Detection and measurement of Post-Rosenbluth convective instability in MFTF with a hybrid CO/sub 2/ laser--heterodyne diagnostic system

To measure and classify the Post-Rosenbluth convective loss-cone instability in MFTF, we propose to use a CO/sub 2/ laser consisting of a TEA-pulsed section and a low pressure CW section, together with a light mixing receiver. Calculations show that this system offers sufficient power and sensitivity to detect instability throughout the range from strong coherent light scattering to weak incoherent scattering when the instability is eliminated.

Initial TMX-U thermal-barrier experiments

This paper describes results from the initial thermal barrier experiments in the Tandem Mirror Experiment-Upgrade (TMX-U). Strong end plugging has been produced using a combination of ECRH gyrotrons with sloshing ion beam injection. Plugging has been achieved with a central cell higher than that of the end plugs. In these low-density central cell experiments (7 x 10/sup 11/ cm/sup -3/) the axial losses (tau/sub parallel to/ = 20 to 80 ms) are smaller than the radial losses (tau/sub perpendicular to/ = 4 to 8 ms). Although no direct measurements are yet available to determine if a thermal barrier potential dip is generated, these experiments support many theoretical features of the thermal barrier concept.

Automated saturated standard cell intercomparison

A cost effective, highly efficient, and automatic method of intercomparing standard cells has been sought after and implemented, utilizing computer control and a commercially available scanner. This system reduces intercomparison time from 4 hours to 30 minutes using the standard National Bureau of Standard (NBS) 4 x 4 design. 7 figs., 1 tab.

Tensile and stress rupture tests of S8DR Hastelloy-N heats: ORNL verification tests

In connection with the ORR Hastelloy-N irradiation experiments, a limited number of tensile tests and uniaxial and biaxial stress-rupture tests on S8DR Hastelloy-N heats were conducted at AI to determine the effect of some of the ORNL test conditions. The tests performed at AI were in parallel to the ORNL control tests. The results showed that the effect of the test condition variations between the two tests were generally insignificant. The effect of the test conditions is discussed.

High-energy air shock study in steel and grout pipes

Voitenko compressors are used to generate 43 mm/..mu..s air shocks in both a steel and a grout outlet pipe containing ambient atmospheric air. Fiber-optic ports provide diaphragm burst times, time-of-arrival (TOA) data, and velocities for the shock front along the 20-mm-ID exit pipes. Pressure profiles are obtained at higher enthalpy shock propagation than ever before and at many locations along the exit pipes. Numerous other electronic sensors and postshot observations are described, as well as experimental results. The primary objectives of the experiments are as follows: (1) provide a data base for normalization/improvement of existing finite-difference codes that describe high-energy air shocks and gas propagation; (2) obtain quantitative results on the relative attenuation effects of two very different wall materials for high-energy air shocks and gas flows. The extensive experimental results satisfy both objectives.

Safety evaluation for the inner canister closure station

The Inner Canister Closure Station (ICCS), built by Remote Technology Corporation, will be operability tested. The ICCS is used to remotely leak test Inner Canister Closures (ICC's) and replace ICC's that are not water tight. After operability testing, the ICCS will be inspected and sent to the 717-F mock-up shop for remotability demonstration and dimensional checks, then installed in the Vitrification Building, 221-S. An analysis of potential safety hazards, equipment safety features, and procedural controls indicates that the ICCS can be operated without undue hazard to employees or to the public. A safety inspection and a new equipment inspection will be held before operation to verify that the ICCS meets Savannah River Site safety requirements. 4 refs., 6 figs.

(Collaborative coal project between the USA and India)

Under the Phase II, Alternative Energy Resources Development (AERD) project of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the Government of India (GOI), five collaborative coal projects have been initiated in the areas of: (1) NO{sub x}/SO{sub x} control from coal-fired power plants, (2) slagging combustor development for high-ash Indian coals, (3) characterization of Indian coals for combustion and gasification. (4) diagnostic studies for prediction of power plant life expectancy, and (5) environmental and natural resource analysis of coal cycle. The Pittsburgh Energy Technology Center (PETC) has the implementation responsibility for these projects. The Indian collaborative institutions identified for these projects are the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL), Trichy, (projects 1--4), and the Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) for project 5. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is providing cross-cut technical coordination and support for these five projects.

