Intramural Order 7314503 (1977--1978). Final Report. [Resonance Absorption and Electron Thermal Conductivity; Analytical Studies for Laser Fusion]

Lawrence Livermore Laboratory is interested in using very high power pulsed lasers to heat plasmas. The Plasma Research Group at the University of California, Davis, is involved in a program of applied research with the objective of extending our knowledge of absorption of very high power laser beams, plasma heating and electron thermgl transport. The work performed under this intramural order is reported in the following sections. An overview and summary of the work is given in Section 2. The work is divided into experimental tasks (reported in Section 3) and analytical and computational tasks (reported in Section 4). Finally, the reports prepared under the intramural order are listed in Section 5.

Comparative analysis of coal use options for reducing the dependence of utilities on imported oil (open access)

Comparative analysis of coal use options for reducing the dependence of utilities on imported oil

The President and the Congress are finalizing National Goals to reduce the Nation's dependence on imported oil. A key element of these goals is the conversion of utilities from oil-fired to coal-fired to yield an import reduction of 0.75 MBD by 1990. Since these utilities already exist at fixed locations, this element of the National Goals has the focus of Appolo, Polaris, Minuteman and other major successful programs. It is indicated, therefore, that the program development and management techniques employed in these programs may have useful application to the utility conversion program. These techniques include comparative systems and mission mode analysis, and the application of these techniques to the utility conversion program is discussed. It is observed that the conversions of coal-capable utilities will most likely be achieved in the first half of the next decade, while those for non coal-capable utilities will likely occur in the latter half of the next decade. It is suggested that DOE/RA initiate an in-house task force effort to make a comparative analysis of conversion alternatives to meet this goal. This analysis is discussed in some detail and it should consider the coal delivery as well as the conversion elements of the overall coal …

Cloth Measuring Reel. (open access)

Cloth Measuring Reel.

Patent for a new and improved cloth-measuring wheel. This design "consists in the peculiar combination and arrangement of the cutting-board with two standards, whereby the said cutting-board is made to act as a sufficient brace for the frame, as well as to perform the offices of a cutting board. The invention also consists in means for producing a variable tension on the cloth as it passes from the roll to the reel, whereby the tendency of different thicknesses of cloth to wind the cloth in greater or lesser lengths than the register indicates is compensated for and corrected" (lines 27-39).

Hydrothermal Pretreatment of Coal. Quarterly Report No. 4, July 16--October 15, 1990 (open access)

Hydrothermal Pretreatment of Coal. Quarterly Report No. 4, July 16--October 15, 1990

During this period we studied the effects of 350{degrees}C treatment on Argonne-supplied Wyodak coal with n-alkane undecane in place of water in both 30 min. and 5 hr. experiments. Undecane was chosen because it has a critical temperature of 363{degrees}C (calculated), similar to that for water, and is present as a liquid phase at conditions. We anticipated results little different from those from the simple thermal treatment (coal under N{sub 2}) at the same conditions. In that case we had found the production of volatiles, which were subsequently monitored by field ionization mass spectrometry (FIMS). We found the undecane treatment, however, affected the coal differently. The volatiles production was suppressed substantially after 30 min. treatment, and the product coal after 5 hr. showed virtually no volatility. It appears that the alkane encourages regressive chemistry, and our rationale at present involves its suppressing migration of reactive phenolic fragments from the matrix, and their subsequent irreversible reincorporation. The key element in the process we suggest is the net conversion of labile coal O-Ar bonds to strong coal-Ar bonds.

1995 Study and evaluation of fugitive and diffuse emissions from the 200 East Area at the Hanford Site (open access)

1995 Study and evaluation of fugitive and diffuse emissions from the 200 East Area at the Hanford Site

The objective of this study is to evaluate Hanford`s major diffuse emission sources in the 200 East Area and evaluate the effectiveness of monitoring these sources collectively. The results from this evaluation may also be utilized to demonstrate Westinghouse`s compliance status with the applicable air emissions regulations and determine if additional studies and/or evaluations are necessary. Air sampling will be conducted downwind of the 200 East Area. This site has been chosen as being representative of most large diffuse sources located on the Hanford waste sites. A review of the 1993 ambient air data indicated that {sup 137}C was detectable in this area. This study will take place during February to August of 1995. This time period will enable the collection of sufficient data to assess diffuse radionuclide emissions from the 200 East Area waste sites. This study will use existing ambient air monitoring stations supplemented with temporary air monitoring stations. Plots of the 1993 average concentrations of {sup 137}Cs and {sup 90}Sr collected from the existing stations may be found in Appendix A. Upon completion of this evaluation a recommendation will be made to perform additional sampling studies, or to discontinue further data gathering based on the evaluation`s results.
