Abstract: "Stainless steel-clad fuel sheet 0.020 in. thick with a 0.008-in. core of stainless steel plus UO2 was produced by roll cladding a powder metal compact. The effects of processing variables, core-matrix composition, quantity of oxide, and oxide particle size on the properties of the sheet were investigated. The strength and ductility of the core decreased sharply as the quantity of oxide in the core increased from 20 to 40 w/o. Over the range of matrix compositions investigated the particle size of the oxide had little affect on the core strength. In cores containing 21 w/o of oxide. 18 w/o chromium, 82 w/o iron matrix prepared from the elemental metal powders had the highest strength and ductility, but this matrix was susceptible to cracking during thermal cycling. As elemental 18 w/o chromium, 9 w/o nickel, 73 w/o iron matrix was the most satisfactory from the standpoint of fabrication and over-all characteristics of the resulting sheet."

From summary: "During 1951 NDA has, at the request of ORNL, been studying the supercritical-water reactor as proposed for aircraft propulsion in Wash-24...This study has concerned itself only with the reactor and shield." The report describes the reactor and the processes involved in developing it. The goal of the development of this reactor is identified as a path to supersonic flight.

Technical report covering classified work of the Critical Experiments Program in the Physics Division for the period December 20, 1950 to March 20, 1951. Report outlines investigations of properties of critical assemblies composed of uranium and various reflectors and moderators, preliminary measurements of the effective energy for fission in the assembly. Introduction: "Prior analyses of a plasma in a magnetic field have been limited, as far as the writer is aware, to cases in which the relative change in field over the orbital distance and the relative change in ion concentration are both small, or in which the relations have been viewed in a purely hydrodynamical way. The first approach excludes cases which can be of considerable interests, for it fails near a plasma edge. The second loses all sight of the structure imposed by the orbital motions."

Report discussing the details of a radiation burst in a spherical reactor using plutonium nitrate fuel that occurred on November 16, 1951 at Hanford Works.

Abstract. Wigner effects on aluminum, beryllium, and tuballoy have been studied by the electrical resistance method. Samples were exposed during an interval which would have produced an increase of approximately 22% in resistance of AGOT-K graphite. The resistance of tuballoy increased approximately 1%. It is shown that the increase can be accounted for by the amount of fission product impurity formed during the exposure. Neither aluminum nor beryllium showed any change. In the case of Be, the Wigner effect may be obscured, to some extent, by the approximately .2 - .3 atom % of impurity present in the samples. Based on the increase occurring in ADOT-K graphite, a change of approximately .2 - .5 x10-6 ohm-om might be expected in the case of Be. The accuracy of the method was sufficiently great to detect a change of this magnitude. Other experiments with Be will be undertaken when purer samples are available. Meanwhile, some samples of the present type ae being subjected to further irradiation.

Abstract. A satisfactory method has been found for dissolving thorium metal and thorium oxide in heat-treated 25-12 stainless steel vessels without excessive corrosion of the vessels. The dissolution medium consists of strong HNO3 containing a small amount of fluoride or fluo-silicate. the fluoride required has no harmful effects on a subsequent solvent-extraction step for a separation of uranium isotopes from the dissolved thorium.

Abstract. Measurements were made to determine the effect of thermal cycling on heat transfer from slug to jack using a slug with a sand blasted surface. The value of the transfer coefficient h decreased from initial values ranging from 10 to [formula], to values and [formula] after 1700 cycles, and to a range of 0.15 to 0.45 [formula] after 3200 cycles. Comparisons are made with the results found for slugs with different surfaces.

This report follows experiments on the acute effects of 200 kv X-ray treatments on chickens in a series of 200 animals exposed to doses of 2 r to 1200 r, with an additional 100 chickens.

Abstract: Cadmium ratios for very thin (neutron and beta-wise) foils of thorium, gold, vanadium and indium have been measured in the glory hole of the WBNS. These cadmium ratios, together with the known thermal cross sections and a given calculated resonance integral for gold, were used to evaluare the resonance integrals of thorium, vanadium, and indium.

Report discussing a study that investigates the use of small amounts of tracer elements placed in the fuel alloy of subassemblies in order to locate fuel-element failure. Details of experimental methods and materials are included as well as data that leads to the suggestion of further investigation.

Report describing a study regarding the solubility and related properties of tributyl phosphate (TBP), which has lower solubility in water than most uranium solvents. Pure TBP and TBP in an inert diluent were tested for solubility in water, several nitric acid solutions of varying concentrations, and other solutions typical of process streams. For TBP-diluent-water system tests, equilibrium water content in organic phase was found.
