Using Curriculum Mapping to Understand Information Literacy in Political Science Curricula (open access)

Using Curriculum Mapping to Understand Information Literacy in Political Science Curricula

Article presenting a curriculum mapping study of noncore course offerings in political science curricula by an early-career librarian. It combines syllabi study and curriculum mapping methods to analyze the language of student learning objectives (SLOs) from course syllabi and to integrate SLOs with threshold concepts from the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education and the AAC&U Information Literacy VALUE Rubric. The methods produce two sample sets: one of core concept representation and the other of additional observances for syllabi improvements. Results analyze the frequency and percentage distributions of threshold concepts in SLOs. The author outlines strategies for engaging faculty in information literacy and suggests how librarians and faculty might inform information literacy teaching in the department.

An investigation of steric influence on the reactivity of FeV(O)(OH) tautomers in stereospecific C–H hydroxylation

Article describes how two new tetradentate N4 ligands (LN4), LN4 = Me2,Me2PyzTACN (1-(2-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)ethyl)-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) and Me2,MeImTACN (1-((1-methyl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)methyl)-4,7-dimethyl-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) have been synthesized and their corresponding Fe(II) complexes [FeII(Me2,Me2PyzTACN)(CF3SO3)2], 1Pz, and [FeII(Me2,MeImTACN)(CF3SO3)2], 1Im, have been prepared and characterized. Based on these labelling studies, the steric influence exerted by each of the ligands towards the relative reactivity of the oxo ligands of the corresponding pair of Fe(V)(O)(OH) tautomers can be derived.

Thermo/hydration responsive shape memory polymers with enhanced hydrophilicity for biomedical applications (open access)

Thermo/hydration responsive shape memory polymers with enhanced hydrophilicity for biomedical applications

Article states that thiol-ene/acrylate shape memory polymers (SMPs) have sufficient stiffness for facile insertion and precision placement and soften after exposure to physiological conditions to reduce the mechanical mismatch with body tissue; as a result, they have demonstrated excellent potential as substrates for various flexible bioelectronic devices, such as cochlear implants, nerve cuffs, cortical probes, plexus blankets, and spinal cord stimulators. Here, the authors report a new strategy for designing SMPs with enhanced shape recovery properties and lower moduli than previously reported SMPs under physiological conditions without sacrificing stiffness at room temperature by introducing a hydrophilic monomer.

Disentangling Orbital and Valley Hall Effects in Bilayers of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (open access)

Disentangling Orbital and Valley Hall Effects in Bilayers of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides

This article shows that a bilayer of 2H-MoS₂ is an orbital Hall insulator that exhibits a sizeable orbital Hall effect in the absence of both spin and valley Hall effects. The results are based on density functional theory and low-energy effective model calculations and strongly suggest that bilayers of TMDs are highly suitable platforms for direct observation of the orbital Hall insulating phase in two-dimensional materials.

Development of Neutral Red as a pH/pCO2 Luminescent Sensor for Biological Systems

This article demonstrates for the first time that Neutral Red (NR) can also serve as a CO2 sensor, because of NR’s unique optical properties, which change with dissolved carbon dioxide (dCO2) concentrations. In this article optical sensitivity of NR was quantified as a function of changes in absorption and emission spectra to dCO2 in a pH 7.3 buffer medium at eight dCO2 concentrations.
