The NACA high-speed motion-picture camera optical compensation at 40,000 photographs per second

The principle of operation of the NACA high-speed camera is completely explained. This camera, operating at the rate of 40,000 photographs per second, took the photographs presented in numerous NACA reports concerning combustion, preignition, and knock in the spark-ignition engine. Many design details are presented and discussed, details of an entirely conventional nature are omitted. The inherent aberrations of the camera are discussed and partly evaluated. The focal-plane-shutter effect of the camera is explained. Photographs of the camera are presented. Some high-speed motion pictures of familiar objects -- photoflash bulb, firecrackers, camera shutter -- are reproduced as an illustration of the quality of the photographs taken by the camera.

100 Areas technical activities report -- Physics, October 1946

The D Pile was down five times for scheduled shutdowns. The fifth shutdown was of short duration for the purpose of discharging temporary ``P`` columns. Details of the shutdowns are given. Three new bismuth columns were established, Special Requests were charged into seven tubes and three Special Requests were discharged. Three tubes were charged with four-inch slugs. The power level of the F Pile has been corrected for the discrepancy noted last month. Material for irradiation under the Special Request program was charged into six tubes and the B experimental hole during the month. The effect of poison columns and rods on the temperature distribution of the pile was checked for the overall content of the pile. The F Pile gained two in hours in cold, clean reactivity during the month if allowance is made for xenon poison values corresponding to 190 MW for the beginning of the month and 200 MW at the end of the month. The graphite stringer removed from the ``D`` test hole of the D Pile on 3-12-46 was studied physical radiation effects.

Tank Tests of an Alternate Hull Form for the Consolidated Vultee PB2Y-3 Airplane

From Summary: "Tests have been made in Langley tank no. I of a dynamic model of the Consolidated Vultee PB2Y-3 airplane. These tests were made using an alternate hull form, the purpose of which was to reduce the bow spray and eliminate the landing instability which are objectionable features of the production design. The major differences from the PB2Y-3 hull included a deeper step to improve the landing stability , and a lengthened forebody and increased beam to reduce the sway in the propellers and on the flaps. The tests showed that the spray characteristics of the revised hull form were much better than that to the production design. In addition the take-off and landing stability of the model with the alternate hull were satisfactory."

From Introduction: "A 12-percent-chord-thick wedge section and a reversed NACA 0012 section were chosen for these tests as they are representative of sections having no boat tailing and appreciable boat tailing (i.e., blunt and rounded trailing edges, respectively), and the results of this investigation are compared with those obtained from a previous investigation of the NACA 0012 section. Conclusions are drawn regarding the relative merits of the two unconventional sections and the conventional section in transonic speed range."

Stability derivatives of triangular wings at supersonic speeds

"The analysis of the stability derivatives of low-aspect-ratio triangular wings at subsonic and supersonic speeds, given in NACA TN no. 1423, is extended to apply to triangular wings having large vertex angles and traveling at supersonic speeds. The lift, rolling moment due to sideslip, and damping in roll and pitch for this more general case have been treated elsewhere on the basis of the theory of small disturbances. The surface potentials for angle of attack and rolling taken therefrom are used to obtain the several side-force and yawing-moment derivatives that depend on leading-edge suction, and a tentative value for the rolling moment due to yawing" (p. 317).

Altitude-test-chamber investigation of effects of flame-holder blocked area and gutter width on performance of 28-inch diameter ram jet at simulated flight Mach number of 2.0 for altitudes from 40,000 to 55,000 feet was conducted at NACA Lewis laboratory. Ten flame holders investigated covered gutter widths from 1.00 to 2.50 inches and blocked areas from 40.5 to 62.0 percent of combustion-chamber area. Gutter width did not appreciably affect combustion efficiency.

The efficient prosecution of the research and process development on polonium, radium, actinium, waste disposal, and alpha-neutron sources requires the use of a wide variety of instrumental techniques such as: alpha, beta, gamma, and neutron counters and survey meters; emission, absorption, and mass spectroscopy: x-ray and electron diffraction; microbalances; and calorimeters. The complex and kaleidoscopic aspects of our research program require; (1) The application of standard instruments and techniques to a variety of problems; (2) The development of new techniques for the use of standard instruments; and (3) The development of new or improved Instruments. The sum of the above three categories constitutes the field of supporting research. The amplifier for counting pulses of wide dynamic range which was developed for counting beta particles in the presence of alphas has operated so satisfactorily that it has been decided to attempt to adopt it for neutron counting. Substantial improvement at medium counting rates has already been obtained but results at high counting rates are not as satisfactory. The development of a survey meter for monitoring fast neutrons has been under way for sometime. The attainment of higher efficiency has been attempted by the use of a dual-chambered counter tube. Memorandum presenting flight tests on a swept-wing fighter airplane at a range of Mach numbers, which indicate the critical flight regions for balancing, maneuvering, and buffeting horizontal-tail loads. The critical balancing tail loads were found to occur at the highest test Mach number of about 1.03 at the highest airplane load factor. Results regarding balancing tail loads, maneuvering tail loads in elevator-pulse maneuvers, maneuvering tail loads in pitch-up maneuvers, buffet tail loads, and tail-load distributions are provided.

AN SCF LCAO MO STUDY OF Li2

An LCAO molecular orbital calculation using the full six-electron hamiltonian has been per formed on Li2 a t a nuclear separation equal to 'the experimental internuclear distance. The molecular wave function consisted of one antisymmetrized product made up of molecular orbitals formed as the best linear combinations of Slater Is, 2s, and 2p atomic orbitals. The orbital exponents for these atomic orbitals were respectively 2. 69, 0.64 and 0. 53 as determined by a variational calculation on the lithium atom. In computing the molecular dissociation energy, the .energy of two separated lithium atoms was taken to be that obtained by this variational calculation. The computed dissociation energy was found to be 0. 33 ev compared with the experimental value of 1. 05 (where a slight correction for zero-point energy has been made). The ratio of the computed molecular ground-state energy to the experimental is 0. 9902 while the difference of these quantities is 4. 00 ev. Certain other molecular constants are calculated and compared with available experimental data.
