Photograph used for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "Death row men do strange things before they die. Even old executioneers can't explain last resort antics of hardened criminals. Some whimper like little boys. Others talk incessantly. They gaze out through the half-darkened chamber with helpless expressions. Few admit guilt. Seventy-nine men have walked through that one way iron door into the execution chamber at the McAlester prison. The dark basement is located under the warden's office. Chance for a last minute reprieve is almost nil. Capital punishment will precipitate a vigorous debate in social or legislative circles any time the question arises. The pros and cons of capital punishment have beer debated many times in legislative halls. Few if any lawmakers are willing to author a bill banning the death penalty in Oklahoma. A number of other states have passed such legislation. (photo tag: This electric chair has taken 79 lives.)"
