Opacity of Air at High Altitudes and High Temperatures

The opacity and thermodynamic properties of air at temperatures above 10 e.v. and densities below normal have been calculated under the guidance of H. Mayer in accordance with the prescription given in AECD 1870 (LA-647). Corresponding to given densities and temperatures, self-consistent distributions of electrons in bound states and their eigen energies are determined. With this information we compute the thermodynamic properties of air and the frequency-dependent absorption coefficients. Finally the opacity--a weighted average of the latter--is found

"An investigation of the DM-1 Glider, which had approximately triangular plan form, an aspect ratio of 1.8 and a 60 degree sweptback leading edge, has been conducted in the Langley full-scale tunnel. The investigation consisted of the determination of the separate effects of the following modifications made to the glider on its maximum lift and stability characteristics: (a) installation of sharp leading edges over the inboard semispan of the wing, (b) removal of the vertical fin, (c) sealing of the elevon control-balance slots, (d) installation of redesigned thin vertical surfaces, (e) installation of faired sharp leading edges, and (f) installation of canopy" (p. 1).

The sea-level performance of I-16 turbojet engine at zero ram was investigated to determine the effects of an intake duct, shroud, and tail pipe intended for installation in an XFR-1 airplane. Engine speeds ranged from 8000 to 16,500 rpm for several variations of the intake duct and tail pipes.

A wind tunnel investigation was conducted to determine the performance of a 4000-pound-thrust axial-flow turbojet engine with a high flow compressor. Pressure altitudes included 5000 to 40000 feet with ram pressure ratios from 1.00 to 1.82. Altitudes included 20000 to 40000 feet and ram pressure ratios from 1.09 to 1.75. A comparison is made between engine performance with high flow and low flow compressors.

A Closed Circuit Television System for In-Well Use -- Interim Report

Wells drilled to date on the Hanford project represent and initial investment of over one million dollars. These nearly six hundred wells have been used and will continue to be used for observation and monitoring purposes of direct interest to ground disposal of radioactive wastes. Through measurement of depth to the water table the changing gradients as a result of large volume waste disposal are determined and direction of ground water flow established. The extent of contamination in ground water is measured in samples dawn from these wells. Aquifer permeability is measured and ground water velocity predicted from pumping tests carried out out in these structure

The Development of Fixed Screen Resin-In-Pulp Devices

A resin-in-pulp process was developed using a series of fixed-screen or Winchester cells. Various laboratory and pilot plant models were constructed and tested under simulated plant conditions. The fixed-screen device proved very effective in the recovery of uranium and/or vanadium by a continuous, resin-in-pulp process.
