Separation of Iron and Cobalt on Synthetic Resin

In the separation of mixtures of radioactive iron and cobalt from neutron irradiated targets and in the removal of iron from cobalt targets for cyclotron production of radioiron, it is desirable to have a method superior to extraction from isopropyl ether in efficiency and ease of manipulation. Recent studies by Moore and Kraus on the separation of cobalt and nickel and on the behavior of iron in hydrochloric acid on Dowex-l resin in relation to the selective adsorption of chloride complexes of these elements have suggested the use of resin for the separation of iron and cobalt.

Memorandum presenting rudder pulse maneuvers obtained with the Convair XF-92A delta-wing research airplane at an altitude of about 30,000 feet over a Mach number range of 0.52 to 0.92. Tests were made with and without a wing fence. By analyzing the maneuvers, the characteristics of the airplane transient, airplane stability derivatives, and frequency-response characteristics were measured.

"A comparison is presented between the experimentally measured and theoretically calculated (by the method of NACA TN 3067) rates of roll of two rocket-propelled models with flexible rectangular wings. The comparisons show that although there are large aeroelastic losses in rolling rate, the theory predicts the actual rate of roll accurately" (p. 1).

Boron and zirconium from crucible refractories in a complex heat-resistant alloy

In a laboratory study of the factors involved in the influence of induction vacuum melting on 55ni-20cr-15co-4mo-3ti-3al heat resistant alloy, it was found that the major factor was the type of ceramic used as the crucible. The study concluded that trace amounts of boron or zirconium derived from reaction of the melt with the crucible refactories improved creep-rupture properties at 1,600 degrees F. Boron was most effective and, in addition, markedly improved hot-workability.

In order to obtain data for the development and design of the Purex dissolvers and to demonstrate to Manufacturing and Technical personnel the feasibility of increasing the size of dissolver cuts at BiPO{sub 4} and Redox, a dissolver production test program in a BiPO{sub 4} dissolver is requested. These tests are expected to supplement the program already initiated on the 321 Bldg. dissolver, explaining dissolver behavior to the extent that existing dissolvers can be operated under more nearly optimum conditions and that new dissolvers can be designed with accuracy.