Radiation from moving charged particles with spin

The theory of radiation emitted by a charged particle with spin in relativistic motion in an external magnetic field is reviewed. Approximate expressions suitable numerical computation, in far and near field, are derived. In particular, the case of the passage of a particle accelerator beam through an undulator is considered. It is shown that observation of the spectrum of the emitted radiation, in its two states of polarization, can be used not only for beam diagnostics, but also to measure the spin state of the accelerated particles. Undulator radiation is compared with Compton scattering of laser light by the particle beam. Examples for high energy electron and proton colliders are presented.

We present a wiggler system based on currently available superconducting technology. The system is designed to provide maximum central field of 4.4 tesla with a specified period length of 160 mm and a gap of 40 mm, while meeting the field quality requirements along all axes. Subsequently, the traveler was also asked to chair a session and to be a judge of the students papers entered in a contest for a $1000 first prize.

Examination of yield determination by the Magnetic Bubble Effect

This report surveys the preliminary work of P. J. Ebert, a proponent of the Magnetic Bubble'' Effect, as well as conclusions reached by L. F. Wouters and others. The idea behind the Magnetic Bubble Effect is that an exploding fireball from a surface or subsurface nuclear explosion releases electrons which circulate around the earth's magnetic field lines and create an expanding magnetic dipole which persists underground for {approx equal}0.01 sec. This dipole radiates a low-frequency electromagnetic field through the earth in a diffusive manner because the earth's conduction current overwhelms the displacement current at VLF and ELF frequencies. By using this concept of diffusive fields it might be possible to estimate the yield of an underground nuclear test from transient low-frequency field measurements on or near the ground in the range 1--5km from ground zero. We closely examine the diffusive-field description of the transient fields by L. W. Miller. Miller's work enables us to derive rather easily the Green-function'' fields in space and time of a spatially and temporally impulsive vertical magnetic dipole, m{sub z}, and horizontal dipole, m{sub x}, in a homogeneous earth of scalar electrical conductivity {sigma}, magnetic permeability {mu}{sub 0}, and relative dielectric constant, {var epsilon}{sub r}, …

This report presents estimates of proved reserves of crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids as of December 31, 1989, and production volumes for the year 1989 for the total United States and for selected states and state sub-divisions. Estimates are presented for the following four categories of natural gas: total gas (wet after lease separation), its two major components (nonassociated and associated-dissolved gas), and total dry gas (wet gas adjusted for the removal of liquids at natural gas processing plants). In addition, two components of natural gas liquids, lease condensate and natural gas plant liquids, have their reserves and production reported separately. Fabrication of hot die sized Diffusion Bonded Fuel Elements for Supplement ``A`` to Production Test IP-546-A

Production Test IP-546-A. consisting of 20 charges for the purpose of irradiating the first hot die sized fuel elements was charged in C-Reactor July 27, 1963. A second tests PT-IP-616-A containing a total of 19 charges had been charged on two separate outages; 13 land 6 tubes on September 28, 1963 and October 30, 1963, respectively. Fabrication of test quantities was becoming more routine and additional irradiation tests were planned. This report summarizes the fabrication of hot die sized fuel elements originally intended for Production Test IP-630-A, but changed to ``Supplement ``A`` to Production Test IP-546-A, Irradiation of Diffusion Bonded Fuel Elements,`` HW-75465 E. The production test was changed due to unexpected growth behavior of hot die sized fuel during irradiation.

Test plan for core sampling drill bit temperature monitor

At WHC, one of the functions of the Tank Waste Remediation System division is sampling waste tanks to characterize their contents. The push-mode core sampling truck is currently used to take samples of liquid and sludge. Sampling of tanks containing hard salt cake is to be performed with the rotary-mode core sampling system, consisting of the core sample truck, mobile exhauster unit, and ancillary subsystems. When drilling through the salt cake material, friction and heat can be generated in the drill bit. Based upon tank safety reviews, it has been determined that the drill bit temperature must not exceed 180 C, due to the potential reactivity of tank contents at this temperature. Consequently, a drill bit temperature limit of 150 C was established for operation of the core sample truck to have an adequate margin of safety. Unpredictable factors, such as localized heating, cause this buffer to be so great. The most desirable safeguard against exceeding this threshold is bit temperature monitoring . This document describes the recommended plan for testing the prototype of a drill bit temperature monitor developed for core sampling by Sandia National Labs.
