Report presenting testing to determine the effects of viscosity on the drag and base pressure characteristics of various bodies of revolution at a Mach number of 1.5. The models were tested with smooth surfaces and roughness to evaluate the effects of Reynolds number for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers. Results regarding the reduction of data, precision, effects of support interference, Schileren photographs, and theoretical calculations are provided.

The angular distribution of the recoil protons in neutron-proton scattering at 90 Mev has been measured for angles between 5{sup o} and 65{sup o} from the direction of the neutron beam. The neutrons were produced by stripping 190 Mev deuterons in a 1/2 inch Be target in the 184-inch F.M. cyclotron. R. Serber has calculated the neutron energy distribution; it has a peak at 90 Mev and a half width of 27 Mev. This distributiQn has been checked experimentally for the neutrons by Wilson Powell and by W.Chupp, E.Gardner, and T.B.Taylor for the protons also produced by stripping. The neutrons were collimated by a two-inch hole through 8 feet of concrete. Thin paraffin scatters of known hydrogen and carbon content were used; the number of protons arising from neutron-carbon and neutron-air reactions was determined by using pure carbon scatters and by making blank runs. The scatters were placed in the beam outside of the concrete shielding at a point approximately 52 feet from the cyclotron target. The scattered protons were detected by a telescope of four proportional counters used in coincidence, and set at a constant distance from the scatterer but at a varying angle from the neutron beam. Report presenting investigations to determine the antiknock effectiveness of various additive-water solutions used as internal coolants in conjunction with AN-F-28, Amendment-2, fuel in a modified CFR engine.

An investigation of the antiknock effectiveness of various additive-water solutions when used as internal coolants has been conducted at the NACA Cleveland laboratory. Nine compounds have been previously run in a CFR engine and the results are presented. In an effort to find a good anti-knock-coolant additive with more desirable physical properties than those of the nine compounds previously investigated, water solutions of four alkyl amines, three alkanolamines, six amides, and eight heterocyclic compounds were investigated and the results are presented.

Memorandum presenting a preliminary investigation to determine the effects of alpha-particle bombardment on the creep rate of aluminum wire at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. The alpha radiation from an 85-millicurie polonium source appeared to decrease slightly the creep rate of the aluminum.

Report presenting an investigation of a surge inhibitor that was able to cause a considerable gain in stable-airflow operating range over the range of equivalent impeller tip speeds tested. While the inhibitor was designed to triple the stable-airflow operating range, it increased it more than eight times its original value.

Memorandum presenting a determination of the performance of a single-cylinder spark-ignition engine modified to operate on a compression-ignition cycle with a compression ratio of 8.0. Experimental data were obtained at an inlet-manifold pressure of 100 inches of mercury absolute, fuel-air ratios of 0.040 and 0.025, and engine exhaust pressures of 30 to 100 inches of mercury absolute. Results regarding single-cylinder-engine experimental data and full-scale-engine calculations are provided.

A working chart is presented by means of which the ratio of the total temperature of the gases at the combustion-chamber outlet to the total temperature of the gases at the combustion-chamber inlet may be determined from the measured loss of total pressure across the combustion chamber and the known values of air flow, total pressure, and total temperature at the combustion-chamber inlet. Values of total-temperature ratio across the combustion chamber of a 20-inch ram jet were obtained in the Cleveland altitude wind tunnel over a range of pressure altitudes from 6000 to 15,000 feet" (p. 1).

The crystal structures of alloys 61, X-40,X-50, 422-19, 6059, and Vitallium, derived from x-ray diffraction, are discussed. The alloys have been, or are being considered for use in gas turbine applications. The predominant phase was a solid solution of the face centered cubic type of the principal constituent elements.The lattice parameters were found to be between 3.5525 and 3.5662.

"A preliminary evaluation of the spin and recovery characteristics of the XF3D-1 airplane has been made, based primarily on the results of the free-spinning tunnel tests of a model which closely simulated the XF3D-1 in tail design, tail length, and mass loading. Estimates have been made of the rudder-pedal force that may be encountered in effecting recovery from a spin and of the spin recovery parachute requirements of the airplane for demonstration spins.
