An 805 MHz disk and washer structure for the Fermilab Linac Upgrade
The Linac Upgrade program, a portion of the Tevatron Upgrade, calls for increasing the energy of the existing 200 MeV, 201.25 MHz linac to 400 MeV in order to reduce beam emittance degradation in the Booster. This is to be accomplished by replacing the last four Alvarez linac tanks with more efficient, higher gradient 805 MHz linac structure. One of the linac structures currently under study in a collaboration between Fermilab and SAIC is the Disk-and-Washer accelerating structure with bi-periodic tee supports, four per washer pair. This structure has a stop-band for the TM/sub 11/ mode (a problem in other designs) centered near the ..pi.. TM/sub 02/ accelerating mode frequency. A novel heat shrinking technique is used in the construction of a ten-cell one-meter long vacuum prototype structure. Description of the structure, testing techniques and test results are presented. 9 refs., 4 figs., 1 tab.

An Oklahoma Highway Patrolman and six other men dig with shovels through the wreckage of a plane. There is a trailer with crash debris on it in the foreground. Photograph taken for a story in the Daily Oklahoman newspaper. Caption: "Plane Crashes. An Oklahoma Highway Patrol trooper and others sift through rubble left from a plane crash Saturday that killed pilot Steve Philips, 29, of Chickasha. The plane apparently went down after striking a power line."

Absorption of carbon dioxide in waste tanks
Air flow rates and carbon dioxide concentrations of air entering and exiting eight H-Area waste tanks were monitored for a period of one year. The average instanteous concentration of carbon dioxide in air is within the range reported offsite, and therefore is not affect by operation of the coal-fired power plant adjacent to the tank farm. Waste solutions in each of the tanks were observed to be continuously absorbing carbon dioxide. The rate of absorption of carbon dioxide decreased linearly with the pH of the solution. Personnel exposure associated with the routine sampling and analysis of radioactive wastes stored at SRP to determine the levels of corrosion inhibitors in solution could be reduced by monitoring the absorption of carbon dioxide and using the relationship between pH and carbon dioxide absorption to determine the free hydroxide concentration in solution.

Adjoint sensitivity analysis of a thermal hydraulic system undergoing phase change due to boiling transition. [BWR]
Sensitivity analysis of practical problems can be performed systematically and very efficiently by using adjoint functions. In areas of interest to nuclear reactors, this efficiency has been amply demonstrated on several widely used codes for neutronics and/or thermal hydraulic calculations. Applications of the adjoint method of sensitivity analysis to models involving phase transitions, where non-differentiability occurs, do not seem to have been reported to date. The purpose of this paper is to report results from a successful adjoint sensitivity analysis of a space- and time-dependent system where phase transition occurs due to boiling. The specific model chosen for this analysis is a simplified but representative model of a BWR pump-trip-type accident. This model is of particular importance to BWR safety, since pump failure is one of the most limiting hypothetical accidents in BWR's. This model simulates an exponential flow decay of initially subcooled FREON-114 flowing through a heated channel and undergoing boiling transition.

AFR spent-fuel-storage program. Technical progress report, April 1981-June 1981
Work on this project is focused on developing design and licensing information for the model facility. Final deliverables were prepared this period to submit to DOE for the licensing and high-density rack sub-tasks. DOE revised and reduced the scope of the 1981 AFR contract in June of 1981. Work is progressing satisfactorily to close out the remaining tasks under the revised scope by September 30, 1981.
