Role of human- and animal-sperm studies in the evaluation of male reproductive hazards (open access)

Role of human- and animal-sperm studies in the evaluation of male reproductive hazards

Human sperm tests provide a direct means of assessing chemically induced spermatogenic dysfunction in man. Available tests include sperm count, motility, morphology (seminal cytology), and Y-body analyses. Over 70 different human exposures have been monitored in various groups of exposed men. The majority of exposures studied showed a significant change from control in one or more sperm tests. When carefully controlled, the sperm morphology test is statistically the most sensitive of these human sperm tests. Several sperm tests have been developed in nonhuman mammals for the study of chemical spermatotoxins. The sperm morphology test in mice has been the most widely used. Results with this test seem to be related to germ-cell mutagenicity. In general, animal sperm tests should play an important role in the identification and assessment of potential human reproductive hazards. Exposure to spermatotoxins may lead to infertility, and more importantly, to heritable genetic damage. While there are considerable animal and human data suggesting that sperm tests may be used to detect agents causing infertility, the extent to which these tests detect heritable genetic damage remains unclear. Wire-rope emplacement of diagnostics systems (open access)

Wire-rope emplacement of diagnostics systems

The study reported here was initiated to determine if, with the Cable Downhole System (CDS) currently under development, there is an advantage to using continuous wire rope to lower the emplacement package to the bottom of the hole. A baseline design using two wire ropes as well as several alternatives are discussed in this report. It was concluded that the advantages of the wire-rope emplacement system do not justify the cost of converting to such a system, especially for LLNL's maximum emplacement package weights.

Pulse-power circuit diagnostics for the Nova laser (open access)

Pulse-power circuit diagnostics for the Nova laser

The Nova laser will have a large pulse power system for driving laser amplifiers, incorporating approximately 1600 flashlamp circuits. An automated system has been designed for diagnosing the condition of these flashlamp circuits. It records digitized circuit current waveforms and detects current excursions above a given threshold. In addition, it is able to fire flashlamps at a low energy to ascertain the health of the system. Data from this system can be ploted for inspection by the operator, analyzed by the computer system and archived for future reference.

Estimation of tracer diffusion coefficients of ions in aqueous solution (open access)

Estimation of tracer diffusion coefficients of ions in aqueous solution

Equations are given for estimating tracer diffusion coefficients D/sub i//sup 0/ of ions at infinite dilution in terms of limiting ionic conductances ..lambda../sub i//sup 0/. Also given are generalized Nernst-Hartley equations for binary and multicomponent diffusion coefficients D/sup 0/ and D/sub ij//sup 0/, respectively, at infinite dilution. Data, estimates, and correlations for ..lambda../sub i//sup 0/ at 25/sup 0/C and other temperatures are discussed. Estimated values of ..lambda../sub i//sup 0/ are tabulated from 0-300/sup 0/C for ions of waste isolation interest and for ions of economic interest in geothermal brines. Estimates of their tracer diffusion coefficients at infinite dilution are tabulated. A rule of thumb, good to a factor of 2, is presented. Very limited data (available only at 25/sup 0/C) indicate that D/sub i//D/sub i//sup 0/ generally declines as the concentration of salt or supporting electrolyte increases. 6 figures, 2 tables.

Plasma-Parameter Measurements Using Neutral-Particle-Beam Attenuation (open access)

Plasma-Parameter Measurements Using Neutral-Particle-Beam Attenuation

Intense and energetic neutral-particle-beam injection used for fueling or heating magnetically confined, controlled-fusion experimental plasmas can also provide diagnostic measurements of the plasmas. The attenuation of an atomic beam (mainly from charge-exchange and ionization interactions) when passing through a plasma gives the plasma line density. Orthogonal arrays of highly collimated detectors of the secondary-electron-emission type have been used in magnetic-mirror experiments to measure neutral-beam attenuation along chords through the plasma volume at different radial and axial positions. The radial array is used to infer the radial plasma-density profile; the axial array, to infer the axial plasma-density profile and the ion angular distribution at the plasma midplane.

Physics conceptual design for the MFTF-B transition coil (open access)

Physics conceptual design for the MFTF-B transition coil

The physics constraints related to finite-..beta.. equilibria, ..beta.. limits due to curvature-driven MHD modes, and ion transport in the central cell. These physics constraints had to be satisfied subject to certain non-physics constraints. Principal among these were the geometric and structural features of the existing MFTF-B magnet set and the required access for neutral beams for pumping. These constraints and their origins are discussed.

Radiative effects of a CO/sub 2/ increase: results of a model comparison

A comparison of infrared radiative transfer models is announced. The initial phase is underway, with other phases scheduled through 1984. The results of the ir model comparison will be included in the state-of-the-art report on climate modeling. Although the time scale for completion of the comparison is a few years, significant preliminary results have already been obtained. (PSB)

Producing thermochemical hydrogen with the tandem-mirror reactor (open access)

Producing thermochemical hydrogen with the tandem-mirror reactor

Fusion power holds the promise to supply not only electricity but also fuels to meet the balance of our energy needs. A new integrated power and breeding blanket design is described for tandem mirror reactors. The blanket incorporates features that make it suitable for synthetic fuel production. In particular, it is matched to the thermal and electrical power requirements of the General Atomic water-splitting process for production of hydrogen. Some improvements to the high temperature chemical process steps are described. These improvements are expected to allow production of hydrogen at about $13/GJ wholesale, including financing costs, capital amortization, and profit.

Effects of magnetic non-linearities on a stored proton beam and their implications for superconducting storage rings (open access)

Effects of magnetic non-linearities on a stored proton beam and their implications for superconducting storage rings

In this report we describe an experiment which was conducted at the SPS to observe the combined effects of a single isolated high-order nonlinear resonance, nonlinear detuning, and tune modulation. The nonlinear resonance, as well as the nonlinear detuning, was driven by a nonlinear lens, which had been previously used at the SPS for the study of the beam-beam interactions. The nonlinear motion of a particle in the field of the lens is discussed.
