Exceeding always-safe ratio in F-2 and F-1 tanks: Number 2, CY-63 (open access)

Exceeding always-safe ratio in F-2 and F-1 tanks: Number 2, CY-63

The always critically-safe ratio of plutonium to enriched uranium was exceeded in the F-2 and V-1 vessels on June 6, 1963. The allowable always-safe ratio at the time of the incident vas 627 grams per ton. The actual ratio achieved vas 673 grams per ton. This report details the investigation into events leading to the over-batch.

PT IP-754 physics testing of H Reactor: Final report (open access)

PT IP-754 physics testing of H Reactor: Final report

Significant changes in fuel design, operating levels, loading geometry, and moderator condition have taken place since the Hanford reactors started operation. Changes which affect nuclear safety parameters require continuing analysis of the possible effects on safety system strengths and maximum potential reactivities. For this reason the shutdown of a Hanford reactor offered an excellent opportunity to measure many of the above factors without a significant production loss. Therefore a test program was proposed and carried out at H Reactor starting April 22, 1965 and ending May 5, 1965. All of the tests were designed to provide information concerning parameters which affect nuclear safety and control calculation limits. This document is a summary of the deactivation test results without application and recommendations to specific nuclear safety questions. Rather, it is intended that the results listed herein will serve as a basis for further study and application to nuclear safety technology.

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core II Without the SM-1 Core I High Burnup Elements and With the PM-1-M-2 Element (open access)

Hazards Report for SM-1 Core II Without the SM-1 Core I High Burnup Elements and With the PM-1-M-2 Element

Abstract: The removal of both SM-1 Core I high burnup elements from SM-1 Core II and the insertion of the PM-1-M-2 element and the SM-1 Core I spare element in SM-1 Core II is discussed. Nuclear and thermal characteristics of Core II with these changes are presented and conclusions related to the changes in the hazard potential are made. If the core change indicated by this report is made, local peaking factors will be decreased and burnout ratios will be increased. This, of course, in itself leads to a more conservative estimate of core safety. There is no conceivable reason why the perturbation may not be safely made in the SM-1 Core II.

Correction to the Debye-Huckel Theory (open access)

Correction to the Debye-Huckel Theory

In a recent paper, Bowers and Salpeter described a method for calculating the correlation energy of a classical one-component electron gas. The same problem has been considered by Meeron, Friedman, and Abe, using methods involving the summation of cert infinite classes of diagrams. While the relation between these theories and that of Bowers and Saltpeter is not year clear, it is interesting to note that Abe obtained an equivalent expression by approximating an integral. We have calculated the contribution to the equation of state using Abe's original expression and we found that the equation is valid only for certain values and it gives a correction of the wrong sign. On the other hand, our results are comparable to those which Bowers and Salpeter obtain from higher approximations.

Synthesis of Dimethyl Selenide (open access)

Synthesis of Dimethyl Selenide

The preparation of essentially pure dimethyl selenide for the Isotype Separations Group, Chemistry Division, is described. The compound was prepared by warming a mixture of selenium, sodium hydroxide, sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate in aqueous solution for several hours at 50°C and then adding methyl iodide. Dimethyl selenide was removed by distillation.
