H4LM Graphite (open access)

H4LM Graphite

A commercial graphite useful in nuclear reactor construction is described. A survey of all currently available sources on chemical and physical properties was made and the information listed. Some data on cost and available sizes are also included. (auth)

Progress report for the projection welded brazed closure (open access)

Progress report for the projection welded brazed closure

This report covers progress on the Projection Welded Brazed Closure following work of Ard and Steinkamp (HW-69592). In order to continue the investigation of the closure on NPR inner fuel, a 600 KVA machine was acquired. Weld tests were conducted; the heat balance problem was addressed.

Design of production test IP-423-A-FP evaluation of uranium fuel cores having virus heat treatments (open access)

Design of production test IP-423-A-FP evaluation of uranium fuel cores having virus heat treatments

Fuel element warp occurring during the irradiation period is considered to be one of the major fuel element dimensional stability problems. Warp has been shown to correlate with accelerated corrosion attack. and also can contribute to stuck fuel charges, particularly in bumpered or self-supported charges where the annular clearances are reduced due to the presence of the projection rails. Thus, any process which offers a potential for reducing the average warp should be evaluated. Preliminary tests offsite have indicated that the use of a commercially available oil for a quench medium following beta heat treatment produces a fuel core with less residual stresses and a slightly finer and more uniform grain size than that produced by the present HAPO method of water quench. Thus, adoption of an oil quench nay offer a means whereby warp can be reduced without incurring costly revisions to equipment or fabrication processes. This report presents an irradiation testing program to evaluate the performance of oil quenched cores and to determine the optimum core heat treatment.

Reproductive performance of female miniature swine ingesting Sr{sup 90} daily (open access)

Reproductive performance of female miniature swine ingesting Sr{sup 90} daily

A long term study designed to determine the biological effects of daily Sr{sup 90} ingestion in miniature swine has been underway in this laboratory since 1958. The Ultimate objective of this study is to provide data that will assist in defining for man the levels of dietary Sr{sup 90} at which there is no damage or negligible damage to him or his progeny. The animals being used in these studies are miniature swine which have a mature weight of 60 to 80 kg. The dietary requirements, gastrointestinal tract, and bone mass of miniature swine are quite similar to man. These factors, along with a relatively long life span, dictated their use in this study.

Definition of Tory II-C (open access)

Definition of Tory II-C

From time to time, in discussion of possible naval-based nuclear ramjet missile systems, a question arises concerning whether or not a particular reactor would or would fall within the `Tory II-C Technology`. Such a question is meaningless unless a definition is furnished. This report provides such a definition.
