A technique was developed for the rapid and accurate determination of current efficiency for lithium dissolution through the measurement of the steady-state, nonequilibrium hydrogen gas evolution rate from closed lithium--water cells. A technique for preparing alloys of lithium through arc melting was developed. The results of the polarization studies on the first set of samples show no marked effect of Ca or Al dopants on film conductivity. A lithium--bromine analog of the lithium--water battery was discovered; the Li electrode showed an open-circuit potential of -2.85 V and a limiting current density of about 6000 A/m/sup 2/, and there was no gas evolution from cathode or anode. A technique of lithium production which may offer efficiency and production cost advantages over present-day high-temperature fused salt electrolysis techniques is being evaluated. 2 figures, 1 table. This report is intended as a ''quick-look'' report summarizing the experimental results obtained from pressure suppression experiment numbers 1.3.1, 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 that were performed on the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory's 1/5-scale boiling water reactor (BWR) Mark I pressure suppression experimental facility on April 26, 1977. A brief description of the general nature of the tests and a summary of the actual tests that were performed are given.

The hose instability is examined numerically for an unmodulated beam with the Bennett current profile J(r) ..cap alpha.. (1 + r/sup 2//a/sup 2/)/sup -2/. Channel conductivity sigma(r) is also of this form. The dispersion relation of Lee shows excellent agreement with numerical results. Transient behavior of beam is studied and found consistent with Lee's work.

An earlier attempt to demonstrate our capability to produce medical-grade Pu-238 was discontinued because of unanticipated growth of the neptunium oxide-graphite matrix targets. It has since been established through a subsequent test discharged in February that the graphite matrix targets failed because of inadequate provisions for target expansion and not because of inadequacies in the graphite matrix targets could be used successfully to produce low impurity plutonium. A report on the graphite matrix growth analysis test will be completed by mid-June 1970.
