Caption: "A section of Oklahoma City's $5 millions, late type sewage plant with a secondary trickling filter in foreground can be seen above. There are eight such filters and four primary ones. Tanks at left are digesters where organic solids are taken from the water. Fertilizer and sewer gas are removed in this process. Except for electric lights, Oklahoma City's $5 million southside sewage disposal plant is self sufficent. That is, it operates entirely on its own power. Treated sewer water is used for hydrulic power to turn the huge fliter wheels. Pumping units are operated by sewer gas extracted from the sewage that pours into the plant at the rate of 20 million gallons a day. "if necessay we could even light the plant by generators operated by sewer gas," Frank Taylor, city superintendent of water and sewers, explained......Sewage is 99 1/2 percent water. Ed Cole, D-Okmulgee, already at odds with the speaker of the house of representatives, announced today he has accepted leadership of a fight to defeat Gov. Hall's proposed $82.6 million tax increase. He is one of a group of six democrates, alternately referred to as the "Surly Six" or the "Leper Colony," who have been stripped of meaningful committee assignments after an effort last year to defeat Rep. Rex Privett, D-Meramec, for re-election as speaker. Defeat Forecast CXole declared that "as of this morning we have enough votes pledged to defeat the tax increases." Heacknowledged, through, that Gov. Hall has not yet thrown the full force of his office behind passage of the tax measures. "It's my opinion," Cole said, "that the governor will move into the speaker's office in the next few days and start breaking arms, calling house members in one at a time to deal with them." To emphasizw the growing toll from traffic accidents, the 45th Division pulled 300 men out of their training schedule at summer camp and lined them up in a pyramid of humans for this picture. As of Monday morning, 302 persons had died on state roads so far in 1966. The state national guard division is extremely safety conscious. it achieved a spotless record over the Memorial Day weekend by moving 8,000 men to Fort Chaffee, Ark., in 1,400 vehicles without a single scratch."

The inferno was brought under control shortly before noon but continued to burn until nearly 4 p.m. By Monday night all that remained of what had been a day-long battle were hundreds of smoldering tires. Firefighters were rotating watch-shifts by crews to keep an eye on the still smoking tires and were expected to remain at the scene most of Monday night......The fire erupted when two men working in the yard started a fire in an oil drum to keep warm. Officials said the men identified as Jose and Jose Trejo, both from Juarez, Mexico, were cutting up tires for shipment to Mex- (Photo tag: Clouds of black smoke from tire fire drift over city, looking east from the state capitol.)"
