limit can be calculated using standard formulae (van der Meer CERN/PS/AA/80-4 and many others). The result of this calculation is the 'stability plot' shown in figure 1a. This calculation assumes a 1 ma beam with a {Delta}p ({sigma}) of 2 MeV/c. The curve (allowed impedance) scales inversely with beam current and {Delta}p{sup 2}. The momentum spread was assumed to be gaussian. Figures 1b and 1c are the same plot but with different scales. The interpretation of this plot is that if the impedance of any device (or devices) is outside this curve, then the assumed beam distribution is unstable. Spin Effects in High-P(T)^2 p+p --> p+p at 800 to 900 GeV

We propose to study the spin-orbit Analyzing Power, A, in p+p + p+p at large P{sub {perpendicular}}{sup 2}. We propose to run at Fermilab around Fall 1987 and scatter a high intensity unpolarized proton beam of 800 to 900 GeV from a Polarized Proton Target; we would measure the difference between the d{sigma}/dt when the target spin is up and when it is down. Our main goal is to see if the unexpected large values of A recently found at the 28 GeV AGS in proton-proton elastic scattering persist to Fermilab energies. The large A value of 24 {+-} 8% at P{sub {perpendicular}}{sup 2} = 6.5 (GeV/c){sup 2} was not only unexpected but also seems difficult to reconcile with the A = 0 prediction of conventional models of strong interactions, such as perturbative QCD. The validity of perturbative QCD is believed to improve with increasing energy and with increasing P{sub {perpendicular}}{sup 2}, and this proposed Fermilab experiment would increase the incident energy by about a factor of 30. The experiment would be done using a Polarized Proton Target (PPT) employing radiation-doped NH{sup 3} beads and a 'local' cooling power of about 130 mW at 1/2{sup o} K. Such a target …

Using nonradial pulsations to determine the envelope composition of very evolved stars

Recent observational and theoretical studies of the ZZ Ceti variables (DA degenerate dwarfs), the DBV variables (DB degenerate dwarfs), and the GW Vir variables (DO degenerate dwarfs) have shown them to be pulsating in nonradial g/sup +/-modes. The pulsation mechanism has been identified for each class of variable star and, in all cases, involves predictions of the stars envelope composition. The ZZ Ceti variables must have pure hydrogen surface layers, the DBV stars must have pure helium surface layers, and the GW Vir stars must have carbon and oxygen rich surface layers. 44 refs.
